upgrade intel i7 4790k to Intel i7-7820X

+1 on the Noctua. I never really hear mine. Been a solid air cooler.

Honnestly, i would wait for the 8700k, looks like Intel finally moved it's ass with the Ryzen release, it's gonna have 6 cores, finally, and it should in theory, if the rumors are right, be about 11% faster then the 7700k (wich wasn't much of an upgrade from the 6700K), but a 7820X for gaming is ridiculous and useless, the boards are more expensive and 99% of the time, games won't take advantage of all the cores.

That or a Ryzen 5/7 chip, very compelling and costs way less then the equivalent Intel chips, in fact i need to upgrade soon too and i'd probably go for Ryzen.

I was going to upgrade my rig (well buy a new one and pass on current) this month but will have to go for i7-8800k - although those multi-cores dont help in DCS right now I play a heap of other sims/strategy games which will take advantage of it.

Its a new architecture too so I feel that going 7700k is buying obsolete parts however I also guess the 8th gen will be out of date just as quick when Intel bust the 10nm.

1080ti should also see me through a few years before that becomes the bottleneck.

If the i5 has more GHz but the i7 has more cores, does the 2.5 engine use more cores for better performance, could VR be better supported with "moar cores"?

If you actually need multi-core, why don't you consider AMD's Threadripper ?

I personally think it is superior, newest benchmarks had it on-par with the fastest multicore from Intel for either less money or more cores for same money, in addition you get ECC and 64 Lanes and NVMe Raid without extra price tag. I dont see any Intel offering the same.

Make sure the surfaces are very clean and that you use just a tiny amount of thermal paste in a small cross in the middle of the CPU. :thumbup:

Yes that is preferable.

This is a good way to add paste but I use paste in a small cross in the middle. Have worked well all the time. Some videos are recommending using a credit card and drag the paste out but if you get a air pocket it can be terrible. Adding from the middle as shown in the video will ensure that there is no air bubble between the CPU and the heat sink. And you should always only apply paste to the CPU, not the heat sink. The paste will slowly spread and cover all the CPU after running heated for some time. It is important to use the PC once builth and not let the paste just sit there, it will get solid in a few days. :)

ASUS have their own software to OC. I don't know what Gigabyte has but I would look for that first.

Also, it's not a bad idea to put a tiny amount of paste on both surfaces (cpu and cooler), rub it in, then wipe it all off using lint free cloth. I'm told that this fills the microscopic imperfections with the paste. You then apply as above.

Maybe it was already covered in the video. Not sure.

wait for the 8700K I7 later this year, it will be faster than the 7820X for gaming and for less money.

 

Currently the 7820X scores the same in games as the AMD R7, but the later costs half. Take your pick.

When I am OCing I tend do the following

1. Take a backup before begining (just incase OC is unstable and borks my OS)

2. Overclock a bit

3. Run Intel burn test for about 5-10 runs to see what my Max CPU temp is likely to be

4. Run prime95 or OCCT for about 12hours to make sure I get no errors

5. If that passes and I want to go higher goto step 2
