1080 to 2080, does it worth?

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

I am looking for your thoughts about a decision I’m about to make. I have a pretty nice rig with a 1080 installed. It runs nicely at 4k (32in monitor+TIR) and I’m happy with it so far, but I think it can run smoother.

The main problem is that it is hard to find a 2080TI and the price is around 1400USD when we find it. I was thinking about upgrading to a 2080, because of the price is around 800˜900USD.

Do you think 1080 to 2080 worths it or do you think I should go for a 2080TI paying around 1400usd?

I really appreciate your thoughts. Tks in advance.

All the best,

Sydy

From all these test it's around 25 to 30% better at 4K.

Not sure what DCS would be? I'm guessing you should wait to see someone post some results.

Then again, how much can you get a 1080ti? It's not that far off at 4K....

For now, (without DLSS option, or RTX option) for DCS, the 2080ti is about 5% better than a 1080ti ... (on my PC for VR use)

Maybe yes when DLSS will be added.

I've just gone from a 1070 to a 2080, and it has been about 50% improvement, so the 25-30% mentioned above sounds about right. In DCS I am still on quite low cpu/gpu usage, as the game engine can't make use of all the available power at this time. It did however get me over the magic 45fps in VR, so I'm generally pleased with the difference. My honest opinion is that if I had a 1080 I probably wouldn't have done it, as it is a lot of money for a fairly modest performance boost.

If we get Vulkan/DLSS down the line it might be a different story however.

Thinking about upgrading my 1070 to a 2080, I have a similar system to yours, John, but my CPU is much older - i7-4790K. Only playing in VR, so interested to know if my CPU will limit the full potential of the 2080. In the past, upgrading from a 970 to a 1070 was worth it.

I have the same 4790k OC to 4.6ghz @1.25v. My cpu usage in DCS is just over 20% while playing in VR with a 1070 OC. The 4790K can handle the 2080ti w/o breaking a sweat, it could handle two in sli if needed running at 4k. The issue is the software and optimisation. I`m looking to upgrade but may go for the 1080ti over the 2080 due to the 11 v 8 gb of vram and higher cuda core count. I notice DCS using all of the 8gb vram on my 1070. If you run out of vram it more or less kills performance dead regardless of the GPU power. 12gb vram should have been the standard for the 2080 and 2080ti at today's prices.

Guys,

Send it all to hell and just bought a 2080 AMP... the TIs are costing 2200usd. 2080 are at 830usd range...

As they say YOLO - You Only Live Once!

Tks,

Sydy

1080ti is still half the cost of a 2080, aparently with similar performance. I guess the answer depends on 1) use with other games (dlss enabled) and 2) available $. I had neither and very happy with the 1080ti for now, and hopefully another year or two. Congratz on the purchase, the result will be good regardless.

Hi joca,

If I had a 108Ti I wouldn't upgrade at this moment. I got a good deal (quite fair, I'd say) on my 1080 (300 bucks), so my upgrade will cost me 540Usd in the end and I will be future ready.

The 2080 has a pretty similar performance if compared to a 1080ti, but it is 20-30%ish better than my 1080, so, I'll give it a go.

I will post the results in a month.

All the best,

Sydy

What do you mean by future ready? DLSS? It might be useful, but it might not be supported by DCSW..

And without it, IMHO it would be better to add a bit more to the amount you've got for the 1080 and upgrade to a used 1080Ti which gives you the same performance levels as 2080.

If only ED use the DLSS, then the RTX1080 has an obvious advantage over GTX1080TI.

guys there's no need to update from a 1070 to a 2080ti, in 2D there are zero differences between the 2.......

why pay extra for a DLSS card when you can’t use it for anything? and might not be able to use it for anything next year either?

It buys you a raffle ticket for the DLSS/RTX prize draw; maybe you win, maybe you don't.

The RTX cards also have the new USB-C video output for next gen VR headsets, so if they appear during the lifespan of the card then you are good too. Or maybe none of that will happen, who knows cry.gif

EVERY reviews shows improvements *IF* you use 4K. So if you're using 1920x1080, I'm sure you'll see very little benefit due to other bottlenecks.

Fact is, if you run TiR you are forced to either get locked at 60fps or have the power to lift yourself up to 120fps or more, but not 1 frame below.

The 2080ti got some juice, but not enough to give me 120fps at QHD with the same LOD.

I have the option, either 2080ti or a new iPhone. I think I take the iPhone.
