Best CPU for socket 2066?

Recommended Posts

Hi all.

Wich one of this two cpu's would you recommend me for DCS? Also have planned to use DCS and another sim with functional cockpit (7 screens + 3 for visuals).

I have to choose between i9 7900X or i7 7740X (rest of components in my signature below). For playing in both, screen and VR modes.

I know that X cpu's are not the better option at this moment for playing DCS, but this is my hardware at present moment.

Thank you.

Antonio.

Those are both not optimal choices (the 7800X or the 7820X would be better).

I was going to recommend you the 7740X but then your dual GFX setup and the requirement for that many screens leans me towards the 7900X. I dont think quad cores can really be up to the task except casual shootemup gaming these days.

In all honesty I think you are wasting your money even if thats 2nd hand hardware. 8700K CPU + Z370 MOBO would be the ideal if you want to stay on Intel side.

7820 if at all, and a good good DIY Waterloop + a beefy PSU

I'd sell the mobo and go 8700k/Z370 and 5G on all cores. That you will never achieve on the other socket and 2 more cores.

Your best option is to sell the motherboard and get a a Z370 +i7-8700k. This will result in a net savings and a vastly superior gaming system. If you need quad channel memory and that is why you think you need x299, then the i7-7740x isn't even an option as it only uses dual channel memory, disables half the DIMM slots and nearly all the PCI as well. The lowest end X299 CPU with any use case at all is the 7820X but I still can't recommend it. The whole X299 platform has been a disaster. It never should have seen the light of day.

System specs: i5-10600k (4.9 GHz), RX 6950XT, 32GB DDR4 3200, NVMe SSD, Reverb G2, WinWing Super Libra/Taurus, CH Pro Pedals.

Though I tend to keep up with the current gen hardware. I am really glad that I spent the money on the house during that period. :)

Glad I saw this thread while researching. I was originally planning a socket 2066 build with an i7-7740k but it's true, it looks like only 16 lanes of PCI express are there and it's only dual channel DDR4 memory on there. Was going to use the ASUS X299 Prime deluxe but it looks like 1151 may be a better bet for performance? I was going to go with a 1080Ti and a Samsung 860 SSD for operating system and also a separate SSD for putting DCS on. I want to max this build out, just build a real ripper of a system that would be pretty future proof, I have an AMD Phenom II x6 1100T and 16 G of ram with a GTX 970 right now and it runs DCS 2.5 fairly well but my aim is to build something that can run super smooth with no lags. Any suggestions are welcome, I'm now considering going to socket 1151.

Samolyet,

If you look for the fastest DCS CPU then a 8700k is unbeatable but comes with it's known drawbacks. There is a bad TIM applied, delid is very welcome to drop temp by 15-20°C, higher price, higher motherboard price if you want to overclock ( you want that ! ).

The good part is, if you are somewhat lucky you can go 5G or even more if you spend some time with your rig overclocking.

If I had to buy new, I would not buy this 8700k again.

I'd save the money for the delidder, Liquid Metal + Access., lesser price overall and get me a AMD Ryzen 2700x with 8 cores. The saved money I`d put in a 4k screen instead of a WQHD screen or in some more RAM/SSD...whatever.

my system is nice but it's Bios's are a nightmare, RAM compatibility is not so nice either. Actually no reason to recommend other than it does the magic 5.2G and runs DCS like a charm.

There are many many things I dislike about this 1151 rubbish.

Personally, I am waiting for TR2. Threadripper #2.

Intel has 5G.

AMD has everything else equal or better and for less money.

So concerning mobo, is the ASUS Z370 ROG MAXIMUS X HERO (WiFi version) a good choice?

Thanks.

The WiFi version has a trade off for the added WLAN chip iirc, it has less USB3.x front-out sockets.

Double check that with the non-WiFi if you need as much USB as you possibly can.
