I think AMD has a problem

Recommended Posts

Here's the outcome of Der Bauer's survey ( in english ) about Ryzen 3000's Boost behavior:

in short: AMD has no solution, neither have the board vendors

There is also a version in german, which I watched btw.

It won't be long until we read "Class Action Lawsuit..."

AMD, you could have done better.

Somehow they always mess up the show with their own advertising strategy.

As Bauer says, there was no need to claim such unrealistic Boost Clocks, the CPU's are great the way they are and as such should have been advertised, what they ARE.

so what's the problem in a nutshell?

That at least ~50% of all Ryzen 3600 that contributed to the survey did not reach their max Turbo clocks, with a test that was orchestrated by AMD on how to do it.

With 3600X, 3700X, 3800X and 3900X things got way way worse.

95% of those 3900X did NOT reach the ADVERTISED speed in a test that AMD put out.

In very short, all those customers actually have a right to give them back or ask for a refund/compensation etc.. depending on your nation's laws.

Watch the video, it's basically the nutshell video.

According the the video, many 3000 series Ryzens aren't quite hitting their advertised boosts. Most only trail by 100MHz or less but it's still unfortunate optics for AMD, unless they can counter with how they got their results and it's legitimate. It's not really the crisis some would make it out to be, they are still great chips and great value, but AMD would have been better off avoiding this.

In a nut shell, is people being people, now a day. I got a 3600 and mine boost to 4192 on air using stock cooler without any issues. But people see it advertise to 4.2 boost and try to make something out of nothing.

To me is a great CPU, with very good price and this is just typical nonsense of now a day. Outrage people trying to find out what to be outrage about.

To whom it may concern,

I am an idiot, unfortunately for the world, I have a internet connection and a fondness for beer....apologies for that.

Thank you for you patience.

Many people don't want the truth, they want constant reassurance that whatever misconception/fallacies they believe in are true..

Nobody said those are bad CPU's.

It's just that you have to keep what you advertise in most countries and it is not always 8MHz or 25MHz, there are CPU's trailing 100-200MHz behind. If I had a 3800X and it would run 25MHz slower than my buddies 3700X I'd be mad at AMD for letting this happen. What sense does the 3800X make if a good portion of 3700X run faster ?

My 3900X has very good all core boost, I see 4.1-4.2 under small FFT stress testing and just about any other all core load I throw at it. This is well above the advertised 3.8ghz all core base clock.

However, single core, I get nowhere near the advertised 4.6ghz. With the latest BIOS I only get 4.2, and almost 4.4 if I use game mode (disable a CCX and go down to 6 cores).

There is hope though. I have been unable to run the older BIOS with AGESA 1.0.0.2 due to a POST problem with those BIOS, but it has better boost behaviour. This weekend I found a user modified BIOS that took the latest Asus BIOS but reverted it back to 1.0.0.2, and it works in my system. The end result is I now get 4.4 consistently single core, with both CCX enabled.

I still have hope that AGESA 1.0.0.4 will rectify the issues... some hope.

I just read about this. Will it be worth it to drop $500+ on the 3900x if its falsely advertised?

I would still buy one if my trusty 8700k died, no doubt.

It's basically this: Why did AMD claim Turbo Boost values above what they must have known will work in such a manner that it is understood by the consumer, reviewer, plain everybody.

The chip is so good that it would still sell great, which they really do, if the Turbo Clock was advertised 100 or even 200MHz lower.

Now AMD has a PR disaster. They must come forward and explain. If they dont, it will likely turn against them.

Again, those chips must be great and I would not hesitate to buy or recommend one for a new build.

Smells like a smear campaign to me.

AMD's new CPUs (and GPUs) are so popular they aren't able to keep up with the demand. The performance for the price is far ahead of Intel / Nvidia. Yes Nvidia and Intel are still faster, but you pay approximately 25-40% more for a ~5% performance increase, hardly worth it.

It would only make sense that some social media influencers are doing what they are paid to do - influencing. You basically can't trust what happens on social media. 1) they are trying their best to create controversy, because that's what gets the most views for them 2) they are paid to say certain things, which is why one day their sing praise about about Intel, and next day about AMD. It's essentially a product commercial.

Still, it'll be interesting how all this plays out.

No, I disagree.

H. Bauer has no interest in either Intel or AMD sales, it's just that he has access to hundreds of CPU at Caseking, has access to feedback from actual customers ( and their complaints ) and that together with his own findings led him to make this survey.

I agree that many times it is like you say, but Bauer doesnt need that kind of attention.

You should listen to what he says in the video I linked. I watched both, DE and EN version, I admit, in the german version he talks a bit more about circumstances but they roughly have the same coverage of what why when etc...

He's just honest, regardless. And that I like a lot.

Right now, AMD is out shipping Intel in CPUs and nVidia in GPUs at the same time, this has never happened before.

AMD Ryzen 3000s are outselling Intel in Kit/DiY Builder sales (Intel has small lead in Partner sales (Dell, HP etc), which is gonna change soon as well, as AMD Signed a revision contract with both Dell and HP.

The Boost problem on the 3000 Series is a small problem and only really affects people that benchmark, people that build to use it for work and games likely wont see any day to day problems.

AMD isnt going to say they have a fix before they do, they learned from FX Series, when they kept saying they had a fix in BIOS Updates or Windows Patches and it was never a fix.

Which lead to the AMD Core Count Class Action Law Suit.

The Result of that was a payout of $38 / Per Chip to Consumers, but not a cash payout, but in a internet security package. (yeah, I got 3 FX Chips still).

And TBH, I dont use the "Stage Boosts"

I have Profiles in Ryzen Master, The Default, Gaming, Media Processing and Power Conservation Modes.

Each Profile has their own Overclock (and underclock), and in the Case of Gaming (Mainly DCS), the SMT is Disabled / Enabled on each profile.

FWIW I just recently updated my 1700X bios and there was a 4.0GHz preset OC, so I tried it and it is stable, whereas I only figured out how to get 3.8ish on my own. AMD's bios does seem to have the habit of getting a little better with age, so even if they screwed up with false promises, with bios updates maybe those chips will reach their advertised speeds?

In case anyone is curious about the OC preset, I have an ASUS Hero VI.

Meh, always use AMD, always will.

Just upgraded this weekend to a Ryzen 7, did a mild TPU boost, and the RAM memory and CPU memory processor speeds are spot on.

CPU vs. Input Voltage timings and over-clocking have always been hit or miss. When they test the wafer/die they just punch them all with voltage and input freq to see which ones can hit it, and bin them accordingly.

Runs great and way more affordable than Intel. Noticed an immediate improvement in DCS for nothing more than a board and processor upgrade.

Agreed, my FX8350 I had at 5.31 Ghz only hit barely over 5.1 after 2 years, then after 4 years of Wear In on the Chip and VRM and several AMD AGESA Updates i was able to nudge mV a lil and get 5.31 GHz Stable.

Same Applies for my Ryzen Board, Initial Board Bios was stable when I got it, but I was not able to use the tighter clocked RAM XMP/AMP Presets without problems. AMD Rolled out the AGESA Bios Packages to Vendors who then put out the BIOS Updates and now I have no issues running tighter XMP/AMP Profiles.

THe Issue people are gonna have in the next month is when AMD Sendsz out the AGESA Package w/ the Fix, they will have to wait for Motherboard Manufactures to push out BIOS updates for the boards, and not all Motherboards get the same amount of attention.

I am very happy with my 3900X regardless of the boost clocks. You get more speed from reducing latency by tuning memory anyway. There is too much noise regarding some 50Mhz below spec and there isnt much gain from that IMHO. I laugh at thee 9900K!
