CPU / GPU Frametime Issues

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I suspect this is a complete noobs question, but in the Persian Gulf and Nevada, whenever I hit fly and press F2 to move to the cockpit, the CPU and GPU frametimes jump to more than 100 and then the GPU stays constantly in the red whilst the frame rates drop to 12-13 and the whole experience becomes quite awful.

I've got a pretty well spec'd machine and the temps of the CPU and GPU temps rarely, if ever, go above 80 degrees.

I don't know how to take in cockpit video so I can't really share what I'm seeing here.

Any help would be gratefully appreciated.

Since you fly in VR you might have overdone the graphics settings. Yes, no current PC can hold very high fps in VR in DCS when set to highest graphics settings. Start with disabling SSAA and MSAA then check again.

F1 is cockpit - default view for starting the mission. F2 is view of aircraft from outside.

No problems in Caucasus?

Hi Draconus

MSAA and SSAA are off. The problem doesn’t raise its head in Caucus. To really push it, I fly ultra low and fast over the forest areas in caucus and occasionally the FOS drops to around and the frame time raises to mid 20’s with red spikes being seen in the progress bar. But in the PG the frame time goes above 200.

TBH map efficiency for my Rift setup is as follows, single player with reasonable eyecandy.

NTTR best performance can get mostly 90FPS.

Caucasus same deal but don't hit 90FPS as much.

PG rarely see 90FPS mostly 45FPS but also see major slow downs.

Normandy Most times I get 45fps

of course this will vary with settings but above is with same settings so illustrative of how it works relative between maps.

Don't forget a laptop CPU and GPU rarely preform as well as desktop systems so your going to get some performance hits right there. The reason the temps are controlled is there simply isn't the thermal capacity in laptop hardware hence performance is throttled.

DCS needs clock cycles and GPU grunt and lots of it.

Control is an illusion which usually shatters at the least expected moment.

Gazelle Mini-gun version is endorphins with rotors. See above.

You should use MSI AFterburner's OSD with CPU speed and GPU speed shown, YOu might see a dip in MHz due to power limitations on said device.

Laptops dont perform good when the stress level stays high, they can boost for a few seconds and then the Bios throttles them down. That I think is the nature of the beast.

Graph it with the OSD with "text & graph" setting and you may see the reason ( I am sure that is it )

Fud, I've a friend with the exact same laptop and a simular problem (lower frame rates then expected etc) the issue was that windows 10 was defaulting DCS to use the onboard video card (the integrated intel one) over the RTX 2080. That may be your issue.

You can either check bios and see if there's an option there or I believe in both the Nvidia control panel and in windows itself there's an option to force which GPU is used. But I would start there.

hI ROBGRAHAM... Im new to Windows.. so have no idea what that means sadly. I have noticed that the problem is in VR and not 2D...

Hi Draconus, thanks for the link. All that did was switch off the HMD so I’ve had to re-enable it. I do have DCS selected in the NVidia control panel, as per the second video. I’ll see if I can figure out how to add screenshots and I’ll send a pic taken through the lens of the HMD.

We really need to know what your graphics settings are in the game. There are many settings that can kill VR performance for even the highest end gaming machines. Have you tried the DCS VR pre set setting?
