DCS: P-47D-30 Discussion

Not at this time. Our primary WWII Warbirds focus is on improving the current stable.

Also, locating needed performance data on the P-47 has been a nightmare.

When we have new information on the P-47, it will be posted.

Thanks

Thank you for the update! I look forward to the improvements for the current lineup and think it's a great idea that you guys are doing that.

Is there any particular reason that ED is committed to the P-47? If the P-47 is proving to be difficult to gather information on, why wouldn't ED move on to the development of another WWII aircraft with readily available data?

P-47 has been a part of backers program dating back to original Kickstarter campaign, and ED tries to complete the program anyway. They also have most of external model and cockpit ready (judging from previously posted WIP shots).

I suppose then, a hefty amount of money and time has been invested into this plane already and dropping it completely now wouldn't be a great idea, unless they get stuck in a real dead end with required data.

Although the WWII birds we currently have are great already what areas of improvement are we talking? The only outstanding item I can recall being upgraded is the damage model. I look forward to whatever you improve on the current stable.

Off the top of my head from what ED have said/shown:

  • New general DM
  • Improved engine events/damage. (They've already added BF109 sound/exhaust effects when incurring damage when running max ata w/o MW50 + Spitfire actually spitting fire when overprimed etc..). IIRC there's plans for visual oil and coolant leaks.
  • More toys: Spitfire is getting bombs soon, BF109 will maybe get cannons etc...
  • P-51D remodel/redesign to an earlier ETO version, rather than the current v.late war PTO we have now
  • Me262 in the pipeline

I wish someone had these docs here in Brazil since the Air force used P-47Ds.

Just that it's the" best" warbird of that era period.

All I want is the P-47. I'll leave DCS if it doesn't come.

Another sim I fly is coming out with the P-47. I don't hear them complaining about not finding the needed info.

Then I would question the modeling quality if that is the case.

They don't use the same data ED does, they could do a SFM for the P-47, but ED wouldn't be happy with it, and it is one of the reasons ED is popular, that it prides itself in the most realistic FM's out there. Just recently that other sim added an updated FM, it added some things we have seen in DCS for years, but they are still behind on fidelity.

None of this is a knock to any other sim, those other sims are fun and have their place, ED has chosen to go for a certain bar, and right now are not willing to lower it.

ED is still committed to the P-47, it doesn't mean other planes cant be done in and around the P-47 if the data isn't coming in fast enough.

I understand that and appreciate it. Otherwise, I wouldn't be here. However, we're talking about years in delaying the P-47. That's kind of hard to accept.

I also have to point out if ED got everything perfect there would never be a need for any plane updates. Is that the case?

The F/A-18 will be released incomplete. Why can't the P-47 get the same thing? release it with the best info you have now with the understanding that it will be updated later. Some members don't like that, but others will buy an early release. In the end we all get the same plane.

While the Hornet wont release complete, it's not because they are missing information, rather it's that the amount of work going into all the systems is so huge they thought better than waiting till it was complete. I dont always understand everything about what ED needs for a module, but at this point they dont have enough to release it, even Early Access.

It's more than likely BECAUSE Eagle Dynamics takes the trouble to do things as accurately as possible from reliable and accurate data that you came to DCS World in the first place. It is unfortunate that the P-47 has some holes in the necessary date right now, but that's life.

Fundamentally, they're still plugging away at it. I can safely say that in the entire history of DCS World, no one has ever complained that a module was released before the client base was ready for it. When you demand the levels of accuracy that ED aspire to, second best won't cut it. They'd sooner not release a product than release one that was based on pure conjecture - which says a lot about what is deemed acceptable elsewhere.

You give me hope - I'm "only" 52 but I feel like my time in sims (and worst of all, VR) is very limited. Mind you, with my situation I doubt I will even reach your age, so I suppose I don't need to worry about it :D

While I am not unhappy about the delay, I do have to wonder why they started work on an aircraft without a source for the necessary information needed to complete it.

If I am understanding your question my guess is they are trying to honor the kickstarter deliverable. Without really knowing along the way they would hit a few snags in necessary information. Maybe I am not fully understanding you Cich.

Finding the needed documents is part of the work, other things can be going on at the same time, such as sound collection, 3D modelling, etc...
