about 3rd party assets

Hello,

i was wondering if ED has a clear direction where they are heading with 3rd party AI assets for dcs world.

Razbam f.e. posted some WIP pictures of an Oerlikon Skyguard system as well as an Rapier Shorad, which make me wonder:

Since the Rapier already is in DCS, it's highly inefficient to add another model. And by inefficient i not only mean artists workhours, but also client file size and software maintainability (now you have two independent objects, that can each break on its own with no benefit of having them seperate).

I understand that there are different version of the Rapier system and Razbam are probably building an older version, but since they are nearly identical, it would be way better to built atop the existing model; maybe only changing texture (if that is even neccesary) and changing the config to represent performance of older versions.

The Oerlikon Skyguard on the other hand is not part of dcs yet, but it would be a highly desirable asset, since it was and is used extensively around the world and not only in the conflict Razbam are focusing on.

If Razbam now decides that they make the assets exclusive to their map or paywall them in another way, this unit would be paywalled forever, since it would not make any sense to built it again for free.

First of all i think asset packs are stupid in the first place and i hope, that we won't see paywalled AI assets apart from WWII, however if ED and partners decide that payed assets packs are cool then it would require careful thought, which assets are allowed to be part of a certain conflict/theme and which should be part of the general dcs world.

I don't want to start an arguemnt about asset packs: I think the communities thoughts about them are quite clear. i'm just wondering if ED has a master plan, how they want to handle 3rd aprty contributions in the future, or if anybody is just invited to add stuff of their own...

When compared to other flightsims (of the general aviation kind mostly), which rely on truly independent addon and mod makers, DCS has always been way more coherent and polished (from an art and design point of view): I'm a little bit afraid that this could stop being the case with so many contributors adding stuff. You can already see the effect with different art direction between the map modules: f.e. Normandy or Syria (judging by the early WIP pics).

Maybe i'm being pessimistic here, but it is still a reasonable concern (i think) and i would be interested to hear how ED are planning on going forward.

Thanks!

We don't have any info on how the assets will be handled at this time, its possible it will be like the WWII Assets, or they will come to a deal with ED to add to the core, but we just don't have info right now on this. Once we get closer, we can see how it will work.

Didn't the WW2 asset pack get rolled in with the normandy map at some point? I recall buying both seperately at one time.

And I agree, I think asset packs just divide up the community more, I think at a minimum a smart move would might be to tie them together with maps so at least there is some cohesion. But really just having them all in game in general would probably be the best solution, just not sure how folks would get paid in that way.

New hotness: I7 9700k 4.8ghz, 32gb ddr4, 2080ti, :joystick: TM Warthog. TrackIR, HP Reverb (formermly CV1)

Old-N-busted: i7 4720HQ ~3.5GHZ, +32GB DDR3 + Nvidia GTX980m (4GB VRAM) :joystick: TM Warthog. TrackIR, Rift CV1 (yes really).

ok. thanks for the reply!

i hope you figure out a good strategy, that makes sense for the platform.

Ps: i also hope ED and the 3rd parties can find a way to avoid paywalled asset packs for the reasons already discussed elsewhere...

I see. I think I bought each one separately. That makes sense.
