AJS-37 Development Update

Dear All,

Over the past few weeks, we’ve been focusing on some key in-depth improvements to the Viggen which are not readily apparent.

Much focus has been spent on the rewriting of certain systems and the cleanup of memory states. These will help improve overall module stability as well as allow us to properly reset the aircraft to it’s default states on respawn, repair and rearms. One of the unfortunate side-effects of this development was that we introduced a crashing issue with certain subsystems on aircraft respawn or reset. We’ve worked diligently to fix these as quick as possible, but to our great dismay you will have experienced them for the past couple of weeks. A patch should launch next wednesday with these fixes implemented. We’re sincerely sorry for introducing this issue!

We’ve also spent considerable time and focus on rewriting and improving our sidewinder seeker code, in conjunction with making the swedish sidewinder variants appropriately effective. You should see significant improvements across the entire gamut of this weapon subsystem, and less annoying edge-cases where you are unable to distribute MiG parts when in prime position to do so.

An item that has been backlogged due to mission work and is now close to being complete is the finalization of the flight manual. While we’re still improving one section of this document, and there are still some improvements to be made, we’re happy to be able to share with you our current release candidate of this document. Grab it and enjoy! Feedback is welcome as always.

We’re speeding fast towards fall, and our goal is and will remain to make sure the Viggen is complete and out of early access this year.

That means feature complete, stable and held in high regard by all. Thanks for your patience on this journey and we hope you’ll continue to have faith in us as we move towards the completion of the Viggen, Tomcat and all of the exciting things beyond.

Sincerely,

HB Viggen Team

Dear All,

Over the past few months we've been fairly silent due to the ongoing pre-release crunch on the F-14. During this time however, the Viggen team has continued to improve the aircraft as we head towards release status and total feature completion.

We still expect this to happen this year, and do not foresee any changes in this schedule.

Over the next several patches we will be introducing some of the final "major" items remaining: e.g.: the Ram Air Turbine, in-cockpit pilot, PBR overhaul of both cockpit and exterior, new custom soundset, new missions and campaigns, performance improvements, and plenty more. Once the F-14 launches, we'll also be working on backporting several new, exciting features that we've built for the F-14. We're excited to reveal these together with the F-14 - and we feel that they will bring the Viggen to another level.

For now, however, the next beta branch patch will launch a number of new, work in progress features and bugfixes:

Changes for next patch

  • Fixes to generated data cartridge, including: only planning for non-infantry units and fixes to broken SKU-planning.

  • New!
Flight planner now also uses terrain to plan for least exposed approach to target while still allowing for pop-up maneuvers.

  • New WiP Feature!
generated data cartridges after ELINT has been collected. Is selectable in kneeboard and will generate a flight plan with a search pattern for the radar transmitter. You can select a stand-off range or to overfly the area.

  • Sidewinder fix: T1 to Radar-lock instead of TV, and the missile is now not re-caged when setting safety armed.

  • Fix to the HUD presenting wind compensation incorrectly when in a bank.

  • New
    !
Callsigns (including your own) are now displayed in the kneeboard.

  • RPM in outside view adjusted to say 100% when at max RPM instead of 97%.

  • Corrected AI Afterburner sounds.

  • Fixed flight-envelope values for AI.

  • Introduced a weight on wheels workaround to fix thrust reverser issues.

  • Corrected ability to re-fix MÅL-points.

Changes for patch after next

For the subsequent major patch, we will be introducing a significant number of art changes! Chief among them:

New: New and Improved Afterburner Effects

We've done a stop-gap pass (until F-14 developments are backported) on our afterburner effects for the Viggen!

These now look far more realistic, are appropriately scaled and bright. The afterburner will now also cast light inside the exhaust as well as on surrounding objects and terrain.

New: RAT (Ram Air Turbine)

This little spinny boi can help keep you alive in a pinch! This has actually been active in our simulation since launch, but we've been lagging behind on implementing the visuals.

Cute, isn't it?

New: Original, 32bpp uncompressed normalmaps!

We felt that VRAM was at a great premium on the launch of our Viggen. Lately, however, we've reevaluated VRAM usage of the Viggen and the impact on performance.

This has allowed us to now ship uncompressed, high quality normalmaps for the exterior.

This change has also been necessary due to the discontinuing of support for swizzled XY BC5 normalmaps in the core engine.

Enjoy those sculpted rivets in all of their glory!

Other Changes

The current, non-exhaustive (this will grow) list of changes due for that patch is as follows;

  • Exterior mirrors now reflect the environment

  • Fixed various clipping and shine-through issues in exterior (esp. Cockpit)

  • Sculpted new normalmap for exhaust nozzle and area

  • Sculpted new normalmap for exterior exhaust shell

  • Added RoughMet textures for the exhaust shell

  • Added turbine texture for better deep engine detail

  • Metal elements on wings now have appropriate material definitions

  • Animated engine exhaust fan

  • New!
Significantly improved visual fidelity of afterburner

  • Afterburner now cast lights inside engine exhaust pipe

  • Afterburner now cast lights on surrounding objects and terrain

  • Corrected afterburner z-fighting

  • Afterburner planes do not render at high viewing angles.

  • Corrected afterburner self-illumination

  • Fixed glass in LoD (distant) models turning opaque and bright.

  • New!
Added significantly better quality uncompressed normal maps for entire exterior

  • Light domes are now appropriately shiny

  • Fixed wheel/tire animation values so they spin at correct speeds.

Latest Changes

And in case you missed it; the latest patchnotes for the Viggen were as follows:

  • SPA-mode: Fix of adding more than 9 MALs should reset count + manually entered MALs shouldn’t be overwritten.

