How these patches will reflect on old systems with Sandy Bridge?

YMMV

But what I would do is to benchmark system as it is now

Then replicate the test again after applying the patch and see how it performs

Wonder if Chizh or other Eagle Dynamics Team member will update us, as they are able to assess the issue.

About as likely as getting an update from any other gaming company. Zero.

They are not in a position to test every chip that is out in the wild, and without testing all of them there is no point in testing any of them.

Got the new windows update... one program didn't like it, ASUS AI Suite. When I tried to reinstall AI Suite it caused all but 1 of my USB ports to stop working in Windows (they worked in BIOS). After lots of troubleshooting I finally retraced my steps and tried uninstalling AI Suite and it fixed everything.

While the new update is VERY important (important enough for Microsoft to push this update ASAP) it could screw some things up.

Edit: Some Anti-Virus programs are throwing up bluescreens too: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4072699/important-information-regarding-the-windows-security-updates-released

It's interesting there's two security flaws come out of this.

Meltdown is the first, affecting only Intel chips, but basically all of them from 1995 onwards.

But now we've got Spectre which is affecting lots of cpu's across the board, but is also the hardest to patch, but also split into 3 attack vectors, of which only some affect certain cpus.

Interesting times. Wonder if AMD will delay and fix their chip planned for this Q...

Intel is only saying AMD is affected to save face, and because AMD licenses X86 from Intel.

But its already been discussed and shown that AMDs chip design does not have the flaws of the Intel Core I series.

Ergh, my new in-progress build uses an ASUS mobo and I was planning to OC the crap out of it. How essential to overclocking is the AI suite?

AI Suite only makes it super easy to overclock in the OS. You can still very easily overclock in the BIOS either using the simple BIOS tools or manually doing it if you know what you are doing.

Windows updates generally happen silently in the background. You can check in your windows update settings.

Mine did update earlier today, but nothing in the installation notes about this fix so not sure if I have it yet or not.

I have seen some early reports that gaming is not really affected noticeably. Hoping that is the case.

I don't use AI Suite for anything. I let my fans run full tilt and leave the automation out of the picture. No dependencies, no issues.

And a loud freaking PC, lol.

if you use Noctua alll over your PC and even use those included LowNoise Adapter with each, you are cool & quiet same time at max allowed rpm, whereas 8 Corsair fans full tilt are a completely different sound level. Like a Owl vs. a C-5 Galaxy
