New RTX 2080, very poor performance

Recommended Posts

Have you checked in with your MB manufacturer if there’s an updated BIOS available? Some 2nd and 3rd gen mobos are not compatible with Pascal and above cards without a BIOS update. That would explain why the card is in safe mode.

I had to ditch my OEM HP mobo back when I had an i7-2600 and I had just bought my 1060-6GB because it would simply not boot. New mobo in, updated the BIOS and bam, worked like a charm.

Well, I think he said it worked perfectly fine in another computer. So I guess it's 50/50.

where did you read that?

from last OP statment Nvidia confirmed to RMA the card, if the gpu is stucked at 300mhz sureley is defective, there are hundreds of youtube in this regard.

UPDATE: Tested the card in another computer and there it works flawlessly. :(

Goa - He says it here, and if it works perfectly in another system it's highly unlikely to be the card at fault, but that's just my $.02... he does not say what the power unit is in the other system vs. his own though, and even the same power rated PS's of different makes are not equal! I would look to the MB or PS if it worked somewhere else..

Thanks everyone for input in this thread. I had the card exchanged to another one and the new card works properly.

Unclear exactly what was the issue. The first card didn't work in my computer, but worked in another computer. So then my friend offered to put his 2080 in my computer and that worked.

So one could say the card was faulty, as nVidia also concluded, as it SHOULD have worked in my computer too. But obviously somehow had issue with my specific configuration which I find weird.

So how much better is the new card compared to your old 980?

It gives me roughly 80-120 FPS on "normal unit density" missions, where my old 980 would give me 40-60 FPS, so it's a good ~100% increase in FPS.

In MP on larger missions with lots of clients and lots of AI units, like Red Snow or Hoggits GAW/PGAW it's less, around 60-80 FPS, due to my old Core i5 3570K CPU bottlenecking performance.

Worth mentioning is also that I now run the game with 4x MSAA and Terrain Object Shadows on, where I before ran it with 2x MSAA and Terrain Object Shadows was set to Flat.

What is the recommended PSU wattage for a RTX2080?

I think 600W is what's usually recommended (or minimum I don't remember). I've got a 700W.

If your computer's PSU can't deliver what your gfx card need, the computer will bluescreen or possibly insta-reboot. It won't manifest in FPS issues...
