GTX 1080 ti Vs RTX 2080

Recommended Posts

Why are we seeing so many people out there throwing money at pre-owned GTX 1080 ti's when you can now pick up a RTX 2080 brand new for more or less the same cost?

In the gaming FPS benchmarks I've seen the RTX 2080 beats the GTX 1080 ti so I just don't get it.

Hi

I agree. I upgraded from GTX1080 to a 2080 and have not regretted it for a second. Smooth, clear, vibrant, superb with the Rift.

What AA & PD are you running ? Is it effective at minimising shimmering with the Rift ?

Hi SVSmokey

I run AA at +4 and PD 1.8 with no MSAA. Shimmering is still there but I also use 'Mustangs' Caucaus MOD which imroves the whole feel. I can live with the shimmering as it mostly affects the buildings.

Well, I've literally just bought a Gigabyte Z390 Aorus Master, an Intel 9900K and an EVGA RTX 2080 XC Ultra. It was an eye watering amount of money to spend in one hit, but, damn, it's going to be an awesome build :)

Those benchmarks mostly use founder edition 1080Ti's. For the 20 series they binned the founders higher so they are the overclocked ones. This is all down to clever marketing by NVIDIA.

Number of Rops is a consideration to me . I hate the shimmering , and the the higher rops count of the Ti suggests it may have more AA ability .

Might have something to do with people reporting hardware failure at an alarming rate amongst these cards. I almost bought a 2080Ti card, but was thankful to wait another month before reviews started coming out. Ill wait for a bit.

If the poor people would not be trying to milk the market with their used 1080Ti, such would be a good purchase. But someone asking a 500-600€ for a used 1080Ti is just too much.

General rule is, a used products gets price cut by 40-50% of the new one, it is just their own foolishness if they paid over 1000€ for one, but the last new ones that were available were 600-700€. But as you can't get those anymore, they can try to milk it.

So, no buy recommendation, better to pay that extra 100-200€ for a 2080 to lowest price I have seen as 680-750€. And instead a no warranty or few months, you can get full 3 years warranty.

Of course someone can go to buy a 2080 Ti, but for 1400-1500€ price tag.... I do not see sense even for that.

I will just wait that Vulkan gets implemented before I upgrade from 1080Ti to anything else.

Maybe after this year I can see reason to recommend people to buy a used 1080Ti if they prices drop to 350-400€ range as second hand, but...

Somehow it feels just so bad that DCS is not optimized for VR and multi-core processors (like use at least one core for BLUFOR ground units, one core for REDFOR ground units, one core for all air units and one core for the player own aircraft and all its functions... ) The DCS really should be split to multiple AI and logical calculations, instead trying to run all through one all seeing processing/AI. (this said that I don't really know how the DCS is written, but not so well).

One thing that I really miss from the early 2.5 versions was the amazing graphics, the trees rendered to infinity and no shimmering in buildings etc.

i7-8700k, 32GB 2666Mhz DDR4, 2x 2080S SLI 8GB, Oculus Rift S.

i7-8700k, 16GB 2666Mhz DDR4, 1080Ti 11GB, 27" 4K, 65" HDR 4K.

Yeah , i typically have 3 landings and takeoffs on every mission , so i spend some time taxiing on airbases , and the buildings , fences , aircraft and equipment are all a horrid shimmering mess-this with 2x MSSA and 1.3 pd . It utterly destroys what i otherwise consider to be one of DCS's greatest attributes-the graphics . And cities up-sun ? Fogedaboutit !

Is there something in having 11gb of vram agreed older ram as opposed to 8gb on new ram? Just a thought?

Possibly, for MP I regularly see 10.something GB of VRAM used out of 11GB (maybe 7GB SP depending.*) I did say possibly because I don't know what impact having 8GB VRAM does for performance.

I'd agree on 1080Ti pricing although maybe up to a slightly higher percentage depending. Although at a fair price the 1080Ti would be a reasonable choice performance wise.

The thing is I guess on paper GTX 1080Ti, RTX 2080, and Radeon VII look fairly similar although maybe drivers are letting the Radeon VII down a tad.

I'm looking forward to hearing about DCS user experience with Radeon VII especially in VR maybe the extra RAM and bandwidth might help.

Control is an illusion which usually shatters at the least expected moment.

Gazelle Mini-gun version is endorphins with rotors. See above.

Yeah, I bagged an EVGA 2080 XC Ultra for £699 last night so I'm happy. 3 her warranty, newer tech, better performer than the 1080ti so it made sense. I should get around 25% better performance than my 1080 @ 3440x1440

+1

Currently caught in this same conundrum. 1080ti is to pricey used and 2080 may not have the RAM needed in DCS to push VR. Very interested to see how the VII will perform in VR in DCS.

It will be better, but will not be Nirvana.

I did a new build about 6 weeks ago, it was a nice improvement for me but still DCS is very demanding on it in VR.

Hoping for some eventual performance optimizations for VR from DCS that Wags alluded to several weeks ago.
