Interested in your thoughts on improvement in DCS over the 1080ti.

I am tempted by the Strix but I can't bring myself to pay NZ$2,500 for a 15% improvement..

Yeah totally, I intend to do a few tests, so if anyone wants to know a specific let me know. It wouldn't surprise me given how CPU bound DCS is if I only get 10%

If I were you I would opt for a CPU upgrade, I think that would help you the most.

Current settings and performance flying downtown Dubi. (58-60fps) (looking straight)

I would have to disagree - my CPU is nowhere near fully utilised in DCS, whereas my GPU is fully maxed out at 40 fps in some high-density areas with my current settings. Generally sits around 75%.

DCS still doesn't make full use of current CPU's - and the upgrade I can do without changing my mobo (and entire system from scratch - no thanks) is minimal, i7 7700K.

The best upgrade I can do at the moment is a new GPU and possibly another 16GB of RAM.

Your GPU usage is at 100% and your CPU is normally around 75%? Interesting, post a screen shot. Do you have HT on or off with that 4c/8t 6700k?

Well this is surprising to me, I dropped my 8700k down to 4.4ghz and saw no change. Actually a tad better and with a little less cpu usage. I'm going to test at 4.0ghz next..

Alright found the first noticeable bottleneck (with this test) at 3.6ghz

No - my GPU is 100% over busy built-up areas....CPU is always steady at about 25%

My GPU is normally around 75% during normal flying. This is a shot from today - just updated my Bios and left everything on my CPU as stock settings.

This is the AV8 Instant Action flight at Caucasus - which is always pretty heavy for me FPS-wise.

Is it capped at 40fps? What's keeping the gpu from being at 100%?

Yes Rift S is either 40 or 80 fps.

Yeah I have tried that with the Rift S - but even with ASW off it still sits at 40 fps regardless...something to do with the Rift S now, hopefully they change it.

More testing at 5ghz. What I notice now is although the peak fps is about the same when at 5ghz compared to 4.0 or 4.4, the FPS is more stable (higher average fps). And if you look at the GPU usage graph its smoother at 5ghz.

Using FRAPS I recorded the FPS for 60 seconds, trying to keep the flight path as close as possible each time flying Downtown Dubi, here were the results.

5.0ghz

Frames, Time (ms), Min, Max, Avg

3614, 60000, 56, 65, 60.233

4.4ghz

This is interesting, I am about to update the bios on my MB so I loaded the "optimized defaults" then decided to test again. The CPU looks to be running at 4.3ghz and the ram is at 2133 c15. I think the ram speed created the bottleneck in this test.

Frames, Time (ms), Min, Max, Avg

3230, 60000, 49, 58, 53.833
