[REPORTED] INLET ICE Warning message

Can someone from ED please confirm they're looking into this at least?

 

I've added the chart one last time so everyone can see the icing conditions that should trigger the inlet ice warning. It's all rather self explanatory.

 

INLET TEMP is available on the DDI engine display and Mach is on the HUD. It's easy to see that it's currently triggering outside of these parameters.

I keep thinking about this graph specially the top left note which is saying

 

"Too Cold (Ambient Temp below - 30C)"

 

Does it mean that icing conditions and danger zone is expected only if the Ambient Temp is at or below -30C?

No, at or ABOVE -30C. At lower than -30C the water particles in the atmosphere are already ice crystals and do not adhere to the inlet surfaces. It states this elsewhere in the NATOPS.

OK. After doing some research and studies, I came across some valuable information I would like to share them with you.

 

As you know we discussed the ICE INLET Warning in depth. But, since most of us are not expert in the F-18 systems, some of us were expressing their thought and opinions that could be right or wrong (including my self). So I gathered some information and studied them to leave no doubt on how the system is working.

 

The Inlet Ice detector is located in the left engine inlet (intake) only (As per manual and photos), and preceding the engine Fan Inlet lip a few centimeters (2 o'clock). The Inlet Ice detector is not part of the engine (unlike the Fan Inlet Temp sensor), and is not used in the Engine Operation.

The Ice Detector system is designed to detect and report ice accretion at the engine inlet using a “heat of fusion” principle. The system checks for ice accretion at very short intervals. After two consecutive ice detections, the electronic controller will report this to the cockpit operator, and concurrently, turn on the heater to de-ice the sensor. Within seconds of deicing the sensor, the process of ice detection resumes.

 

 

The above quote is from the Ice detector manufacturer. and it is explaining the detector operation for a late F/A-18E/F variants. But, the same concept is used for ice detector in the F/A-18AD, and also they were the supplier.

The Fan Inlet Temp (T1) is located at the Fan Inlet (4 o'clock angle) and it is a part of engine Fan Module (Installed by GE). But, it is used only as monitoring sensor, unlike the Compressor Inlet Temp Sensor (T2.5 CIT) which is used for Fuel Control System. Its worth to mention, Temp Sensors are called Transmitters and not sensor in the manuals.

 

The Engine Anti Ice Switch when ON, Hot Air from (Stage 4) Goes inside the front Fan Inlet frame (No. 19) to provide Anti Icing for the Fan Inlet. But does not affect the Fan Inlet Temp sensor or the Inlet Ice Detector. Which means as long as icing conditions are present, the INLET ICE caution shall remain ON.

On the other hand, from how the Ice Detector works as described earlier. INLET ICE may switch OFF (When Ice Detector prob heating is on) at the beginning of next Ice Accretion Detection Cycle (No Ice). and switch back ON when Ice accumulated again.

 

DCS has modeled or scripted the Ice detector operation (Cycling) correctly. But to trigger INLET ICE caution whenever the OAT temp is below Zero is completely wrong. As icing conditions may not be present.

 

Another fact. The F/A-18 has an Air Data Computer. and several sensors on the front fuselage. But some of the Air or Ambient properties are calculated by the Air Data Computer as the following diagram (Even Humidity). But I don't know if there is a page on the DDI to show these values.

Very nice. I believe you are correct, and further proves the ice accretion simulation needs tweaking. Again, an aircraft can not accumulate ice in clear air. The aircraft systems are correct, but the wx simulation isn’t spot on. FL200 clear of clouds, visibility of 30+ miles, regardless of airspeed and OAT should not yield an ICE warning.

There is an incredible wealth of information here but are we any closer to determining if this is a bug or not? I have not seen an ED response in the 18 pages in this thread.

 

I am consistently getting the INLET ICE warning every time I fly and I am using the default summer/clear sky/no wind theme.

 

I am also consistently getting a TK PRES LO warning every time I fly as well. I noticed both these warnings first appearing after the July 6 update to 2.5 Open Beta. Maybe these are connected somehow...

I believe the TK PRES LO warning shows up when your centerline tank is empty. I could be wrong tho..

There is an incredible wealth of information here but are we any closer to determining if this is a bug or not? I have not seen an ED response in the 18 pages in this thread.

Me too I have also reported another bug, but it seems that the ED doesn't pay much attention to this forum (that could be normal because they are making an effort to finish the product - but this means that this forum is unuseful and the bug reporting is not useful). This is not a negative judgment, but simply an observation of the facts. :smilewink:

It just tells ya, that your de-icing is on.

My 2 cents is to agree that the ice detector should not detect ice when inlet, or ram air temperature, or total air temperature is more than a few degrees above zero. Of course, this is a dynamic environment. Fighter maneuvers may contain significant changes in airspeed (RAM temperature effect on TAT) and altitude (lapse rate effect on OAT) that occur rapidly, which means transitioning in and out of icing conditions quickly.

 

I think the problem with the ice problem may be with DCS in general and not the module? Basing structural and inlet icing on OAT alone might be a reasonable assumption for the Huey, but it's not for any of the turbojets. Also, unlike carburetor icing, I am not aware of any evidence of ice accretion in jets in flight absent of visible moisture. It is normal to get frost on skin of the airplane after landing when the cold fuel in the tanks cool the skin to below freezing in warm humid air, but this is not what we are dealing with here. It's very feasible to have OAT below freezing and TAT above. In these conditions the ice detector should not be having water freeze and adhere to it thereby causing a caution message, so there shouldn't be any indication.

 

Upon receiving this indication, the pilot should comply with the procedural actions and restrictions.

 

Therefore, it follows that the ice detection and inlet ice systems should be removed from the F/A-18 sim until icing can be modeled correctly in DCS world.

I agree. That was my 2 cents before. I’ve never seen a jet accrue ice without visible moisture, meaning clouds, fog, rain, snow, ice itself, etc.

 

The function of the jet may be simulated correctly, but the environment isn’t. However, I haven’t seen or heard of a DCS Hornet crashing because of ice ingestion. I just turn on the heat so that I don’t get bothered with erroneous alerts.

INLET ICE Warning message

 

Turning on heat shouldn't make the message go away.

 

 

 

It does after a while. At least for the Inlet ice. If it comes on, I just leave the heat on. Only because it’s not realistic to the environment conditions at all. It just hurts the immersion some.

 

I hate getting bugged about ice that isn’t even really present. There is no performance impact. Pointless.
