F/A-18C Hornet

BIGNEWY

Recommended Posts

This was a fun mission. I had two problems, which I'm sure were self induced:

1. I could not contact Arco 11. The Refueling menu after F10 was greyed out? I used M and dialed in the correct frequency 0n 295.4 AM, but menu stayed greyed out?

Great mission !

Grayed menus are a bug in DCS. If you have the correct frequency in advanced comms, you should be able to contact with the tanker even if it looks grayed. I edited the mission for 2 people MP with a friend and we both could refuel in parallel.

Persian Nights Turn Hot - MP F/A-18C Mission

Due to a significant lack of Hornet combat missions I'm posting a mission that is totally unpolished but still a lot of fun. I didn't intend on posting this but it has been so enjoyable I'd like to share it with the community. The briefing could do with a bit of fleshing out but this ought to get you started.

Quick Features/Mission Overview:

- Surface and air threats are randomized on each mission start to keep the threat picture different each time.

- Multiple flights with separate targets to choose from for replayability.

- No scripting used so far so adding other aircraft/units will not break mission functionality.

- Difficulty is randomized but this mission would suit 2 players up to 6 (Also possible to succeed as a singleton).

- Feel free to edit and use this mission as you please.

- Please bear in mind that there is no overbearing scripting so when you strike targets there is no 'mission complete' or any voice overs etc. I may add that sort of thing later but for the time being the missions are pretty cut and dry - fly the mission to the brief and you will be the judge of your own performance.

Persian Nights Turn Hot

June 1991

The United States and its allies are at War with Iran.

Day 1 of hostilities between the US and Iran has commenced. Overnight strategic strikes against Iranian IADS and major CCC nodes have been successful.

As day breaks over the Persian gulf the next wave of strikes is about to commence.

Join VMFA-533 spinning up at Al Dhafra in support of 1st Marine Expeditionary Force (1MEF) and it's impending assault on Iran.

BLUE TASK

SITUATION: 0600L

Iranian CCC and IADS have been dealt a significant blow after comprehensive cruise missile strikes launched from US Navy warships and USAF aircraft in the early hours of the morning.

VMFA-533 has received the ATO for the first day of strikes within the Marine Air Ground Task Force (MAGTF) AOR. The first Phase of the air war will involve further strikes on strategic CCC nodes, airbases, ammunition storage facilities and high value Iranian Army assets.

ATO:

DODGE1 (Strike):

- Strike Kish Island EWR site (Primary).

- Strike Ammunition storage facility at WP5 (Secondary).

THREATS:

- IRIAF Mig21s armed with R-60 (IR) and R-13M (IR) are known to be CAPing in the AO.

- Fixed SA-3 sites not hit in initial strikes may be present within AO.

- Mobile SA-6 and 8 are active within AO.

ASSETS:

AWACS - DARKSTAR (E3A) 251.000

TANKERS - TEXACO (KC130) 251.000

MIG SWEEP - ENFIELD11 (4xF15C)

SEAD - SPRINGFIELD21 (2xF18C)

Please leave feedback on how you found this mission. I will continue to update it as time allows - many improvements to be made.

I've been looking for any excuse to fly the shiny new hornet so thought I'd get my finger out and give this mission creation a bash.

My first attempt at putting together a small mission in the editor. No fancy scripting or anything yet.. still to learn all that. No voice overs, just messages. Maybe next time! Feedback encouraged! :smartass::joystick:

This is a SP mission for the Hornet on the Persian Gulf map. Difficulty varies depending on the results of AI vs AI engagements. The mission takes about an hour. Do not change load out as this will effect mission results. This is a trigger based mission so it may break if you do not fly it as intended.

SEE BRIEFING IMAGES FOR MORE DETAILS

PRE-EMPTIVE STRIKE

SITUATION:

Political tensions have been rising between the Red Coalition and the Blue Coalition in the Persian Gulf.

Over the past few weeks, U.S F-15C Eagles stationed in the region have carried out Combat Air Patrol duties in support of our allies, and E-3 AWACS have been flying day and night to monitor Red Coalition activity. With military confrontation looking more likely day by day, a naval task force, led by the Nimitz Class J. Stennis, has been diverted to the Persian Gulf, and is steaming at flank speed to the AO.

In response to this projection of power, the Red Coalition have been flying regular MiG-29, MiG-23, and MiG-21 patrols over Red Airspace.

Last week, a team of Special Forces, code name BLACKJACK, were inserted by sea near the heavily defended city of Bandar Abbas to gather intel on Red Coalition forces.

We've had word from Blackjack that the Iranians received a shipment of Russian SA-10 launchers under the cover of darkness, via the nearby port. BLACKJACK was able to track the launchers to a small military base in a town on the eastern outskirts of Bandar Abbas.

Intel suggests the launchers are undergoing a conversion programme to allow them to launch chemically armed, short range ballistic missiles, capable of threatening the Blue Coalition peninsula.

The U.S president deems this risk to innocent lives unacceptable and has sanctioned a pre-emptive strike to destroy or disable these launchers before they can be used against us or our allies.

F/A-18Cs aboard the Stennis will spearhead the strike.

BLUE TASK

(Being in the right place at the right time is critical to your success. Follow your flight plan as briefed.)

