Merlin engine sound

Recommended Posts

Can anyone tell me why to this day the devs have not fixed the P-51 Engine sound ? they go they claim to all this detail on this plane and the Spitfire and both still sound like lawnmowers , how hard would it be ? there are plenty of these birds still around to copy the correct sounds , and NO I don't want to have to resort to a sound mod for this , we shouldn't have too .

I don't know what to say, I can't believe that IF the sound in DCS was really more like a lawnmower, that a man, that owns and operates these very aircraft (and Eagle Dynamics) would allow the representation to be so wrong.

Sound is a very personal thing, it is also easily destroyed over video and recordings. It can be distorted and ruined by different devices, effects, etc.

Have you ever heard a Merlin in real life? Are you comparing to that, or to a YouTube video? Do you expect real-world sounds, or Hollywood, or an old game that has conditioned your feelings now?

If you guys would like me to ask Nick again about the sounds I can, but I can't see him being disappointed in them, and not having the team address it.

Okay, so what I'm going to ask might be a stretch...but...

Ask him to compare the default sounds for the Mustang in-game, versus Jafa's P-51D Merlin sounds.

(And maybe also default Spit versus Jafa's Spit).

The ED team had total access to an actual Spitfire to record sounds from, I feel the sounds are great, I don't care for any sounds mods I have heard to be honest, probably because I know the guys were standing right next to and sitting inside the real deal to record them.

and yet, when u open the original soundfiles from the dcs recordings, they actual do sound very good...but in game, they sound for some reason very different, and imo, not so good anymore. it seems the dcs sound engine is distorting the files unfortunately, and i think thats also why some people compare the sounds with lawnmowers and what not.

thats not Merlin specific, but applies to the german engines as well, and i assume to all sounds in dcs.

And yet I have never opened the original files, I only listen to the Spitfire in game, and am very happy with it, obviously there are a lot of guys that have never been around either a Merlin or a lawnmower, I suggest if you prefer the sound mods, keep using them, but the ED team, including an owner/operator of Spitfires and more, is quite happy with the sounds the recorded directly from a Spitfire and P-51.

Many people who've never flown in a real Merlin powered aircraft seem to be under the misapprehension that it sounds as sonorous inside as out.

It doesn't.

Jafas sound mod, whilst a joy to the ears and a great piece of work is more a theatrical interpretation and sounds far more flamboyant than inside the actual aircraft.

i never said im using any soundmods...in fact, im using vanilla dcs all the way. no mods at all.

im just saying, that the soundfiles themselves sound better than they do in game.

and yeah, i have been next to both, a Merlin and a lawnmower, not at the same time though

Whether you use sound mods or not, that is the answer, if you dont like ED's sounds, you can mod them yourself, we are happy with what we have, and while there may always be improvements to the sound engine, etc. No changes planned for the Merlin sounds, as much as I am sure Yo-Yo and the team would like the excuse to hang out with the Mustang and Spit, there is no need to right now.

I will just say this last Duxford Flying Legends (and it was four years since the last time I attended) I was very gladly impressed by how close to the game do sound Spits and Stangs flying-by over my head and taxiing in front of me. It's that, no question.

Mods on the other hand can "sound better", definitely they can, in the meaning they seek for some kind of "Hollywood like" effects, and it does sound good, I know they do specially the ones made by expert hands. It sounds good doesn't mean they are real though and people tend to forget DCS is about realism not good looking-sounding.

Anyhow I used to be a professional musician BTW, my listening may be not yours .

I can only add that btd, our sound engineer and music creator, is a constant guest at Flying Legends, so he knows exactly from the first hands, how the engines sound - from several meters distance to kilometers.

I just had a listen to these wave files and they indeed sound a whole lot better when played back than how they are sounding in DCS itself.

Having all the right tools doesn't make you a good car mechanic

Cheers

Jafa

So your approach to promoting your sounds is an insult to the devs? Interesting approach...

it's not just the tools, its access to the real aircraft and people that own, operate and fly these very aircraft... so they have more than just the right tools.

Let me point out as well if you want to talk about sounds, and you think they can be better, comparing them to a lawnmower, or insulting the people recording and creating these tools can just stop now.

As I pointed out above, if you don't like ED's sounds, there are plenty of fantasy sound packs out there that you might prefer.

While I understand your stance and agree with you, NineLine, calling the mods "fantasy sound packs" is also a bit a blow below the belt.

There is a clear discrepancy between the raw sound files and how we hear them in the sim. So I am happy this was brought up and I hope it will get attention or at least an open dialogue.

In my own opinion, the F/A-18C for instance sounds superb in DCS. That tells me they're on the right track for sure.

I don't know, most computer sound systems, have questionable sound quality. I hooked up my computer to my Macke PA.... then loaded DCS and flew my P-51 and Spit and Dora and 109. besides my neighbors' thinking the BoB was going on in my house, the sound was incredible! individual computer systems may have a lot to do with some players reaction. just a guess though. My 16in Peavey loud speakers may have something to do with it, also. I know it is 2 extremes, but showed the difference in speakers and sound systems make a huge difference.

Well for reference, please look at the quote in my post as well, if someone wants to insult ED's sound making abilities, while basing their sounds on, I'm not sure what? Did they record a Spitfire in the manner ED did? Are they just taking ED's own sound files and altering them? Are they taking the sounds from elsewhere and altering them? That actually opens a lot of questions on the legality of them distributing these mods, but lets ignore that for now...

The point is, these mods are fantasy based on what the user who made the mod thinks they should sound like, so more fantasy/hollywood/etc... I stand by that. Instead ED makes the effort to record the real sounds, and then try to build an ingame sound engine to best deliver these, we have seen even more improvements on the F/A-18 sounds, which shows ED is still evolving...

But again, if you want to take shots at ED, describing it as a lawnmower, or that they are bad mechanics with the right tools... then we arent going to get anywhere here.

The only person that is doing any insulting round here is you , am I to understand that only ED has the capability's and the talent to create authentic representational audio ? that all our 3rd party efforts are shadows in comparison even though they are largely done for passion and No financial gain ? , that I and the likes of Tiger and others haven't got a clue what were doing ?

"Having all the right tools doesn't make you a good car mechanic" is not insult-its a FACT and it goes for anyone and everything including myself.

Oh and by the way I have 20 plus years working in aviation and 10 plus years creating aviation sound files and all the right tools for the job.

I explained it wasn't an insult (fantasy in that they are tweaked from reality to something else, I feel ED's is reality, I am sure opinions will differ), but I suppose you can take it as such, as I took your statement, I won't let this turn into a pissing match though, so I am closing this, if you have more to say on it, feel free to PM me, but ED isn't adapting any sound mods at this time. That isn't insulting anyone's work, so don't get all stressed, ED is happy with their sounds, if you like a mod, use it.

PS stating ED has the right tools, and that wouldn't make them a good mechanic is an insult.
