We have the current three-day period. The Community is screaming for a month.

 

My vote would be for a two-week period. In this day and age with technology being what it is a two-week period is eminently reasonable in the circumstances.

I would not argue the point. Two weeks might be acceptable to many people. However, this discussion could have better served everyone had it happened before the new system was released into the wild.

Well, though I don't agree with the methodology it is done and I hope for a positive outcome for everyone.

Quite reasonable, IMHO. If my router goes south that gives me a reasonable amount of time to determine that the router is the source of the problem and procure a new one.

That's a really good point, if your router (only source of internet in many cases) goes bad and whatever shipping service that is carrying the replacement has trouble, I.E. you live in the mountains (like I do) and there is a mud slide that prevents any road traffic for an extended period (which happened to a town near me about a year ago)... Your basically screwed as far as DCS. Which bothers me and i am glad they are re-evaluating it, but still, for the people who live in places with less stable infrastructure it is concerning...

I agree in principle but you can only take this so far. There will always be exteme cases but (I hate myself for saying this) ED probably does needs to consider the statistical likelihood of certain extreme cases.

I wonder if my insurance company would consider access to ED servers to be a vital service. ;)

Well, I don't agree with the Management of the Vancouver Canucks everytime, and have lots of ideas on the subject, but at the end of the day I don't do anything more than backseat manage. ED tries to do what is best for DCS World, and the best for us as well...

Oh hell. Ice Hockey. That is a mysterious sport where nobody knows the rules and the best players try not to die while scoring a goal. :)

Collegiate hockey is much better, btw. Of course, I went to Michigan Tech in the late 70's when they were a major force in their division. Unfortunately, that did not last and they are now just a footnote.

I want to say thank you for this new copy protection, it's much user-friendly, I personnaly like it.

I also want to give a feedback because I'm also a little worried for the lifetime of the token, I've some friends in the army, they bring their laptop, a small joystick and play DCS offline for weeks/months

Is it ok to discuss DRM ..... and hockey teams in the thread or is that off topic?

It has been mentioned that even now, starforce requires you to reactivate after 30? days or such without internet connection. Is that really the case? If yes, some people should have run into that issue already although no one here has said so if i am not mistaken.

By the way; i have texted my brother to ask him (hes was a judge and prosecutor in Germany) what he thinks of ''requieres internet activation'' oder ''benötigt Internetaktivierung'', as it states on the german store front, and its retroactive change to a new system. My guess is that a german court (if it ever came to this) would side with the customer here. I think if the wording is somewhat unspecific it usually is interpreted in a 'common sense' notion.

Having caught up, I'm actually concerned that the discussion now seems to be leaning towards what time period is appropriate rather than the change itself.

Irrespective of the practicalities of how to do a "call home" to validate or ability to overcome everyones specific "once in a lifetime scenario" circumstances my main concern remains the same.

A change in terms and condtions of a sale - post contract.

I'm not an "expert" in Consumer Law and even if technically it was lawful to introduce this change in some countries, to my mind its at least morally wrong.

All that said and for what its worth, I'd live with something like 2 weeks if that was decided. Not sure anything less wouldnt almost certainly impact me adversely.

I think one solution is that ED add a new tab in the personal section of the web. If you dont have internet connection but a mobile, just enter the web, log in on your personal section then Authorization tab.

Here the user must fill things like user, password and any other ID or info needed and clic send. That way ED can check the info and Authorization granted for DCS even without internet connection. For example sending at the user a code to enter in DCS. When you execute DCS the Game tries to login, if not it request an offline code for authorization. Just copy paste the one sended when you enter ED web Page with the mobile and play.

So two ways. Playing DCS with internet connection or sending Authorization info on the personal section in the web page.

The offline temporal verification Code would be a nice solución.

And extending the grace period. There days is not enough.

If there was a choice between starforce and the new "method" I would pick

I use DCS without internet A LOT!!! When i am working off home, I do scripts, plan missions and do some flights... now... it KILLLS ME.

Why don't we keep both systems. For those that want convenience, log in and no key is required as long as you phone home every x days. If you dont have a reliable internet connection or don't want to phone home then the offline mode requires a key with activation limits. Everyone is happy...

Because ED would then have to continue to pay for Starforce, even though they don't need it. Then there is also the headache of maintaining two DRM systems.
