agrasyuk
Craig, hi. was wondering if there been any progress on capture/export of CMSP data from the sim to the unit you built? thanks! Anton. Gadroc
I was looking into a few options on that today. New project at work has kicked up again along with focusing a little bit on some of my pit and catching up on a little personal IT admin chores (gadrocsworkshop launch, home server / parental controls update for the kids) has been front and center. I will be working on it again shortly.

fredd3039
System Requirements Gadroc and Deadman could you post your ideal operating platforms as far a s computer, graphics cards, etc. I am a layman and have no idea what to get for my cockpit simulator that I am building
metalnwood
I will chime in Fred, it really depends what you want to do? Like every sim, the more you throw at it the better it will perform. If you are looking at a pit like gadrocs that you want to run off a single machine then you may want to look at the ATI cards. I am up to five monitors on mine. The 7970 will let me add one more. When you talk about ideal but you havent said what you would do with it then I would say an i5 ivy bridge overclocked with a 7970, 16 GB ram, turn off the page file running win 7 64bit. If you dont like load times then add a ssd. Very easy to say the ideal machine but if you dont want to pay top $$ you will have to state your goals :)
fredd3039
metalnwood, Thanks for the information. I meant it when I said I was a layman as far as what works best for cockpit simulators. I am building a pit just like Gadrocks. I plan on having 1 large monitor for the view, 1 monitor for the gauges on the front panel, several smaller lcds for cdu, and the like. I read somewhere that Blackshark was dependant on the actual computer cpu and not video cards so it didn't matter what type of card you used but for A10 eveyone is talking about multiple monitors being supported by the graphics cards. It gets confusing. My old desktop is not good enough to run the cockpit and since I just shelled out $3000 for a laser to make panels I figure I should have a dedicated pc for this thing. The ultimate goal is to fly in a squadron online. Absolute realism is the thing I am most after. I have wanted to build a cockpit simulator for years now (17 to be exact) and I am finally financially able to give it my all and do it right from the start. That doesn't mean I want to throw money away either. I want a rig that will allow me to run several monitors (maybe up to 10) and will allow the game to have a great frame refresh rate (is this the correct term?) Upgradeability is also a must so I can continue to use A10 2 and 3 and 4 when they are released. Basically I need a book that tells me what to build to do speciffic things. cichlidfan
Two free pennies here... Regarding a 'book' there really is not one source for this kind of information especially with hardware changing as fast as it does. One of the first things you need to do is pin down what you want/need for displays (number, resolution and what they will be displaying). Once you have a handle on that you will be better able to make an intelligent choice for graphics cards. If you decide you need two or three graphics cards this will influence the selection of mobo, case and PSU among other things. metalnwood
It sounds like you are still a little while away from needing that PC. It takes a little while to build the pit, do the panels, get them interfaced etc. If your current machine is serving you well for your current setup I would hang off until you need the machine. Chances are what you buy today will be dated before you get to put it to the use you wanted. When you are on the leading edge and trying to keep up with the newest things there is not really any specific upgrade path. You usually just replace the whole thing except the power supply and case. Thats what I do but then I usually think I have a whole machine that I cant run because of no case or PS. So I end up buying those two and having another spare machine lol At the rate of about one a 12-18 months. You would struggle to get performance that you want with 10 monitors and probably you could not get support from a sim to run that other than fsx, prepar3d or xplane. The best advise if you want to buy now is buy the lastest, that will last the longest and the socket for the cpu will be around for the longest. It is CPU intensive but dont underestimate the GPU, I see my frames going up with everycard upgrade.
fredd3039
Frames So the Frames are basically how fast the screen changes and refreshes with new info? I mean the faster the frame rate the smoother the movements look on screen? Also does the size of the monitor matter? There are these new 62" 180 degree panoramic monitors that are huge. Lets say I want to use 1 of them for the main view, 1 20" flatscreen monitor for the instruments on the front panel and 3 3" VGA or LCD screens. Thats 5 total screens. Do the cards see it that way or do they see it as this much power needed for the huge monitor, less power needed for the 20" flatscreen etc.. cichlidfan
The video cards see pixels. They do not care how far apart they are. 1920x1080 is the same to the card whether it is on a 20" or 60" display. As for frames. A stable frame rate is more important than speed, up to a point, with regard to apparent smoothness. You will see changes in framerate more easily than you will notice the difference between two different but decent (above 30) stable framerates. Gadroc
Back at it again... whoo! Wow. It's been a long time since I've had something to post to this thread, but I finally had some vacation time this week. I spent a good deal of it in front of the computer. First I'm planning on upgrading my cmc laser. I'm going to upgrade it to a 16" x 24" cutting table along with motorized z axis as well as a much better gantry and drive configuration. This should also allow me to create jigs to make buttons and other multistep engraved items much easier to align. I'm following the buildlog 2.x laser plans and adding 40mm to the X axis so I can put in a full 12x24 sheet of acrylic so I don't have to cut them down before using anymore. I've ordered all the parts except the skin material and should be assembling it next weekend. Second I've done a LOT of CAD work for my pit this week and I'm finally read to cut the rest of the pit out this weekend. Here is a shot of the stand alone CP. I've merged some of Dimebug's designs with yk2iah's to fit my needs. I'm cutting the front panel out of 1/2" birch plywood, but if it's not strong enough I've found some HDPE plastic I'll order to recut it. Here you can see some of the individual components as well. The pit breaks down into 6 pieces (left console, right console, rudder floor, seat cradle, ejection seat and center console). Ohh... and I also designed out working ejection handles and seat arming lever with embedded limit switches. Just need to head down to the hardware store and get a few springs. Once I get this cut and installed I'll be able to go back to working on software and panels. Can't wait to actually be able to fly again. I have high hopes I'll be flying by the end of the weekend (depending on the wife letting me spend all day tomorrow down at the shop on the CNC). If not I'll be back in the saddle by the end of the week. Edited November 3, 2012 by Gadroc
deaconjb
Very nice Gadroc. Love the design. I think the 1/2" birch will be plenty strong and should work fine. It's what I'm currently working with on my pit and I've had no issues. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
Gadroc
Wheee... I've got parts... Well I got everything cut out for the pit, but only was able to assemble a little bit. CNC always takes a lot longer than you expect. You think you've got everything down and then your at the machine and realize you missed a part... or forgot a tool path... then you break a bit... sigh. That being said I'm very very happy. The CP came out great and looks to be plenty strong. I need to clean it up by filing down the rough edges and clearing out some of the plugs. Here is a shot of the front panel along with the three risers sitting on the bench. My gauges fit perfect (gotta love CAD)! I also reconfigured how the LCD holes are cut. I realized I didn't have enough ribbon cable to make it to the back of the panel. I'll be making some brackets to hang the VGA controllers closer to the screens. Now here is a shot of the partially assembled CP. I also got my seat pan together along with the seat back.
