DCS : F4U-1 Corsair

I hope the second WW2 map currently in development will be a dedicated WW2 Pacific map. The Mariana screenshots look gorgeous, would be a waste if this will stay the only tropical region. Hopefully such Ocean + islands maps can be done rather quickly now, with the foundations build.

The one that was announced as a Europe map?

Not really excited for this map.....yet. The fact that they dodged WWII and made this in modern is rather disappointing.

Hopefully this will be the convertible map, between modern and WWII. Then there is still hope

As far as I know that is the plan. They will probably release the modern one first, and then the WW2 version later. Should be a much simpler map too.

You know Pacific is quite big part of earth i think right now it is not possible to make such a big map

It should be super easy, its 99% water. Will enable ED to make BIG maps. with a few islands.

Will definitely be picking up the F4U as that was my favorite Navy plane of WW2. As for my favorite allied fighter, I want someone to make a P-40. That is one warbird that is a necessity for any WW2 plane sim.

Maybe already asked (sorry if it is the case).

But with the F4U1D, are we going to have the British version with the short wing ?

As those version of Corsair were used in the Royal Navy in the Pacific and in Europe (most of them in Norway, but some of them were used over Normandy), it could be really nice to have this version of the F4U1D as we are going to have both Normandy and Mariana maps.

I'm not questioning your integrity Wulf, it's just that I have never ever heard or read about an F4U of any navy operating over the beaches of Normandy. I'd love to see a reference to them actually doing that. To my knowledge, the only ETO action the Corsairs ever participated in was up in Norway during the attacks on the Tirpitz, as you mentioned.

I don't think it would be too difficult to do though. Vought just removed the wingtip to accomodate the lower clearance of the RN carrier hanger decks and nothing else was changed. This would be much like the LF Spit we have now. I'd love to see M3 do it. It will only be a short time before somebody comes out with a skin for the Essex class carrier that will make it resemble A RN carrier, or use the excellent mod for the Hermes.

I didn't find the original source where I read it at first (years ago).

But If I remember correctly, some RN aircraft carrier were used for the cover of the invasion fleet. Corsair were not used over the Normandy itself and that why I think there are no Corsair with the invasion marking. But they were used in a secondary role to protect against the german navy (anti Uboat mission).

With the arrival of the Corsair and the Uboat in the asset pack, I think that would be something nice. Even if Corsair were not used that much in Europe.

The only carrier I know of deployed to cover the Normandy landings was the escort carrier HMS Emperor, former USS Pybu, but it carried Hellcats not Corsairs (Squadrons No. 800 and 804) . HMS Victorious had two Corsair squadrons (Squadrons No. 1834 and 1836) embarked at that time, but was attacking Norway just a days before (31.5.1944). The next carrier to receive Corsairs was HMS Formidable in July, but her squadrons were still in the US during Overlord.

I sure was late to this party !
I first posted about the Corsair
here on Jan 17th, 2020 and it must be about the time
I saw the Corsair video and fell in love.
This will be My favorite tail dragger..

Now that 2.7 is out, its going to be so awesome to fly the Corsair off a carrier in the Marianna's
Island Group and I have to buy one of the plastic 360 wheels to do reverse course
bombings faster.

I am really happy and excited that we will be getting an F4U Corsair in DCS, especially with WWII Pacific finally becoming a reality in DCS. You guys have an opportunity to do something really special here, on the level of the Heatblur Tomcat. Good luck and I am looking forward to getting to fly it...with VF-17 of course! :pilotfly:
