Is this thing worth the price on sale?

Well, it's fun to fly it. But I wish the developers would give it some love. There are known bugs, which haven't been corrected since something like 4 or 5 month. And the "English cockpit" is still a mess of Russian and English instruments. If aerobatics is your thing, the fun might even last longer than 3 days. If not, you'll be bored pretty soon - like me. :(

I dont have the Yak-52, but the CE2 has been grat fun .. I dont really need to even create missions for it, as not much is needed to practice aerobatics .. just set a nice time of day and weather and off you go :)

It's one of my favorites, but depends on your priorities. I'm biased toward 'joy of flight' mentality, if speed and 'splosions are your thing then obviously you'll want to give it a pass. Sidenote, there are a LOT of really fantastic skins available.

Well, while I prefer combat sims, I have also played civilian flight simulators for a looong time, since the first Microsoft Flight Simulator, to X-Plane 10 (I refuse to pay for X-Plane 11 and all of the new DLC aircraft, shame on them). I even have a Cessna Flight Yoke, 2 throttle quadrants, a cessna trim, and recently I got the Saitek Flight Pro switch panel, radio panel and multi panel. So yes, I enjoy regular flying too.

Can you enjoy flying this old eastern Cessna?

Yes, you can enjoy the Yak-52 as the module offers a lot of potential at a reasonable price, when bought in a sale.

The only reason I can't recommend this is, it has received little developer attention since it's release.

Review:

TL;DR:

A unfinished module that could have been good, due to it's limited use in DCS and lack of active development, not recommended.

Detail:

+ A well made module

+ good soundscape (creaks and squeeks as it bounces along the taxi way, etc.)

+ good flight model

- very basic instruments, so no night flights/IFR

• metric instruments (- if you're used to knots/ft)

- no combat capability

+ good for basic instruction, aerobatics and formation flying with a friend

• multicrew compatible if both players own the module

+ easy to fly if you've already learn't the free TF-51D or flown the Spitfire, etc.

+/- it's slow (210km/h (114knots) @ 500m (1640ft)), which is a pain but also makes it great for low level sight seeing.

• produced for a private contract with permission to sell to the public.

Cons:

- 3 training missions and an average of 4 Instant Action Missions per map, so you'll want to learn the Mission Editor, etc

- ADF doesn't work on the HSI but is work in progress

- missing low detail LODs and damage 3D models (high detail LOD effects FPS, wreckage turns into a Bf 109).

- Very limited number of 'skins' and only for Russia, there's handfull of user files uploaded but ED should have included at least one (fictional ?) US skin for BLUFOR (or made the Russian skins available for all countries) IMHO

- It doesn't really fit with the rest of DCS (can't spot/mark targets, etc) and the free TF-51D is 'better' in most respects, except for ease of use.

Not recommended as it's unfinished and not in active development.

Which one works as the better basic two seat trainer, this or the L-39?

The L-39 is finished and has a lovely dlc campaign .. its no contest.

L-39 for jets, Yak-52 for WWII props, if you are looking for something easier than the free TF-51D or just different.

The L-39 has far more options with ADF for none precision NDB approaches and RSB/PRMG (Russian Military TACAN/ILS equivalents) in IFR, crosswind nav/landing, etc.

L-39ZA is armed, so you've old school depression tables for guns, rockets, light (250kg IIRC) bombs or R3/R60 IR Missiles, to follow up after covering basic training, formation flight, etc.

Yak-52 -> L-39C -> Any jet you want to learn.

That is why the Yak-52 is great, it is the first step to learn flying. Then you jump to L-39 to learn how to fly jets etc. And finally you can get to do combat etc.

The Yak-52 is nice that it can allow you shake off some bad habits in the basics. Then L-39 helps in that even more and you will value both more in any other jet then when you hone your skills in the basics.

I liked a lot of the Hawk T.1 but I was as many other sad/frustrated when it didn't get developed and finally dropped. So because that I purchased L-39 to replace the Hawk, while the original idea was to have Hawk and Albatross to do some basic trainings now and then in both Imperial as Metric cockpits, even when L-39 supports both.

And I got odd idea to buy Yak-52, for no reason really. But I have been fairly happy for it. It is more like a "have fun on your nearby parking slot with your car" than anything else then. So you will learn to do the acrobatics and BFM and sightseeing.

The Yak-52 is great example how a DCS World needs a civilian aircrafts, we would really need few civilian passenger (like 7-15 passengers) or transport props like Il-12 and then small jets like Yak-40 etc. We would as well need large ones like actual Boeing 747 etc in the end. Just like the Wags said in the one interview that is the goal to start get a more civilian aircrafts (IMHO as long they are high quality ones like now, even if then just Su-25T level in cockpit operations).

There would be many military operations and tasks to fly with those virtual pilots flying those. Intercepts, air policing, escorting, transporting etc.

There are more those who want to fly civilian aircrafts in sake of the visuals and the actual flying, than those who want to see things go *boom*. So we can fill the skies, airfields etc with civilian aircrafts more easily than with any combat aircrafts.

I'm already proficient, but have a ten year old I'd like to teach. Have two rigs and two HMD's ready to go, they've been racing cars, but one shows high aptitude and interest in aviation. I've got limited time, so the two seat should get us going faster through the basics.

Think the L-39 will do fine as a basic trainer, looks quite capable on utube, nice to have the weapons option as the next step. We'll be looking at jets in the future any way. Thanks for the input all.

Thanks for you answers. I finally picked the Yak 52 up. The only aircraft I don't own is the CE2. Yes, I even own the Hawk.

And agreed on having some small civilian aircraft. We could start with a DC-3/C-47.

Also some bombers would be nice.

I love the Yak for VR as well.

It's simple and the instruments are clear which makes it a joy to fly and enjoy the experience.

Plus as Fri13 said at the same time it does a good job of helping to break the bad habits I've picked up flying FBW aircraft.

(C-101 is fantastic in VR as well)

Yes for 20 USD I think this plane is great. The tutorials are few but comprehensive enough as there is not any weapon system on the plane. I like the authenticity of the Russian guy telling you how to fly and taxi :D It flies really nice too and as some others have said I really enjoy flying this plane in VR. I don't have the other trainers but I used to fly my P51 a lot just cruising and doing VFR flying, so this was a good pickup. I think my next grab will be another prop plane or jet trainer. Maybe even CEII, since this module changed my opinion on aerobatic planes. Can't wait to see what else we might get in terms of diverse modules for DCS. Would love to see a DC3 :D

However, if you require constant updates, damage model, etc... maybe not your plane right now. But I think for 20USD its a solid investment for ED module.
