Laptop vr

Recommended Posts

Hi guys, I need a notebook due to the work and I was thinking to buy a notebook that could support also vr with dcs.

So, I have seen this hp omen 15 with that specification :

Intel® Core™ I7-8750H (2,2 GHz - 9 MB L3) > 4.1 Intel turbo bost

HDD: 1000 GB - SSD: 512 GB - RAM: 32 GB

Display: 15,6'' WLED Full HD - WiFi IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n/ac

Bluetooth 5.0 - Windows 10 Home 64

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070, 8 GB

Do you think it could be good?

my doubts were only for the cpu, but with the turbo it arrives at 4.1 ghz

Thanks

(I know laptop isn't the best for simulation , but for now i could use only it)

My range is about 2000 euro max, in fact this omen 15 on sale costs 1770 euro, but the original price is 2400 euro.

About the razer I did not know it

It may fight into the 2K Euro mark.

It will run the lower end headsets in DCS this year. I used to run a cv1 with my old laptop, i doubt i could run a reverb with yours.

New hotness: I7 9700k 4.8ghz, 32gb ddr4, 2080ti, :joystick: TM Warthog. TrackIR, HP Reverb (formermly CV1)

Old-N-busted: i7 4720HQ ~3.5GHZ, +32GB DDR3 + Nvidia GTX980m (4GB VRAM) :joystick: TM Warthog. TrackIR, Rift CV1 (yes really).

I have an asus rog G701 that runs at 45 FPS at 1.4 PD with an OG odyssey. Got it refurbished on amazon for about 2k US. Should be cheaper now... it’s been a while since I bought it. Specs in sig :D

Edit: That’s with MSAA x2

Your Asus is interesting, and I saw that the cpu base is of 2.9 ght to 3.9 Ghz with turbo.

My doubts were only for the cpu, if with the turbo to 4.1 ghz could I have some problems or if however could work good also with vr, also because I think that the 2070 vga is good.

So, maybe I will see better in this day the best solution ;)

The big ? is, how long will it Turbo before heat forces it to downclock every now and then. One thing is almost sure, it won’t run at full Turbo forever.

In addition, the GPU adds a lot of Heat too, so make your assumptions how long it takes to have it heatloaded. That is the real performance peak.

Testing it would be great before buying if you don’t want unpleasant surprises.

It runs around 4.5Ghz when playing dcs. Idk if it supposed to run that high but it does. I’ve not overclocked it. No cooling problems either but the fans are loud!! But I removed the headphones from my odyssey and use my own anyway so I don’t hear them :) I’d love to build another rig instead of a laptop but I live on a sailboat and a tower would just take up too much room. I’m pretty happy with my setup though... and I can carry it anywhere in a backpack.

Yup this was the major issue with my old 4790k. Eventually it would overheat on dcs. It also has absurd cooling for a laptop, but eventually heat would win, iirc 30 min or so os what it took.

I have a Dell I5 7577 gaming laptop that doing great in vr.

Processor i5-7300HQ @2.5ghz, 2496mhz 4 cores

GPU Gtx1060 6g max-Q

Ram 16g

Storage: All two are SSDs

VR headset: Samsung Odyssey plus

I am amazed how this laptop is doing with the O+. I do not get the 45fps that is generally expected but dcs is interestingly playable and enjoyable with the 22 - 35 fps I get. Somethings I get low like 19fps and the system does not quit. I have never had a shutdown from using it with VR.

I put off VR for a long time because I had this notion my laptop specs could never run vr in dcs but I was wrong. It has been smooth and a little of glitches. However I am single-player most times. At that, the rig does well is certain single-player campaign loaded with aircraft at the airbase.

Texture high

Terrain texture high

Water medium

MSAA 2x

Shadow low

Cockpit readability in all the modules I have is just amazing. I see the speed and altitude gauges in the F-14(a module I struggled with cockpit readability) a whole lot better in vr than in 2d screen. I would have to zoom in to see where the handles are in gauges on a laptop screen for the Tomcat. Crystal clear in VR.

Point is that some of this new laptops could pull surprises. The Reverb headset, I do not have so not sure about that, but the O+ have been doing very well on my rig.

I have been fortunate in having a good time so far and I hope it remain so because I have been so spoiler by vr now. A revert to flat screen would be tough.

Over time the heat kills your Caps and all those nice little devices on the PCB.

There are some that may cool better and need longer to be heat loaded, eventually they will all struggle and cook the interior. Been there with 3 devices, 2 were explicitly gamer laptops, Asus & Dell/Alienware. Not again for me.

So, I see that there are a lot of different opinions about ahaha, becouse i understand that the main problem is the cpu and the heat, that could shout down the laptop.

Instead what do you think about a mini pc gaming like this, could it support vr and the Sim in a good way?

much better idea, couple it it with a 240er AIO and its way better than a laptop

tho I would choose other components, but the small box idea will carry you further than any laptop ever can

ITX-Ryzen board

2x16GB RAM

Ryzen 6 core chip

GPU that fits your wallet

a nice case

a 240er AIO

1x NVMe 500GB, better 1TB

good PSU

DONE

*if you are a Road Warrior in Hotels, dont carry the screen, they have modern TV's..just use those and your VR

Yeah, the only reason I was using a laptop in the first place was due to space restrictions and the fact I was traveling alot.

I considered an ITX form factor for a replacment as space is at a premium for me, but decided that it had too many drawbacks compared to a regular desktop case (not being able to fit certain GFX cards, harder to cool etc) and I just found/made the space.

Biggest problem with the really high end laptops is the GPU is often soldered into the heat sink as is the CPU slot. Heat management as we know is the issue. I have a Scan.co.uk made 3XS 17.3 Carbon extreme laptop. 4K screen to output to large 4K monitors, 8700 CPU and 1080 GPU. Love it and outstanding gaming rig, but the power block is the size of a real house brick and the machine weighs 4.5kg!!!

Worst bit is to upgrade to 2080 GPU means replacing the chassis as it’s hard wired in. Still considering it as I can swap everything else over and sell it on. I didn’t know this when I bought it soca little annoyed! Amazing with the Rift S though.

Clevo P775TM1-G laptop with 9900K and RTX2080. Airliner pilot by day and keen simmer on days off.

Mark.

Hi Maverick

Not sure if I'm too late but I had the same thoughts as you and ended up with a Mini ITX case from Lian Li pc-q38/ and had a few "issues" to think about but at the end it turned out to be working very well.

Just space is very limited and I had some issues with the GPU (only 2 slots high possible) and although it told me that a 240 AiO fits without problem that does just apply to some specific models as height (radiator together with the fans) was an issue again.

After starting with pure air cooling one year later I installed a water cooling to OC the CPU to 4.9GHz.

Modules and maps: all of them

Specs: ASUS ROG STRIX Z370-I, Intel i7-8086K@4.9GHz, 32GB Corsair Vengance RAM, Nvidia RTX 2080 FE, 2x1 TB Samsung EVO 970 M.2, WIN10 64bit, HP Reverb
