Tanker setup

Guys,

I added a tanker to a training-mission for the Hornet. When airborne, I set the TACAN to 13Y and activate A/A on the UFC. Unfortunately i don´t receive any data from Texaco... On HSI TACAN is on, on UFC as well... I reckon there´s a issue in the setup of the tanker, screenshot enclosed.

Any suggestions are much appreciated...

Can you try with X band ?

Yeah, tried that before... Played a bit with settings, suprisingly it´s gonna work now, but not with Y as fixed in the setting... Although it´s set to Y in advanced waypoint menu, i have to activate X and A/A... Don´t know what the key factor was...

You might want to speed the tanker up a little too?

About that; what would be the max speed setting? I tried 270kts but when loading the mission I noticed the tanker flying at 228kts.

What would be realistic tanker speeds for both the kc130 and kc135? (I know the kc135 basket is still bugged though)

The KC130's max ias is 336kts, which is a pretty comfortable speed at say 6-8000ft. Honestly of you put it up any higher it just becomes more unstable to refuel from. We need the Kc135bda to refuel from which can fly faster at higher altitudes.

Unfortunately the hose on the current KC-135BDA is super short and you can't connect unless your the best pilots in the game and can fly formation with 0 drift in any direction.

I watched some youtube videos of CF-188's refueling from a KC-135BDA and the hose is like 3 times longer than the hose on the one in game which is probably the main issue.

You could refuel from the S-3 Viking Tanker, but I don't know how many planes in can refuel. I've refueled from it and it seems pretty easy.

The basket for the bda is bugged, and needs changes in ED'S drogue logic. The ball is on their turf now, just awaiting news on this topic too.

You have the tanker orbiting before turning on the TACAN. Put the orbit after the activation and you are good.

Make sure you put a stop condition in the orbit for however long you want it to orbit. Put a waypoint after the orbit start to get a racetrack orbit between the two waypoints.

Hello

Did you configure the tacan in the mission editor?

Of course... ;-)

I've just tested it. Setting tanker tacan to Y23 in the mission editor. Started the flight and set tacan frequency to Y23, A/A transmit mode, and the HSI show the direction and distance to the tanker. It works.

I just set up the tacan directly on the plane, not on a waypoint. So the tacan is directly activated at the start of the flight.

edit: Just a question on wich aircraft do you fly? I tested it on the mirage 2000.

  • 2 weeks later...

Regarding the airplanes speed:

I usually look up the max IAS or Mach from the encyclopedia.

In ME you set a groundspeed, so I use http://www.hochwarth.com/misc/AviationCalculator.html to find out what GS I need to set to get a certain IAS at a certain altitude.

Mind you though, the speed that the airplane will actually fly is also dependend on the programmed wind speed/direction at that altitude.

Then I check also in game via F10 to see what angle of attack the airplane has. I regard any AOA over 5° in level flight (constant speed) too much...

Hope this is useful
