Damage modeling in DCS various planes.

I have been flying now after year the A-10A, A-10C and Su-25A after longer phase with Su-25T and with DCS 1.5 Ihave experienced the same odd wondering, how "accurate" the damage modeling really is when comparing those to each other?

I mean, I can fly Su-25T and really get beaten by 12.7mm, 23mm and various IR missiles and yet fly away.

But then with A-10 models it is like if anything from 12.7mm even looks at me, master alarm will go crazy and 80/100 I am coming down with one wing off or engines on fire.

Sure I don't get the A-10 to kill me, as I can almost always jump off. As sometimes with Su-25T my cockpit is teared off with the titanium bathtub.

But the feeling is that Su-25 is the CAS aircraft, designed to take the beating and then A-10 variants are like fancy weapons platforms that can use cannon only when there isn't any kind AA unit aiming at it.

I havent found that, I mean I usually drag my A-10 home in a steaming pile of wreckage :)

She is plenty tough for me, within reason of course... Now the A-10 is a little more advanced being a PFM/ASM, so system modelling is better, its possible its easier to wound it over the Su-25T for that reason, full disclosure... I havent spent much time in the Su-25.

I notice this in the A10 as well. It seems like everytime this thing takes a bullet I lose my CDU/CICU/etc...really quickly. Now the plane will take a beating for sure but it seems like even 1 bullet and its lights out on the HUD, MFDs, engines, or whatever. Still flyable for a bit but it does seem very frail compared to my military days and what I remember my friends who worked on the A-10 used to tell me about how much damage it could withstand and still be functional.

Like what spawn said, i think it's because it's PFM modeled so it's much easier to hit something and for something to go wrong. But also, I do think that it needs to be a bit tougher despite it being easily damageable; the A-10 is known to be a very tough aircraft and I don't think the MFDs or HUD etc. should go out with a simple hit of a .50 or 12.7mm etc.

I concur, the SU25T is like a tank compared to my A10C, and like also said it does always seem to be displays go down so easily, even with the smaller bore weapons.

I don't wanna say how realistic it is as I never flew a real A10C, I never worked on them, and can only compare to the SU25T.

I am afraid to take A-10 to enemy airspace as if there is even a single IGLA it very likely shoots me down. And ground units with 12.7mm are the real cause for fear as they rip aircraft down so quickly and easily.

But in Su-25 I just laugh to the enemy. Even when I know that there are few shilkas, dozen of ZSU-23-2 and many Strela-1 and Strela-10M, I don't need to worry as I can just avoid the missiles with flares and IR jammer, control the engines heat easily and just use my speed as advantage.

I can take lots of hits and get even few missiles to my back with one engine burning and yet get to home.

My only real fear is that I am out of the flares at some point.

And the two systems are almost always down in A-10 after getting any hit, the HUD and Counter Measurements system (flares etc).

Like with A-10C it is that I flare and missile explodes at 50m from me and one fragment manages to destroy CMS. Or a pathetic T-55 with 12.7mm does same, rips off the wing or shoots engines.

Sure there is difference how agile Su-25 is, like I can just come in hot zone doing barrel rolls and zig-zag and shoot things with its pathetic cannon and get out without a scratch. But with A-10 it is like suicide.

I have been wondering is there something with the accuracy penalty. Like with a KA-50 that flying around ground units at 1km distance as 120-150kph they can't hit you with 12.7 like everyone is missing you. Fly a Su-25 at 550kph at 3km distance and bullets almost ricochet from plane.

Take the A-10A/C and it is like a magnet, sucking every possible hit it sees and gets destroyed with first.

It is with both, A-10A and A-10C, with Su-25A and Su-25T.

Doesn't both Su-25 have now AFM?

The A-10A I have no idea is it SFM or AFM as well but it gets same as A-10C.

I just cant accept that it is my fear that causes the A-10 fail on me ;-)
