KiraTheCat
Someone said it!!!! Heatblur NEEDS to get William Dafoe to do the voice acting for Jester on this one. Devil 505, feet dry. You're kidding, right? That was hands down my favorite book as a kid. It was also hands down the worst movie rendition of a book I have ever seen. I get artistic license, but this one practically took the book script and burned it. What got me the hardest was the 'trying way too hard over the top Hollywierd macho swaggering toughguy BS, with the foul language at every possible opportunity' cherry on top. Yuck. As for the A-6 itself, I remember watching the carrier wings' strike capacity and range go through the floor in the 1990's. Very unfortunate to be removing aircraft from service without any replacement capability. We're very fortunate that it wasn't needed.

I want this more than anything. Reformers hate him! This one weird trick found by a bush pilot will make gunfighter obsessed old farts angry at your multi-role carrier deck line up! Kira, while I agree that the book to movie interpretation was a little liberal, and that also it might not be the cinematic great that Top Gun is, Defoe's portrayal of Tiger Cole was incredible, and he really made a nice pair to Johnson's Grafton. I think his voice would go nicely as an AI for the Intruder!!

Very unfortunate to be removing aircraft from service without any replacement capability. We're very fortunate that it wasn't needed. Speed and technology replaced payload capacity and durability. It would have been interesting to see where things would have gone if the Navy had carried through with the A-6F Intruder II and A-7F Super Corsair. Koriel
One thing I don't understand is why the last brand new A-6E intruder left the assembly line in 1992, but the Marine Corp retired it in 1993 and the Navy in 1997. It's so baffling and it seems like such a waste of money. I do hope Heatblur make the A-6E as a module and it would be pretty awesome if they made a flyable KA-6D packaged with it as well. Having a flyable tanker in DCS would be a game changer. +
Heimz
The last major update effort for the A-6E was the "System Weapons Improvement Program (SWIP)", which was focused on support of advanced missile armament, including the AGM-65 Maverick air-to-surface missile, the AGM-84 Harpoon antiship missile and its SLAM cruise missile derivative, and the AGM-88 HARM anti-radar missile. Some other improvements were implemented, such as a fire warning and extinguishing system. Not all SWIP machines received the updated wings. A second-phase element of the SWIP program added new avionics, including a Global Positioning System (GPS) navigation satellite receiver and a head-up display (HUD) http://www.airvectors.net/ava6.html And you can see the HUD in this pic: Edited March 8, 2019 by Heimz
Blaze1
A-6E HUD The following I believe, is a developmental version of the A-6E HUD, it never made it to service: Edited March 8, 2019 by Blaze1 Adding another photo.
Lobo LXII
In post #35,that is not a HUD. It's just a simple reflector sight. The large dial on the left of the housing is how you set the MIL's for manual bombing. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
Blaze1
One of the things I love about the Intruder, were some of the weird and wonderful configurations of how bombs were loaded on MERs, when the MERs weren't maxed out. Cole Virgil Cole ;) I'm with you on that about the movie not being quite accurate. The ending was just plain wrong! Did you ever read any of the other "Jake Grafton" books? The one with him as a Tomcat pilot was good :) Edited March 13, 2019 by Mongoose556 F14B AV8B N/A F-15C A-10A Black Shark 2.0 NTTR, PG X55 Rhino FreeTrackNOIR, . i7 6700k, 16GB, GeForce GTX 970 "A helicopter is a collection of rotating parts going round and round and reciprocating parts going up and down - all of them trying to become random in motion."
