AMD system for DCS?

Recommended Posts

I've been using intel/nvidea for a fair few years now, but the new AMD chips and gfx cards are getting my attention as I am overdue a system makeover.

As well as gaming on my monitor I'm also a VR fan so any opinions on whether I should be looking at 9900k's and 2080's or the AMD option?

I've AMD mostly to lower the cost of my build (assembled last year), but nowadays there are intel processors much faster for DCS (where single thread performance is the most important aspect) and at similar overall cost (motherboard + processor)

Edit: Your processor is still quite potent, dont expect a really important improvement with a processor upgrade ... for example the Core i5 9600K LOOKS much faster, but that is actually when making full use of its 6 cores (yours has only 4) ... and that is something DCS cant do .. if you look at the single core performance, it is only about 20% higher.

So, a better bang for the buck would be an upgrade of the video card, where much higher increase percentages can be had.

Wait for the Ryzen 3000 series this summer (rumoured to be available 7 July) before making your decision.

They are coming out on 7nm, and are looking to be 5ghz+ with IPC on par or better than Intel. Rumour mill indicates single thread performance at least equal to, if not better than, intel - with up to 16 cores to boot.

What sandman said.

Also DCS is no longer pegged at single core and Intel AMD are realy neck to neck these days.

Also DCS is no longer pegged at single core ...

That's new to me, as I understand that DCS uses mostly a single core and only the audio tasks are derived to a second core ... where has ED said that the core sim was now multithreaded?

and Intel AMD are realy neck to neck these days.

I agree that the differences are small, but at the moment Intel is ahead in single core performance. I own a Ryzen, but I try to be objective when giving advice to other people.

It will run fine with any 4ghz CPU. What is really bottlenecking my FPS is the amount of graphics memory needed, in that regard the Radeon 7 could be a nice choice if you can get one, or I'd just wait for Navi this summer and hope they do it right.

Yes, listen to what Sandman said. The 3000 series should be insanely good and at less expensive with more bang for your buck - higher physical core count, significantly lower TDP, IPC on par with Intel's 9900K, PCIe 4.0 support, and it'll be on 7nm. Intel will not ship a mainstream cpu on 10nm at the earliest till sometime in 2020. Also consider that ED is eventually moving DCS to the Vulkan API, which will allow DCS to maximize all physical cores. i.e, the more cores the better the performance. Ryzen will offer at least 12 core/24 thread cpus with equal if not better IPC's than Intells 9900k for $330 US compared to Intells $550 US 14nm 9900k @ 8/16. With the money you save in cpu costs, you can throw into a better GPU.

Wait till July. It'll be worth it.

The ryzen5 2600 is no slouch, mine didn't overclock well but I've seen it hit 3.9 during stress testing right out of the box. For less than $300 for that and a halfway decent b450 mobo, you don't even have to wait if you don't want to

according to some leaks, 3000 is gonna hit the shelves soon and not as late as July.

As with all rumours, take a pinch of salt with it.

...and no way I would build a rig on intel these days again. Not before they come down to 10nm or even better. The gap is already pretty tight and will cross over with 7nm, then comes 5nm.... Intel, what's your plan ?

Ever since the game was ported to Dx11, the core limitation is not as bad as it was on Dx9. Now you are mostly bottle necked by GPU unless you are playing very heavy mission with a lot of ground units moving around.

There are already new BIOSes for x470 motherboards which support new Ryzen 3 series... My guess is we will see announcement really soon.

Do, or do not, there is no try.

X370 have gotten the new BIOS'es for Ryzen 3000 as well, but I advise you not to flash before the new CPU''s arrive because for my board they actually cause performance drops on current CPU's.

AMD system for DCS?

if you don’t need it right away, i would wait.

there has been much hope and many promises over the last ten years and they haven’t always come true.

give it a few months and see what gets delivered to the stores.

fingers crossed, we will have a new king.

Thanks for all the advice, I've had this system for a few years so holding off another few months to see what AMD bring to the party won't hurt!
