GTX 1080Ti but not a great fps improvement

Recommended Posts

Hi all, so I installed my new GTX 1080Ti and have been testing in dcs. There has been an improvement fps wise compared to my old card, a GTX 970. However, I'm only really averaging about 50-60 fps and when I got into the spirit cockpit, fps dropped to 14.

All my settings at pretty much on max.

My setup is as follows.....

i7 4790k @ 4.0ghz

Asus z97 pro

16 gbs corsair vengeance 2400mhz

GTX 1080Ti

Dcs installed on Samsung 850evo

Surely I should be seeing much higher fps??

That was in 1.5. It's running at 1920x1080 on a 60hz Sony tv with vsync off. I'll check which drivers are installed but I know when I booted up with the new gpu 1st time it installed new drivers automatically.

Any drivers installed automatically were installed by Windows. Get the latest drivers from Nvidia instead.

It is a good idea to use some kind of sweeper software to get rid of old driver files. It is done from the Safe Mode to get them all out. Something is not right.

I get near three digit performance in 1.5 and my system is four years old. Triple monitor too.

When you start the installation, in the installation options, select "Custom(Advanced)" and go on.

In the new window, under the list of installation components, check "Perform a clean installation"

Have a look at this thread and my comments in Message 22:

https://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=186370

I have just personally done all of what is listed in my message and my frame rates have never been better, with zero stutter.

Your mileage may vary.

So I just used ddu (display driver uninstall) and now reinstalling new dru. Can someone recommends what is the best driver for the 1080ti. Ie if there is a more stable version than the lastest?

Are you still on Win 7 or have you updated to Win10?

In case of Win10 Creator Edition, you can't choose: only the 381.78HF is suitable

Is doing it your way a different cleaning method than using express? The Express way goes through a cleaning process.

I see you just install the driver. Is that all I need to install? I get a long list of Nvidia programs. Are they bogging down my install?

Express option doesn't clean the registry, only uninstall the driver and install new one in the system.

With custom, every nvidia registy entry will be cleaned.

Usually, I install only what I need, call it minimal installation:

-Graphic Driver

-Physx

If you run videocard with HDMI you should update the Nvidia HD Audio too (usually Windows 7/10 installation have the Microsoft driver for it)

If you run 3D, you should install/update che 3D Vision Driver.

I never installed Nvidia game experience / nvidia update.

So after running some tests. My fps vary between 15 and 60 even after lowering some settings. Can anyone think of any reason for the poor performance?

DCS is very badly coded and not up to use the rendering power of a 1080ti.

Even with a 1080 1.5 is struggeling to even constantly use 50%.

2.0 is much better, try nevada, there you get what your GPU can render.

In 1.5 disable civilian traffic and reduce water and shadows, not because your gpu cant handle but because DCS cant handle your gpu. :D

Sad but true.

Ok, I'll give it a go and report back.

On a side note, if 2.0 is better at rendering as you say, I'm assuming when the new Caucasus map is released it'll be coded as 2.0 is now, thus being better than it's current incarnation?

Yes normandy should make use of the available rendering power, and the caucasus upgrade to 2.0 should do the same then. Basically 1.5 is limited by how old the graphics engine is.

Nahh, my GPU is at 90+% constantly..with very few exceptions when the scenery allows.

This used to be as you say but one of the patches must have fixed a lot, I now see at least my aging 980GTX being FULLY used, in 1.5 and 2.0.

**I would have to downclock to static 4GHz or so to see how much that effects GPU usage. I could imagine below a certain threshold this will happen to some good extent.

I think there is a certain amount of truth in what Microvax said about 2.0 handling my setup better. I'm getting far better fps in 2.0 than I am in 1.5 with exactly the same settings in both.

Your 4790 processor is under-running. Take a google search to find out how overclock your little beast. As far as I know it could work with no effort at 4.6GHz. It would help a lot your TI.

I've just an Amazon delivery of 2 200mm fans and a corsair H100i v2 which will be installed as soon as I get home from work. So I'll be overclocking later tonight. So will see what effects that has.

Do your self a favour before overclocking use something like acronis

to take a backup image of your system

That way if it goes badly wrong you can restore your OS without too much trouble

I use :

intel burn test 20 runs (will make your CPU get as hot as it ever will)

OCCT for 12 hours

memtest for about 12 hours

To make sure my system is stable (not OCed) , then overclock and do it all again to be sure

good luck

Still rockin Windows 7 64bit

+1

It is no bad idea to stresstest it before you oc.

YOu can, if you know how, just boot Mint Linux off a USB drive and install Google's stresstestapp ( also the name of it ). Run that in Mint and you wont break any drives or data on your install. YOu can do this w/o installing any Linux, jut boot from USB , go to Software Manager and search "stresstestapp", click&install it, open console and start it with:

stresstestapp -help

that will give you instructions how to use that tool, pretty straight forward.

If you dont know Linux that is maybe nothing to gets started with but maybe that triggers your interest in "other" systems..aka open your envelope wider

edit*: sardu from http://www.sarducd.it will make you a Mint stick with ease..or any other swiss army like USB tool, try it out, its worth it
