AJ-37 80s payload question

is it true that version AJ-37 of the 80s only loaded aim-9s in the belly?

that means that the most external pylons did not exist in the version AJ-37 of the eighties? because they can only load AIM-9s.

 

I hope somebody answers me I want to make realistic missions with the payload of the 80s

Yes, the AJ37 only could carry two Sidewinders ...

 

however, the Viggen version that Heatblur has simulated is the AJS37, which is a modernized version produced (actually, converted from AJ37 airframes) from 1993 to 1996. The AJS has an upgraded computer that allowed more weapon options, such as the Rb15F missile, the BK90 stand-off dispenser, and up to 6 sidewinders.

The outermost wing stations were originally intended for the rb 28 (AIM-4C, an early IR missile) but they were found to cause flutter and fatigue issues and were never used in service. The pylons therefore went unused for most of the aircraft's service life, until the AJS mod came around.

Thank you very much for your response, another question. The RB-15 in which year were already usable by the Viggen? I think it started to be used in the Swedish air force after 86? Or he could only use the AJS already entered in the 90s?

On 1986 the JA37 could carry only the earlier Rb04 missile. The Rb-15f could be carried by the JAS37 starting from 1993.

 

Initially the Rb15f was destined to be used by the Saab 39 Gripen, but as the Gripen development took longer than anticipated, the swedish air force upgraded the JA37 Viggen as an interim measure.

 

The Rb15f could also be carried by the armed recce version AJSH 37.

 

However, the Rb15 actually entered in service earlier, on 1984 with the swedish navy, which used it as a surface-surface missile similar to an Harpoon missile.

Could also mention that the rb24 is to heavy to be carried on the outmost pylons because of stressdamage in the wings and that would significantly reduce the lifetime of the frame. Therefor the outmost pylons was only allowed to be used in times of war.

This statement about the stress caused by the outboard Sidewinders always confuses me. In case of war during the 1970s/80s, would it have been possible to mount rb24 on the outboard hardpoints without modifications or not?

No, on that timeframe the Viggen AJ only could mount two sidewinders on its fuselage pylons.

Green munitions in the Swedish Air Force means “inert”. The live ones were mainly white. Photos of Viggens in the air with live weapons on the stations are exceptionally rare though. Live weapons were essentially never used in publicity shoots and were rarely carried of live fire training.

Actually, I’ve never seen a photo of a Viggen with an Rb04 on the ventral pylon ... so it may be an error on this document.

I really dont know for sure ... the EW equipment is very classified and very little info is published, My belief is that on the 80’s the viggen used an earlier Jamming Pod called Ericsson EriJammer 200, the AJS37 used the U22 and U22/a and the Later JA37 used the U95.

The AJ 37 (I presume JA 37 is a typo) could use the Rb 04 from the get go.

This picture is slightly misleading: the AJS 37 could carry four BK 90 capsules at the same time, but the weight impacted the flight performance too much for it to be a realistic option. So two capsules became standard.

If the outer pylons were enabled only in the early 90s, how come in DCS we can use them but only with old, rear-aspect RB24 versions of the Sidewinder? You'd think they'd be used for the RB74s all-aspect ones like the inner pylons...

I find it a bit puzzling how many people wants to use this attack aircraft as an interceptor ... on my missions I usually dont bother to mount any Sidewinder at all, using fast low level flight to evade any pursuing fighter :)
