Is the ME abandoned?

Hey there, hope your all good.

I've been checking this.. "Official Updates » DCS World 2.5 Changelog and Updates of Open Beta" quite frequently lately and in the last few weeks and someone correct me if I'm wrong but it seems ED has left the ME in the wilderness or the too hard basket. The ME seriously needs looking at as many facets of it just don't work correctly, whether it be JTAC pluking up or AI units not behaving as they should and many other issues relating to. It's like things have been busted in there for years now and no one seems to care. And at the risk of this post getting deleted or moved I just felt I had to speak up.

All I really wish is that ED give the ME some love.

If you remember, ED put up a thread a little while ago asking for our opinions for how to improve the ME. That suggests to me that an update will be very much in the pipeline.

Hi,

Lots of work has gone in to the mission editor over the years and features have been added, fixes implemented.

If you have a particular problem please report it, we can check for the issue and if need be report it.

As mentioned we recently asked for improvement opinion, and we are looking to improve it in the future.

So the answer to your question is no, it is not abandoned.

thanks

Uhm, these are all fixes/changes to the ME from just a single update recently:

  • ME. Corrected some tabs that was not disappearing after unit removing.
  • ME. Fixed error when you сlick on task WW2: Big Formation (or Escort) in some cases.
  • AI Aircraft. Aerobatic task will work even on the end waypoint.
  • ME. Incorrect waypoint switch in the Switch Waypoint task fixed.
  • AI ships. Ship smoke will not be visible before ship activation.
  • ME. Payloads. When editing someone else's mission, the request to save the payload will be only once (not infinite).
  • MP. Triggers. MP client will not ignore the time set for messages by mission design.
  • ME. GUI Error when click on airplane group after type change fixed.
  • GUI Error when use Template with disabled module fixed.
  • ME. GUI Error when you try to open task Embarking - fixed.
  • ME. Custom payload is not saved for next session - fixed.
  • ME. GUI Error when click on task Embarking after use Static template - fixed.
  • ME. Bullseye coordinates reversed - fixed.

How can you say the ME has been abondonded while we get such updates?!

Ok, I merely asked the question as many errors are still currently evident and are those examples all in one update or over a period of time?

Ok, sorry just saw that "single" you mention. Alright point taken, hey just a frustrated mission builder here man.

Fair enough and I agree that there is still a lot of room for improvement in the ME. I just wanted to point out that ED is actually working on that. :)

It's also worth mentioning that that update list is a quirky rarity — you'll often come across mission editor updates and changes that have not been mentioned in any patch notes, and new functionality being added without a word (and, more annoyingly, without any documentation).

So a fair amount of development happens. ED just seem curiously wary of actually giving that development the time in the limelight it deserves. I've said it in other threads, but it bears repeating: the tool set is what makes everything else possible, yet it is gets no love in the company communication even though it could easily be a far more welcome, higher-profile starring, and more buzz-generating topic to show off than many plane updates.

No I agree with you and I shouldn't get so frustrated by it. And it was kind of a superfluous post from me, I shouldn't have bothered. It's just sometimes when I'm working on a mission and something goes all weird I'm left thinking is this my fault or the ME you know? You see, to me this is one of the best things about DCS, able to create like this and I'm only an average mission builder really anyway. Hey it's cool, I'll roll with it and I'm happy overall and appreciate the fact we have this awesome tool. Me won't moan about it again.

The AI behaviour has nothing to do with the ME.

That's not really true. There's a lot of interaction between the AI and the way flights are programmed in the ME. Ever try having an AI SEAD flight attack a SAM site without tweaking its "reaction to threat" and "allow jettison" parameters? The way AI flights behave in game has a whole lot to do with the way they're programmed in the ME. Poor mission editing can make the AI look a whole lot dumber, while good mission editing can make them look ... well ... a little better.

Now, whether or not the current level of relationship between AI effectiveness and mission editing is desirable or not - that's a different question.

The mission designer should NOT be required to configure every unit from the scratch to do what they want.

Like example, when new unit is decided to be added the designer choose between Airplane, Helicopter, Ground Vehicle or static object.

Then in the sidepanel the designer selects the name, group, condition, country, task and then unit amount and only after that a type of unit and its skill level etc.

Some of those things are related to each others, like country decides that what types there are available, or what liveries for the type. But when a Russia and USA has like everything, it is just bad. Like all those should be based to realism so example USA doesn't get a L-39 or MiG's or Sukhois at all as long the mission is set on that year or before the year that those were exported to USA. And similar for Russia, no teen fighters etc.

And then it looks like that the "Task" is more about only for the weapons loadout. While it should really be more configuring the AI behavior.

Like if one selects as task to be "SEAD", then the unit should be prepared specifically for SEAD sorties. Not to be afraid about missiles, not to be flying high normally than lure engagements or find the radars etc. If the designer selects "Strike", then again the unit should be prepared for those sorties. All the waypoints etc are set by default for more proper values, like CAP is to set by default to fly at high altitude (10 000 meters), while strike for extremely low.

There would be AI parameters that are changed for each task profile, so you are just making mistake if you select wrong task for the unit, instead go again through all the possible settings for it and forget some of them.

I agree with most of your wishes ... except the above, as not every mission I want to edit has to be 100% realistic, I do want the ability to edit ficticious engagements :)

The mission designer should NOT be required to configure every unit from the scratch to do what they want.

This is the nature of the ME, in order to make it so power, we need to be able to control every last detail. If we have decisions made for us, we lose options.

Some of those things are related to each others, like country decides that what types there are available, or what liveries for the type. But when a Russia and USA has like everything, it is just bad.

This was a good change. It would terrible to forcibly limit a country's units to only those they operate. The US flies MiG's in the real world. Aircraft have defected to other sides in the real world. How would you simulate these situations if aircraft were locked to one side?

Not to mention hypothetical situations are fine for a sim.

As an option this restriction can work. It definitely shouldn't be forced on us though.

And then it looks like that the "Task" is more about only for the weapons loadout. While it should really be more configuring the AI behavior.

Like if one selects as task to be "SEAD", then the unit should be prepared specifically for SEAD sorties. How would the AI be prepared for say, SEAD, specifically? Are they interested in SA-10's for your mission? Or only SA-15's? Do you want them to only make a brief pass over a SEAD site, or orbit near it to continually suppress it? What other threats will they encounter on the route? There is no simple SEAD template. It also doesn't take long to set options for every flight. RoE, Reaction to Threat, Jettison, etc only take a few clicks and the settings can be copied and pasted. I suppose ED could revise the standard tasks for units, but we'll probably never have something that covers all situations without tweaking.
