Captain Orso
Is there finally going to be a follow task for the SAR helicopter to actually follow the moving carrier? Also, CAP orbits which can be set up either circling the carrier or at a specific bearing, or direction, or between carrier and a threat direction? 1 When you hit the wrong button on take-off System Specs. WOPR
You can do this pretty easily with MOOSE, but I agree that some basic ship formation options with the AI units would be a good thing.
Tippis
You can do this pretty easily with MOOSE, but I agree that some basic ship formation options with the AI units would be a good thing. Notably, the option already exists for escorting ground units — it just doesn't work with ships. In fact, it exists in multiple forms depending on what kind of unit you want to tie to what other type of unit, but with no real consistency and with a lot of overlap. The code, AI, and general tasking system could be massively improved by consolidating all those different methods into one and having the background logic decide what any given combination actually means. 1 ❧ ❧ Inside you are two wolves. Captain Orso
I believe I've actually seen a video on what kind of escoring tasks you can configure with MOOSE. Amazingly excellent the results, but I don't know lua scripting, and IIRC to even understand the MOOSE documentation, you first have to understand lua. So it's not really a solution for the masses. A CAP over a moving taskforce, or a safety helicopter during take off and landing operations, is a rather standard task, and as such, ought to be part of DCS carrier operations in general, and easy for everyone to implement. 1 When you hit the wrong button on take-off System Specs. TonyG
As mentioned MOOSE already done this as part of the Airboss class. I’ve got a rescue helo, a low tanker in a close orbit and a high tanker (could be swapped to an AWACs) in a higher wider orbit. https://flightcontrol-master.github.io/MOOSE_DOCS_DEVELOP/Documentation/Ops.Airboss.html
WytchCrypt
I currently have a workaround. The Stennis is moving on whatever heading at 11kts with 2 rescue helos on either side of the ship at 100ft flying a parallel course at the same speed. Works for simple carrier ops missions requiring no change of course for the Stennis, but haven't tried it with the Stennis making multiple course changes. I'd guess the helos would lose their tight escort position after a course change or two... Highwayman-Ed
and if you place an aircraft staying on the deck of the Stennis and ask the helicopter to escort this aircraft ? Doesn't work, unfortunately :( 1. It must be a helicopter that it follows, and right now placing an uncontrolled helo on the deck blocks cats 1 & 2. 2. If the target helicopter is uncontrolled, the follower goes into an odd orbit. 3. If the target helicopter is flying, you are in no better position as it will drift also. 4. If the target helicopter tries to land, so does the follower. 5. Landing the target helicopter using the LandingReFuAr with a timeout and a further waypoint, results in the same outcome as item 4 6. Can't place a vehicle to 'Escort" on the deck of the carrier, but an SH-60 does not have the escort task anyway... Nealius
+1000. A tanker orbiting the carrier as it moves should be fundamental functionality without lua scripting.
Fisherman82
Having SAR helo and tankers fly along and orbit above the carrier is a fundamental thing that everyone must be having problems to set up right now. It would be nice to get a comment from ED regarding what is planned for this. Or if anything is planned at all, I feel that it would be bizzare if these features would not be coming but that does not mean ED shares that opinion perhaps. As far as I know this has never been talked about with regards of features for the Supercarrier.
Danny_P
Again like others have said this is one of the many, many things that should just be a 'thing' in the editor. To be honest there really should just be mission editor 'module' (referencing how BI have implemented functions in their mission editor) or something similar that create a carrier battle group, and you define it's area of opperation and it deals with it all. In the meantime I highly recommend, again like others have, for you lot to have a look at MOOSE. Whilst it does require SOME input from the user, it only takes a short amount of time to understand at a high level.

Whilst it does require SOME input from the user, it only takes a short amount of time to understand at a high level. The SAR chopper is a fundamental part of carrier operations and should definitely be a part of the ME. As for MOOSE, I have been using a SAR script for some weeks now that has, up until now, been working flawlessly. Something weird happened after the last two recent updates. While all of my existing missions are still working, I can no longer create a new mission using the same scripts that I have been using all along. I thought that maybe the new update broke something, so I reverted back to 2.5.6.52437 but that didn't help. I still can't make a new mission and if I remove the helo from a previous mission, I can't put it back. The helo shows as "allies flights" in the mission briefing, but will not load in the game. I have done numerous "cleanup and repairs." No Joy. I sent a PM to FunkyFranky who authored this script and am still waiting to hear back.Roosevelt_Rescue_Helo.luadcs.log Edited August 27, 2020 by rayrayblues SLAVA UKRAINI MoBo - ASUS 990FX R2 Sabertooth, CPU - AMD FX 9590 @4.7Gb. rayrayblues
OK I caught that. I attached the wrong file, DUH. I haven't been loading moose twice. That was a one time thing. But you gotta believe me. I was doing everything right and no helo would load. and now it seems to be working again. I haven't done anything different. If I have done something different, I have no idea what it was. I've been pulling my hair out for days and now all of a sudden it's working again. It's kinda like when your car is making a funny noise, but when you take it to the mechanic, it stops. As soon as I called you, it started working again. I'm gonna be scratching my head for some time trying to figure out what happened. I need a drink I have successfully loaded all three US carriers, the Kuznetsov and the Tarawa. Thank you so much for your help. I have a lot to learn. SLAVA UKRAINI MoBo - ASUS 990FX R2 Sabertooth, CPU - AMD FX 9590 @4.7Gb.
