1060 verus RX480

I generally run DCS with Helios so my 2 screens are 3840x1080. I am considering getting a MSI GAMING GeForce GTX 1060 6GB GDDR5 DirectX 12 VR Ready (GeForce GTX 1060 GAMING X 6G) for $255, but would like to know if anyone has experience with the RX480 in DCS running Helios? My system is getting old and I don't believe buying a 1070 or 1080 will help me that much more.

If your CPU is a 2500K you can overclock it to 4.2-4.3 GHz quite easily (just add a good cooler if you don't have already), and then it should be able pull a GTX 1070 or even a GTX 1080 without problems.

Add 8 GB RAM and put a your Windows and DCS on an SSD and you will suddenly have a system that can pass you over a few years still. :)

I cannot figure out how to update my list of eqt, but I did increase my ram to 16GB and DCS 2.0 is on an SSD, but 1.5 is still on a regular HD.

Can't comment on Helios but my MSI RX480 8GB Gaming X runs 1440p in DCS just fine. I'm CPU bottlecked in both 2.0 and 1.5. The overall system is i5-4690, rx480 8gb, 16gb ddr3 and win10. This is higher settings but not max.

Just a FYI, the Radeon RX580 has just been released.

The 580 is basically just an overclocked 480 though. Nothing wrong with that of course, I'm very pleased with my 480 but i is worth noting.

the 480 bios can be updated to 580... for real...

the issue is the Polaris 10 14nmFinFET Chips would likely have issues with the new clocks and Voltages of the Polaris 20 14nmEPE Chips.

Overclockers and modders have flashed 480s to 580s, but what you're not seeing in the articles about it, a lot of users are having their cards burn up.

So if you flash, be very careful, the chips arent just re-brands, they are a different mfr process and some small things were shifted in the die shot to help w/ performance.

Why did you choose a 1060 over a 580? and for you sake i hope you bought the real 1060 and not the joke of a 3gb card.

tests that I reviewed show the 2 cards about equal and with my old computer, I didn't think spending an additional $50 was worth it for the 580. The high end 580s are in short supply and the the 1060 was really all I needed for my computer and I saved about $50 on Amazon. Yes I bought the 6 GB MSI gaming x.

Some of us are getting stutters in DCS with the 1060 6G. Hope you won't be one of them. Wish I wasn't.

Just FYI I've been considering the same thing. Most benchmarks show the 1060 6GB performing better than the 580 8GB and also cost slightly less. I don't think that 2GB will make much difference however if you use high resolution or multiple monitors, the 3GB/4GB options may may not provide you with much future-proofing. Especially if you like to use high texture detail.

I got the 6 GB version and so far no issues using Helios.

I have a 1060 6GB, can't remember which make as its not one I normally use, but it was the cheapest of its type I could find and it has just blown me away with how good it is in DCS (both), P3Dv3 and BoS.

Far better than the 970 G1 Gaming I had before.

I use it in VR and the difference is stunning, with aminor cpu upgrade included , i5 2500k to 4690k

With my 2500k I had no issues with DCSWon 3 HD monitors and exporting MFDs, radios and RWR to a 4th.

Cpu was at 4.3GHz with a Freezer Pro fan. Ran that way for years with no complaints. 1.5 on SSD and 2 on SATA.

I'm sure you won't regret your purchase.
