Just about to place an order for 8700k but trying to decide which MB and cooler. Current options:

MB:
ASRock Pro4
ASRock Extreme4
ASRock Fatal1ty Gaming K6
Asus ROG Strix H

Coolers:
Noctura NH-15s
NZXT Kraken X52

Controllers: TrackIR 5, Thrustmaster HOTAS X, Saitek Throttle Quadrant (with DIY removable collective mod), Saitek Pro Flight Rudder Pedals.

Just trying to keep my number of takeoffs and landings equal!

Get a good gaming MB, I posted a quick VR test HERE, after seeing all these VR threads popping up, of the performance I'm getting with only a 1070, I believe spending the extra on the MB has help with the overall performance of my rig and it's seems to be easier to gain OC MHz.

The Noctua is a beast for air coolers, no bad choice.

Te kraken is nice too, but I would have a look at HardOCP's website for the cooler reviews, the Kraken is among the best but you might find another one that fits even better, some Corsairs are real nice too for AIO.

Actually, cpu-block + radiator + pump + tube = DIY and not so much more, but way better in the long run. YOu might wanna think about that one. We can assist you in picking the right parts. It starts with a good block...

I would now buy 2x16 or 2x8 but not a 4-ship RAM config if you wanna go fast and fat with RAM. Many still have probs using XMP on various ( even in QVL ) boards.

I would pick a Gigabyte, my Asus hates my RAM, I have heard much better things of Gigabyte's Z370 solutions meanwhile. Might be an option for you.

Asrock might be ok, I personally avoid them.

I have decided to go the Noctura in the hope that it will man enough for 5GHz without delidding. I prefer air coolers as they are low risk and low maintenance. I will be going for 2x8gb 3200MHz DDR4 RAM as I can't afford 2x16GB right and will upgrade later once DCS (or star citizen) become RAM hungry.

Thanks for all the help.

Noctua are excellent. But, i think Thermalright are the best. Some of them have a TDP of 320w. Prolimatech are also excellent.

Don't buy the Strix H model. Its very badly supplied with I/O both mid board and rear I/O and suffers from a coil whine

Cib, I have decided to go with the ASRock Extreme4 as it has pretty everything I need, the only thing the Fatal1ty K6 has over it is the ability to overclock an external base clock.

Its idling here at 23C and tops out around 71C. Highest its been is 81C and for this I blame the old arctic silver I was forced to use as I had run out of Kryonaught which dropped top temps to around the 65C mark @100% load. I need a new tube
