AMD or Intel for DCS?

Recommended Posts

My mobo just died and I'm on the market for a new PC and don't know what CPU to get.

I am deciding between something like Intel 7600 or Ryzen 5 1600x.

Is the new AMD Ryzen series any good for DCS? Or should I stick to Intel?

DCS runs fantastic on my Ryzen7 1700 @3.8Ghz.

If you only care about DCS, then the Intel running the highest overclock possible will give you the best single threaded performance.

4 (i5) cores is starting to be less than ideal as more and more games/apps take advantage of as many cores as you can throw at them. The more cost effective and future proof option is the Ryzen 5 (6 cores and 12 threads), and a B350 motherboard. Incredible bang for the buck compared to an Intel setup.

Well darn PC died but if you could have waited longer I would have suggested, till when DCS 1.5 + 2.5 merge is complete by then new PC stuff on market.

In my opinion Intel is always a solid choice and high quality product.

Never seen a Intel CPU fail.

Well my honest opinion good luck and enjoy what ever path you take!

For enjoyment Watch..............

Its pretty impressive

I've always thought of AMD processors as requiring that extra attention that I just don't want to give. I've had several, admittedly not for a few years now but they never ran as consistently as Intel. What the new ones are doing, I'm not sure but I would suspect more of the same.

Yes, you can always wait for something. Then you can wait for whatevers next and again wait for the next. But his mobo died so he is not exactly in a position for waiting.

I had both companies products over the last few years, starting with Atholns and Pentrium 4s, then had a Phenom II x6, Core i7 2600k, Core i5 4670 and now I consider jumping into R7 1700. Both companies had their ups and downs, both had products that failed on me and I dont buy into that mantra that Intel makes superior products - Kabylake proves that even well designed Skylake with all the improvements can be wasted by poor IHS, that is "glued" rather than soldered like AMD counterparts.

Silvern, if you expect only and exclusively use your pc for DCS than maybe consider 7600 (but 7600k and than Z270 mobo to overclock it), if you plan only 7600 and no overclocking or want to more than just play dcs than dont even think about it - go for 1600X, overclock it to 3.9-4.0 Ghz since it should be doable even on B350 motherboard and enjoy two more cores and three times as many threads as core i5 would offer you.

As an option you can look on eBay for a working replacement MOBO.

Just ensure seller has a good rep so read his profile carefully preferably buy from a eBay shop front retailer just using eBay to rid of unwanted but working used parts.

I have done this a few times over the years.

As an example................ http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Gigabyte-GA-Z68P-DS3-Socket-1155-Motherboard-/112391349359?hash=item1a2b0be46f:g:EKgAAOSwRUhY-eiS

I am primarly doing DCS and an occasional Arma and hope to get into DCS VR.

My mobo left behind an orphaned I5 3550, 16GB DDR3 RAM which do not fit on the new mobos.

But finding a decent mobo with LGA1155 socket is hard in my country.

There is never a good time to buy a new PC as there is never a bad time to buy a new PC.

It constantly evolves and new things will always be on the horizon, other things will always hold you back too, the pro/contra game will always walk as your shadow.

It's like getting kids. If you wait for the right time to have a child you will NEVER have one as there never is a good time to have one. Some wise words from an old friend I have who told me this prior to our 1st, of now 6 :P

I tested my 1700X against sandy bridge, and kabylake in a thread next to this. The conclusion is that currently modern CPU's doesnt matter much as they once did, they all perform close enough for DCS. The GFX is likely what will differentiate systems apart for DCS performance.

That Being said, you can always appreciate the extra threads Ryzen systems brings to the table for everything else beyond DCS so, that 1600X is my advice for you.

It's coming this summer but it's the continuation of intel's policy to milk their customers for the same chip over and over again every year. You'll be paying a premium for an X299 motherboard and probably 400$ for a quad core chip that can be found on Z170 and Z270 platforms minus the crappy heat spreader. Thats right, likely the only difference.

Kaby Lake X seems a waste. Even for enthusiasts cheaper R7 8core platform is far more appealing. Coffe lake may be a more appealing mainstream alternative however who knows if this will come out in the next few months or at end of 2017. More and more I am leaning towards an R5 6 core/12 thread based rig.

If you also do graphics, photo, CAD, audio editing etc, I would consider more cores. Currently I'm running i7 5930K sure it's a bit of a waste in single threaded applications but if you can get more cores and have a use for them 6, 8,.. more, more cores sounds pretty attractive as long as single threaded performance is strong.

And when DCS gets to use more cores.

DCS only uses two cores, likewise with most sims. They have to keep all the calculations on one core to avoid introducing latency and errors. Other gamrs get away with it because they're not running complex physics calcs.

More cores won't benefit you. If DCS and sims are your main gig, Intel will typically yield better performance in these. Other stuff, it doesn't really matter.

Note : I have a quad core and disabled the second pair. It doesn't effect 99% of stuff.

Excellent tips, disable one core or two to reduce the heat. And pump more speed to the other ones.

When getting a CPU for DCS doesn't matter what brand you choose right now as long as it has at least 4 physical cores, then you only need to choose the best gfx that fits your budget and your good to go.

In my case I also play star citizen and the only CPU capable of some sort of future proofing within budget is the R7, so I just chose it for my new build.

I would buy an AMD now, hands down !

maybe the 1700x or 1800x as I would like to go 4GHz, but the lower ones do work very well too as Pilotasso's rig has shown.

+1 What sharpexb says

I have only dual core (hyperthreading, so 4 virtual cores) skylake I3 6100 3,7ghz and it runs dcs even better than my ex I5 3570k.

I think that my faster DDR4 ram also helps , because skylake cpus get boost from it better than old cpus.

Just got 970 replaced, now i have 1060 6gb and im verry happy how great my system runs even arma 3 Mp missions. And dcs VR use is great too.

So final word , you can get fast rig for dcs even budget.

Before someone comes and says that i should have got I5 etc.. this was budget build soon as skylakes were in shops. I like to use rest money to my kids, wife and Trans am .. in that order :)

Nice to see that you can get DCS to run well on a modern low-mid range PC. DCS isn't the HOG it used to be (Pun intended :) ) the hardware has caught up with the software. A good single threaded I3 or I5, a cheap SSD, 16Gb ram, and a GTX1060 6GB and you're good to go. Good post Haukka81.

Im still happy with my specs, though my GTX970 is beginning to show it's age ever so slightly.

Current specs: Windows 10 Home 64bit, i5-9600K @ 3.7 Ghz, 32GB DDR4 RAM, 1TB Samsung EVO 860 M.2 SSD, GAINWARD RTX2060 6GB, Oculus Rift S, MS FFB2 Sidewinder + Warthog Throttle Quadrant, Saitek Pro rudder pedals.

that sythetic benchmark has no translation to real world performance. For example, It puts a stock 2500K above a 1700X. Coincidentally I have both.

When testing in DCS I have proven that keeping the same GFX (a 970) the 1700X was 14% faster @3.85Ghz than the 2500K @ 4.5, with a 650Mhz disavantage. There were graphics bottle necking ocurring so the real difference likely is higher.

I had people demonstrated similar FPS with an 7700K. :)