  • SPA-mode: Info about fix (target heading and speed) wasnt displayed after a SKU-fix was taken and then it was also immediately overwritten in AKTPOS.

  • Other various fixes to SPA-mode

  • Bombing: Added bomb-rate "catch-up" on first bomb impulses: improves bombing accuracy

  • Bombing: DYK/dive bombing mode changed so release is begun at later time making the sight more centered in view and easier to use

  • Custom cartridges: Automatically generated mission plans improved with additional info in kneeboard

  • Custom cartridges: ability to automatically generate mission for MÅL and SKU targets by landing and setting master mode BER.

  • Custom cartridges: for dynamically generated cartridges the time-on-target can be changed with key command.

  • Other custom cartridge fixes

  • Added Quick Missions for Persian Gulf Map.

  • Changes to AI RB-04E definitions. AI now fire RB-04 and break away.

  • Updated RB04 / RB15 Warhead

  • Tweaked RB04E motor burntime.

As always, thanks for your support. We'll be working very hard and diligently to meet our goals for the Viggen and it's full completion by the end of 2018.

Sincerely,

The Heatblur Viggen team

200m butterflier inside :harhar:

Dear All,

The Viggen goodness continues! Thank you all for your support and encouraging words.

Every time we see a positive post about the Viggen or someone recommending it, it makes it all worthwhile.

Lets jump straight into two big new Viggen changes and features;

radar2.gif

> Introducing Heatblur Ground Radar 2.0!

We’ve been working on a large overhaul and improvement pass of our ground radar technology!

Since the release of the AJS 37- much has changed in DCS World, in particular in the realm of ground rendering and map technology.

This has had unwanted effects on our ground radar - but beyond that, we also saw significant opportunities in improving the detail and performance of the sensor and correct some core deficiencies that have been around since release.

On a tangential note and au contraire to some rumours out there: our ground radar is a true, raycasted realistic implementation of the PS-37 radar.

We use asynchronous computing (multithreading) to achieve excellent performance and realistic levels of radar detail.

The level of complexity of this core in-house feature is very high- but we consider it a foundational feature in the Viggen and many of our aircraft moving forwards, including the F-14 - which includes some ground mapping functionality in the Pulse radar modes.

The initial results of our improvements are now close to complete, and we’re pleased with what we’ve been able to once again achieve. Not only for the Viggen, but for future modules and products. In the Viggen in particular, you will now be able to enjoy a much more detailed image and in general a much more useful one - especially as you’ll be able to identify key tactical or navigational elements with ease.

This now also includes buildings, runways, bridges and other objects that have until now been completely missing.

Our main goals with the Heatblur ground radar 2.0 were to:

  • Enhance detail and performance of the dedicated raycaster.

Our new and improved raycaster model yields improved detail and accuracy of the radar image.

The detail captured is now much finer and better accounts for terrain elements, ground types and other factors.

  • Make buildings, cities, objects, bridges and other terrain structures/features reflect the radar and be visible.

You will now be able to see buildings, cities, towns and much more on the radar!

Perhaps more importantly for a dedicated strike aircraft; you will be able to see bridges and other key tactical map features such as hangars.

This can also be super useful for navigational fixes.

  • Make civilian traffic visible.

Trains, static ships, parked aircraft etc. - will now be visible on the radar.

Some of these objects are highly reflective owing to their large RCS and materials.

radar2_thumb.jpgradar1_thumb.jpg

  • Sub-grid terrain type raycasting to accurately depict Runways and other smaller terrain features.

We’ve enhanced our raycaster with subdivided grid based raycasting for areas that are not correctly interpolated due to their small relative size.

You are now able to accurately detect runways and other small terrain features!

Load up on those BK90s and get to work.

  • New terrain reflectance model and values for terrain types.

We’ve overhauled our ground reflectance model and associated terrain type reflectance values. Different terrain types will now reflect radar energy more accurately:

  • New slope reflectivity model.

The slope and angle of the terrain will now accurately impact the reflectivity strength of the radar energy.

You will now be able to more easily tell the difference between steep and mild slopes through their respective radar return strengths.

Radar energy now also more realistically falls off with distance and increase in incidence angles.

  • Enhance accuracy of the raycaster & interpolator, especially at long distance.

We’ve improved our interpolator and corrected some core flaws which will now make the ground radar much more accurate and reliable, especially at long distances.

You can now more easily plan out your approach using the ground mapping radar from altitude.

radar3_thumb.jpg

We’re looking forward to launching this new version of our ground mapping radar into the Viggen next month!

Feedback is welcome as always once you get a hands-on! :)

>Multiplayer Flightplan & Strike Planning

Another important new feature that we’ve just added in the latest patch(that has flown under the Radar somewhat) is the ability to load waypoints into your data cartridge more easily in Multiplayer by using the F10 map and user marks system.

This way you can quickly load waypoints into your flight computer, or even auto-generate a flightplan based on a single attack waypoint automatically.

Thanks a ton to Badjoe117 for making this video and explaining how it works!

Check it out below and let us know what you think.

This feature is now available in Open Beta.

For those of you who have missed it, here was the entire latest AJS37 Changelog. Note that some of these changes are not in the live build, and will be available on the next Open Beta patch.

DCS AJS37 Viggen by Heatblur Simulations

  • E on waypoint indicator should not show when aiming ie sidewinder lock.

  • EP13 altitude warning is reset if EP13 is not turned on.

  • The Boundary/GRÄNS lines are now visible again.

  • AB performance at height and speed tweaked.

  • The dumping of the sight for sidewinder carried on wingtips should now be relative to the plane and not the horizon.

Stay tuned for more awesome Viggen stuff coming up!

Sincerely,

The Heatblur team
