Can't decide on a PC setup

Recommended Posts

I want to buy an optimized PC for the highest FPS in VR.

I try to build a killer system, but budget smart as well:

I currently can't decide between a pure gaming rig like the Z370 + Intel 8086K that will sacrifice scalability and expandability like more GPU's, extra USB ports, RAID CPU connected NVMe SSD's.

The Z370 can support only X16 PCIe lanes and I'm afraid that X2 GTX 1080ti's will saturate the X8 connections then. And what will happen if I'll connect 2 M.2 drives in RAID?

I could get the X299 chipset with a THREADRIPPER X1950 or a Core i9 with all the shebang and extra cores, but lose valuable FPS and paying a much higher price for this setup.

P-L-E-A-S-E HELP ME FIGURE IT OUT......

some benchmarks maybe, some SLI performance and utilization data and pricing maybe.

I'm at lost here guys :-\

I'm in exactly the same position as you are. Planning on building a new PC especially for DCS VR for quite some time now.

First I thought I'd wait for the next gen Nvidia GPU, which is getting pretty close now. But last week the new CPU i5/7/9-9000 series were announced, to be released somewhere in Oktober this year. This might be worth the wait as well

(I secretly hope for a bit of a price drop on both the CPU's and GPU's when the new generations are released, but probably those are false hopes :P)

System specs:

i7-8700K @stock speed - GTX 1080TI @ stock speed - AsRock Extreme4 Z370 - 32GB DDR4 @3GHz- 500GB SSD - 2TB nvme - 650W PSU

HP Reverb G1 v2 - Saitek Pro pedals - TM Warthog HOTAS - TM F/A-18 Grip - TM Cougar HOTAS (NN-Dan mod) & (throttle standalone mod) - VIRPIL VPC Rotor TCS Plus with ALPHA-L grip - Pointctrl & aux banks <-- must have for VR users!! - Andre's SimShaker Jetpad - Fully adjustable DIY playseat - VA+VAICOM

I am planning a new build this year also, already have the funds set aside for it.

Waiting till little later in the year to see what options might be available to me. I have been eyeing the Z370 board and the I-7 8086k, but going to wait little while longer.

My current build will have lasted me about 5 years when I do replace it - all I have done with it is upgraded GPU's, and am wanting my next build to do the same.

I am not happy with my Z370, too many bugs and BSOD's, memory incompatibility.

I would certainly also not consider a Z390.

My Z270 with the 7700k, that was great. Reliable, solid...my son is real happy with it.

I'd look at the AMD site if I was you, TR4 Threadripper2. That is serious stuff.