The USS John C. Stennis (CVN-74) has just arrived in the gulf. Command of this mission, callsign ARCHANGEL, will be stationed aboard J. Stennis.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

TARGET:

3 x SA-10 Launchers in military base @WP5

[To be engaged in 1 pass using 4 x Mk82]

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

THREATS:

In addition to enemy CAP and quick reaction intercept capabilities, intel from BLACKJACK and satellite imagery shows a network of air defences in the AO including AAA, MANPADs, and SA-3 systems. Likelihood of mobile SAM units is also high.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

BLACKJACK:

BLACKJACK has eyes on the target site and is currently concealed in the town directly west of the enemy base (Ref Slide 5). They have been ordered to deploy a white smoke marker on the roof of a tall building within the town at 12:55:00Z. This should help you locate the enemy base.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

TASKING:

The strike package will be made up of three seperate flights as follows:

COLT 1 - 2 x F-15C Fighter Sweep

UZI 1 - 2 x FA-18C SEAD

SPRINGFIELD 1 - 2 x FA-18C Strike (Your flight)

COLT 1 will depart Al Minhad AB and clear the AO of any MiG CAP flights present, then move to provide top cover whilst the attack is carried out.

UZI 1 and SPRINGFIELD 1 will depart from J.Stennis and orbit WP1 before arriving at scheduled push time at WP2. UZI 1 and SPRINGFIELD 1 will advance North towards the AO with 2 minute interval (approx 12nm) of seperation.

On approach to target area, UZI 1 will suppress enemy SA-3 systems using HARMs and RTB.

SPRINGFIELD 1 will then ingress fast and low, perform a pop-up attack and release all MK82's on the target site in a single pass.

PUSH of Sweep flight will be declared by COLT 1-1, code NEPTUNE

PUSH of SEAD flight will be declared by UZI 1-1, code PLUTO

PUSH of Strike flight will be declared by SPRINGFIELD 1-1, code JUPITER

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SUPPORT:

TEXACO KC-130 TANKER with 2x F-15C escort available for refuel:

TACAN 1X / 135MHZ AM (channel 3)

WIZARD E-3 AWACS available on 251MHZ AM (channel 1)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

RADIO/TACAN FREQUENCIES:

Texaco refuel : 135 MHZ AM (Channel 3) / TACAN 1X

WIZARD AWACS : 251MHZ AM (Channel 1)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

FLIGHTPLAN:
WP1 ORBIT 20,000ft MSL

WP2 PUSH 20,000ft MSL TOT 12:49:00z

(Maintain 20,000ft/390kts en-route WP3 and begin decent 5-7nm from WP3. Descend to 150ft AGL / 500+kts by the time you go feet dry)

WP3 LOW LEVEL Descend to 150ftAGL/500+KTS

WP4 IP 150ft AGL 550+KTS

(Perform pop-up attack upon reaching IP)

WP5 TGT 550+KTS

WP6 EGRESS 150ft AGL 550+KTS

WP7 CLIMB OUT 150ftAGL 550+KTS

(Climb to 20,000ftMSL after reaching WP7)

WP8 RTB - Enter pattern and perform Case 1 Recovery @ Stennis.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Be advised, it is suspected that the enemy is capable of quick repair/replace times for their Radar SAM systems, as well as Interception capabilities. Get in, and then Get out.

If intercepted, recommend you draw the enemy to our Eagles or take the fight well away from SAM threats.

If you are unable to make your assigned PUSH time, catch up to 10-15nm trail off UZI-1 en-route WP3

Been playing Eastern Front, Persian Nights and Preemptive Strike missions. Turned the single player into co-op by making both planes in the flight "clients". In Preemptive Strike I have to spawn first and get out of the way as my co-op wingman will spawn on me. A small price to pay given the ensuing fun. All these missions are really great fun and I'd just like to express my gratitude to the makers for putting them up here for us to enjoy. I've yet to do the Nevada missions as my "wingman" does not have the map, but I'll get there.

Appreciate your feedback dugite :). I'm motivated to get to making more if people are having fun so I'm glad to hear it. If anyone has a mission track handy for pre-emptive strike I'd be keen to see it to see how it played out and how I can improve next time :)

The missions are showing up fine, but as I use VR only, I cannot access the dropbox files when I'm in VR mode as there are no links available in non VR mode. Perhaps you can post those links on your user files page?

Nicely done Sedlo. I thought I would fly a left closed pattern on arrival to base, but I got busted by the tower ( nice touch ! ). I also like the complimentary music at the end during taxi.

Hey Shack! Just updated the campaign to version 1.1 with the briefings added to the in game kneeboards. That should help out with VR!

Thanks, gear_monkey! I'm glad people are enjoying the missions.

Awesome Sedlo!

Thanks for your dedication and hard work!

After playing Sedlo's campaign for the F-18, which was awesome, I went to look for more.

I'm now playing the Outremer campaign, ported to the M-2000, which I 'port' to the F-18 by just opening the mission in the editor before I start and changing out the M-2000 for an F-18. Give it a loadout of your choice (maybe read the briefing before to judge how much fuel and what kind of weapons you need) and set it to 'Player'. And you're ready to go. I haven't found anything that breaks yet and I completed the first four missions. I believe triggers are simple (waypoint-based or target-status-based).

Operation Dragon Fly

You will lead a flight of 4xF/A-18C, launching from USS Stennis at 0500 and feint towards Al Minhad AB, UAE. At Al Minhad WP4 descend to 200 FT and fly NOE and EMCON to the target. Stealth is essential for mission success. Maintain ingress ceiling of 280 ft. AGL to avoid detection by Iranian EWR. Pop up at 10 NM to target and destroy the boats and support facilities. Mission is single-player, but simple modification will permit 6 clients. Download from here:

Well, I've downloaded and installed it (tried both normal installation and OvGME), but it keeps telling me the same error of Bolek.

Any clue?

EDIT: Nevermind. I've managed it by myself (I was trying to install it in the main DCS folder...)

Yeah, for anyone else, copy the "main" folder itself (not contents) from the archive into your "Saved Games/DCS/Mods/tech/" folder.
