For all those having problems in close, remember, that cone of light is getting smaller and smaller as you get closer. I "think" at 3/4" of a mile the cone for a centered ball is 16 feet high; just past the ramp, it is about 3 feet high. Something like that.

So, if you are a smidge shallow or steep, things go pear-shaped very quickly near the ramp.

At what speed / altitude is the marshal pattern normaly done?
Its not as easy as it sounds to fly a good circle with constant speed and altitude xD.
Especially when it should be exactley 5nm...

250kts I believe.

I also believe the marshal pattern is supposed to be within 5nm, rather than exactly. I don't think you've got to be quite that accurate, but I could be wrong

Makes alot of sense, anybody knows the exact rate of descent of the glidescope? Or do I need to RTFM?

It’s going to be somewhere around 700 fpm, but dependent on carrier speed, WOD and aircraft weight.

That's my understanding from the P-816 manual. It states "all aircraft must remain within 5 NM". Prepositions make a huge difference....but I'm just an English teacher.

Confusingly, some of the former Tomcat/Hornet drivers among the community seem to imply the pattern is at 5nm, so I don't know which it is. There could be a descriptive vs. prescriptive thing going on.

250kts seems quite slow, takes some time to go around one time...
Wouldn't be 350kts more logical as that is the speed where the case 1 pattern starts?

Why would you want to go around more often in the first place? Also 250 safes fuel while you are waiting. Dunno, but you probably have some freedom to adjust your speed to meet the charlie time when you are too far from the position where you leave the stack.

250kts is standard pattern speed everywhere IIRC.
