VC
Surprised nobody here has picked up on this already: http://alert5.com/2020/09/23/russian-su-30sm-crashes-said-to-have-been-shot-down-by-su-35-during-dogfight-training/ so... apparently Russian fighters sit around loaded with live ammo and they forget to remove it for trainings? And do these jets not have a "Master Arm - TRAINING" mode, that simulates the tracking symbology but inhibits actual firing? VC =X51= Squadron is recruiting! rrohde
I read that news piece earlier today as well. At least the pilots ejected safely. Reminds me of how much we need an Su-35 in DCS, as that was the perpetrator. ;) Accidents happen; there was the F-16 that flew into its own bullets, and the other incident where a technician fired rounds from an F-16 that totaled another F-16 on the ground. AeriaGloria
I want to know the backstory to this now. Surprisingly not that long ago https://www.thedrive.com/the-war-zone/27620/russian-mig-31-foxhound-shot-down-its-wingman-during-disastrous-live-fire-exercise Atleast there shouldn’t be doubts about the effectiveness of R-33 now.... Seaeagle
No but there should now be doubts about how it works; The R-33 is a very long-range air-to-air missile that can be loosely considered an analog for the American AIM-54 Phoenix long-range air-to-air missile. It uses Inertial Navigation System guidance to get to the general target area after getting cued in the right direction by the launching aircraft. A semi-active radar homing system helps with initial target acquisition and then provides updated position information during the missile's mid-course flight profile. An active radar seeker in the missile kicks in during the terminal phase to guide it the rest of the way to the target. It may be loosely considered an analogue of the AIM-54, but the above description is only accurate for that(and only for the C version even)... certainly not for the R-33 :)

VC
Still makes me question why they don't have (or weren't using) some kind of training/simulation mode of master arm. Official word was an IFF related mistake, I’m sure if target drones were involved that could be one reason, if they were intending for a live launch Black Shark Den Squadron Member: We are open to new recruits, click here to check us out or apply to join! https://blacksharkden.com

Got a source on the Viper that caught its own rounds? I recall the Danes being the ones who scored an own goal with that tech who bullseyed the other Viper. But, I hadn't heard of one getting hit by its own rounds. I've heard of an F-11F Tiger that managed to gunkill itself! http://www.aerofiles.com/tiger-tail.html Reformers hate him! This one weird trick found by a bush pilot will make gunfighter obsessed old farts angry at your multi-role carrier deck line up!
Seaeagle
Got a source on the Viper that caught its own rounds? I believe he was refering to this: https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2019/04/dutch-f-16-takes-cannon-fire-from-itself/ I recall the Danes being the ones who scored an own goal with that tech who bullseyed the other Viper. No not us :) - that accident happened in Belgium. There was another recent incident in Norway, where an F-16 accidently strafed a manned control tower. Official word was an IFF related mistake, I’m sure if target drones were involved that could be one reason, if they were intending for a live launch Human error: the power of the gun was not turned off - this had to be done by technical personnel on the ground. Also, the pilot did not test firing to the side (to check that the gun is not loaded) Мои авиафото
