Radio presets - usage poll and possible bug

Recommended Posts

Two convos at once:

A) does anyone use A-10 presets? They sounds good on paper but Ive always found it fast enough to manually tune. Howver a few recent missions Ive had frequency collisions and presets might be helpful.

B). I suspect this is something basic and obvious to most, but I don’t know how these work. Here are my steps:

Tuning vhf-fm and using the “out if band” tone to see if its working.

Vhf-fm: tr, man. Tune 80mhz.

Preset dial to 01, press load. Assume 80Mhz has been loaded to preset 1.

Tune 90 mhz, hear tone. Preset dial to 02, press load. Assume 90mhz has been loaded to preset 2.

Mode:pre, preset dial to 1. Expect: radio tuned to 80 and hence tone should stop, but it doesnt. Why?

Okay, thats valuable to know it can and should work. Im going to disable some exports and try testing some more.

I am 99% sure this is a dcs-bios issue. Changing the preset in game/pit works as expected, but issuing the dcs-bios command to change preset changes preset but also sets the frequency to some fixed value. I am now working on debugging dcs-bios.

  • 2 weeks later...

Just following up in case anyone cares: this ended up being a bug within dcs-bios and a fix is being developed.

Ok, so with that dcs-bios fix, both vhf radios are perfect. Uhf consumes presets just fine, but I seem to be unable to update them. In man mode, I tune a uhf freq, set preset to the preset to update, press load. Then switch to preset mode and press status and it shows the old preset freq not the one I just tried to set.

I also found that I cannot use the mouse to activate squelch or press the “status” button, but keybinds for those do work.

Im using the takeoff instant action nevada mission.

Can someone please try to update a uhf preset and let me know if it works?

Im wondering if the mission defined uhf presets are not overwritable??

I'll give it a try later but IIRC I had no problem uploading custom presets in the pit using UHF, can't say the same with the VFH though but maybe I'm doing something wrong there...

I also found that I cannot use the mouse to activate squelch or press the “status” button, but keybinds for those do work.

In the virtual cockpit the activation point for the mouse pointer has shifted and is not over the "physical" button on the radio panel, I think there was a bug report about this but don't know if it has been acknowledged by ED.

If you try to hover the mouse in the vicinity of the squelch/status button you'll see it turning from a cross to the green option pointer and then you can press the buttons. Indeed key bindings work as intended ;)

Ah, Yes I think that method is working fine. I should also be able to set my own presets from the pit, but that appears to be bent for me.

  • ED Team

A few key points I want to consolidate for anyone reading this thread regarding the A-10C and radio presets.

1) The A-10C is one of the oldest modules in DCS and as was pointed out above cannot load radio presets directly within the Mission Editor (ME). However, the Ka-50 recently got updated and was given this capability, so I'm optimistic this will be added to the A-10C in the near future.

2) The VHF-AM radio can only tune freqs between 116.0 and 151.975 MHz, and the VHF-FM radio can only tune radio freqs from 30.000 and 76.000 MHz. The tone you hear when you try tuning a frequency "out-of-band" sounds because the radio is incapable of tuning to that frequency, such as 80 or 90 MHz. The reason for this is because the VHF radios use a mechanical display directly linked to the tuning knobs, so a pilot could physically turn the knobs to an out-of-band freq setting, but that doesn't mean that freq will work with that radio. Hence the tone.

3) In my experience the frequency window on the A-10C UHF control head and the identical one in the F-16 only show the MANUAL frequency setting, not the radio preset. So if I were to plug in 327.0 for Nellis Tower, and save it as Preset 01, but then change the manual freq window so it displays 251.0, as long as I have the radio in PRESET mode and the preset to CH 01, I can still talk to Nellis Tower. However, if I switch the radio to MANUAL mode, it will of course transmit on 251.0, or whatever is displayed in the MANUAL freq window. Not sure if this is intended behavior or not, but that's how it behaves for me.

4) For those that don't know how to load radio presets for the VHF-AM and VHF-FM via the Prepare Mission function within the ME:

Select FLIGHT>PREPARE MISSION via the drop-down menu in the Mission Editor, after which it will load the mission for you to fly. Turn on the battery and inverter for the A-10C, start the APU, switch on the APU Generator. This will allow power to go to the VHF-AM and VHF-FM radios (only the UHF radio is powered off the battery). Load all the presets you want for the mission into the VHF-AM and VHF-FM radios, and then exit the mission and save it within the mission editor. Those presets are now associated with that specific mission (.miz) file. Now anyone that climbs into an A-10C in that particular mission will have those radios pre-loaded.

5) I haven't been able to get the UHF radio presets to save themselves via the PREPARE MISSION function for some reason. However I just opened up the .miz file via 7-Zip Open Archive, and manually edited the UHF SETTINGS.lua file manually. You can do this with the VHF radios as well, since it is faster, however first you will need to do the PREPARE MISSION command to generate these files within the .miz file itself, even if you don't save any freqs within the cockpit as explained above.

Afterburners are for wussies...hang around the battlefield and dodge tracers like a man.

Good consolidation Raptor9.

In response to 3, there is a "status" button on the UHF radio, and when depressed the display will show the preset frequency for approximately 5 seconds. The up front UFC repeater also shows the preset freq.

Thus, 5 confirms my issue. If you use the status button you'll notice that the frequencies aren't even getting saved, so it follows that they won't be updated after the prepare mission function.

It’s currently bugged. Reported.

Ok great. I had just reposted under the bugs section. I didn’t mean to be too noisy about it just ensuring the right eyes got on it. Cheers.

Only the status button is currently broken/reported.

Saving presets works as it always has. Just did a quick test om OB to confirm this.

Hmmmm. I’ll test again with the latest OB in case it snuck in there, and if it doesn’t work Ill bring back specific steps to compare procedures. Thanks.

Regarding the status button, I suspect its a similar issue but the squelch switch is also not clickable, but using the test switch seems to act as squelch.

Issue is resolved thanks to another user. Unlike vhf heads, uhf head requires that you are in preset mode when saving frequencies. In my head it would save the “active” frequency so I was switching to manual before trying to save.
