Perhaps in the days before radar altimeters (or GPS) some airlines used it, but in the 50 years I've been flying in the US (civil and military, and overseas) I've NEVER had to use QFE. But regarding USAF, while I have to believe your words obviously I know indeed they uses QFE as I also know military ATCs where USAF operates, they usually request for QFE and are quite upset when here in Spain we only have QNH available. However, there's no point in who uses what where, whether you use QNH or QFE the important thing is you know what they are and how to use them. S!
