If you could have only one DCS module, which one?

If you could have only one DCS module, which one would it be?

The reason why I'm asking (besides giving something to think about) is that I find myself with too many modules to be able to master all of them. At the moment I find myself going back and forth between various aircraft, but forgetting parts of the first one while learning about the second one / third one etc.

For purpose of the poll (max 10 choices), I've skipped non-modern jets.

Modules: Bf 109, C-101, CE-II, F-5, Gazelle, Huey, Ka-50, Mi-8, MiG-15, MiG-19, MiG-21, Albatros, Viggen, Mirage 2000, Hornet, Yak-52, FC3

Personally I voted L-39 (ZA), because:

- It flies like a dream

- It's quite versatile (aerobatics, A2G and even A2A)

- It's easy to understand and handle in all respects

Modules: Bf 109, C-101, CE-II, F-5, Gazelle, Huey, Ka-50, Mi-8, MiG-15, MiG-19, MiG-21, Albatros, Viggen, Mirage 2000, Hornet, Yak-52, FC3

From that list, the F/A-18c.

It's the only plane, if finished, that can do everything. A/G, A/A, anti ship, SEAD....easy to start-up, to fly, can land on land or a carrier....what else do you want? :joystick::smilewink:

Modules: KA-50, A-10C, FC3, UH-1H, MI-8MTV2, CA, MIG-21bis, FW-190D9, Bf-109K4, F-86F, MIG-15bis, M-2000C, SA342 Gazelle, AJS-37 Viggen, F/A-18C, F-14, C-101, FW-190A8, F-16C, F-5E, JF-17, SC, Mi-24P Hind, AH-64D Apache, Mirage F1, F-4E Phantom II

System: Win 11 Pro 64bit, Ryzen 3800X, 32gb RAM DDR4-3200, PowerColor Radeon RX 6900XT Red Devil ,1 x Samsung SSD 970 EVO Plus 2TB NVMe, 2 x Samsung SSD 2TB + 1TB SATA, MFG Crosswind Rudder Pedals - VIRPIL T-50CM and VIRPIL MongoosT-50 Throttle - HP Reverg G2, using only the latest Open Beta, DCS settings

That’s why I usually fly a single aircraft for several months at a time, until I really feel like I’ve memorized every aspect of it. Currently, it’s the F-18 my current choice .. but I also fly the Viggen and the C101 every now and then, as by now I know those two like the palm of my hand :)

I hope to be able to learn the F-18 fully before the Tomcat arrives :D

Mi-8
This.

Oh come on people, he asked for modern jets in the poll!

As much as i love my MI-8(my most flown Module), it's not a modern jet :smilewink: and will probably be replaced by the MI-24 for most of my missions, except heavy sling loading. :joystick:

Sadly, my favorite DCS module (AJS-37) is not on the list, so I voted for AJS-39 instead. ;)

DCS Panavia Tornado (IDS) really needs to be a thing!

Thanks. The poll allows for up to 10 choices. I think helicopters and historical aircraft are quite something different than modern(-ish) jets and warrant their own poll. One of my favourite aircraft is the MiG-15, but it's kind of in it's own niche compared to the modern jets.

DCS: Gripen would be awesome though...

Actually I am doubting between the Albatros and the Viggen.

I've just casted the first vote for the MiG-21. Come on, guys, really?! I thought it would be number one easily.

Second choice would be the L-39ZA.

Third one the Ka-50.

From the list, F/A-18C no question. But the other plane that I would take is the F-14 Tomcat.

Unfortunately the Tomcat isn't out yet...

I have to say I'm a bit surprised about the overwhelming majority the Hornet has at the moment.

Although it's obviously an aircraft with which you can do a lot of things, I have to say that I find flying it (without combat) a bit boringly easy, to be honest...

The Viggen and the MiG-21 are also (somewhat) multirole and are more interesting to fly, in my opinion.

If I really could only have 1, it would be the Su-25T, because the price is right, and the TF-51 doesn't have any gunz :)

I'm sure there more than a few DCS buffs who spent all their bread on the computer itself, and only fly the '25T :)

It's not out yet, but the F14. Yeah, if I HAD to make that choice, that would be it. Sorry.

I'm not sure if asking others what they would pick is the best way to solve your issue. What is it that you want to get out of DCS?

My opinion on DCS as it is currently is that more modern aircraft work better in the simulation. The simplified AI flight model and the quirks of their spotting abilities are more exaggerated when you're flying stuff like WWII aircraft of the F-86. But there are exceptions. I consider the MiG-15 to be a pretty good module to obtain with its main weakness being the lack of an intercept target (ie B-29's). There is also the issue of unit variety, which is better for new planes. This pretty much makes the F/A-18 a top pick, but the A-10, AV-8, and Mirage 2000 are also good fits for DCS.

From your list in the poll, I would drop the F-5 and MiG-21 toward the bottom if you want to focus on air to air combat. It's not because they are bad modules, but they highlight some of the issues I mentioned above. The F-5 lacks some proper wingman commands for a fighter which makes coordinated combat with wingmen more difficult and both aircraft make it obvious that DCS lacks command and control/communication with other units. Keeping these in mind they can both be fun, but I think to get the most out of them you will have to wait for DCS to improve some more. They're good "casual" modules that you can fly on the side from time to time for sure.

You mentioned the L-39 and I would agree it's a good module to focus on. It's really fun to fly and can fit in a good variety of combat rolls. It does suffer a little from the same issues as the F-5 and MiG, but it's less of a fighter than they are so it doesn't feel as much like a critical part of the sim is missing.

Awaiting: DCS F-15C
