GTX 1060 or 1070?

Recommended Posts

So i'll be upgrading my flight rig at some point in the future and would likely go with either the GTX1060 or 1070. How's the 1060 currently holding up in 2.0? at the moment i'm only flying in 1.5 however would like my rig to be good enough for when 2.5 is released soon™.

the GTX1060 is obviously cheaper and would prefer to go with this however would it be recommended to go a 1070 instead? keeping in mind that the primary use of this computer is for flight sims as i have a laptop that i take around with me while i travel which is technically my "main computer" for day to day stuff and gaming, it's just not great with DCS, it's not bad, but it's not great.

I play at 1080p, no plans to ever go to VR and not planning on moving up to 1440p or 4k any time soon

Take a look at my post in the thread linked below for some information. It is generally recommended that you get the best GPU you can afford. You will notice a significant difference between a 1060 and 1070. Getting the 1070 will allow for higher settings and better performance with 1080p.

GTX 1060 6GB is all you need for playing at 1080p.

Just make sure to get the 6GB and not the 3GB version!

Not in 2.1. My 1070 easily runs at 100% usage with i5-7600k @ 4.7GHz.

OP, I'd re-evaluate at upgrade-time what is the fastest GPU available for the budget, get that one.

1060 (6GB) gives me on 4K a nice 55-60FPS. All maxed out except disabled the bokeh effect and AA (no need to alias anything on 4K).

With VR that same settings with 1.5 pixel density gives only a 22-24FPS, so dropping shadows off and some other things kicks it up to 35-45 so it does well as long all extra FPS renderings are disabled.

On 1080p?

Hard to believe that. Unless it's REALLY poorly optimized.

I can't speak for the 1070 but when I had the 1060 6GB in 2.1, I was seeing 100% GPU usage with 1080p.

... however would like my rig to be good enough for when 2.5 is released soon™.

Since your upgrade is scheduled for an indeterminate time in the future and you want it to be good enough for a product with, as yet, unknowm hardware requirements (v2.x is not stable enough to predict what it will end up needing), I would wait until v2.5 is out.

On 1080p?

Hard to believe that. Unless it's REALLY poorly optimized.

Well, it kind of is, especially Normandy map, at least for now, in its early stage of post-release development. Noticeably worse performer than Nevada, though that was expected, I guess.

I don't buy the maxed-out 55-60 fps @ 4k with 1060 fairy-tale above. Unless flying only over clear-sky Nevada, less-populated parts of it and only with handful of units around, then sure, it's doable. But that's hardly an achievement - any modern card will pull well above 100+ fps at lower resolutions in that scenario.

On the other hand, my aim is never to drop below 55-60 minimum, preferably stutter-free, with trees/cities below, clouds above and something flying around. That's much harder for any hardware an in 2.1.1 my 1070 + CPU @ 4.4 GHz are just barely good enough for that @ 1200p, at default "high" preset, with in-game AA & AF off (some enabled via extrenal apps).

Also both maps eat VRAM like candy and the more you've got the better - 6 gigs is already not enough for very heavy missions and doesn't give you much room for the future.

Keep in mind, that reworked Caucasus is most likely going to be much more demanding than its current rendition as well.

All and all, as Cichlidfan noted, it just generally not a good time to upgrade with strictly DCS in mind - 2.1.x is in very bumpy and rough stage of development & optimization, prices of NVidia cards are still stupid with all the mining craze, ATI cards are still not quite the best machinery for this sim yet, and God only knows when 2.5 will be out and how it will perfom in (inevitable) Pre-Early-Whatever-Alpha stage.

I get 120fps in 2.1 on high settings with a 1060.

joking right? how many 1060's are you using? i get 20-40 fps with 970 gtx over las vegas city with medium settings.

Depends on the part of the map, altitude and resolution. 1080p, high in the sky away from the city should be absolutelly possible. I get similar numbers with 1070 but in 3440x1444 provided that I'm high, far from the city. Low in Las Vegas can drop down to 40.

The thing however is that there are some big issues with Nevada and the distant objects use a really low resolution textures as also most of the objects are not being diplayed.

I didn't buy the desert. I'm talking about Normandy.

What does a 970 have to do with a 1060? The rest of the system probably matters more than the GPU.

I have a 1060 6GB (non oc)and a 4K TV. Mostly I´m flying online, sometimes a small dogfight over Vegas. I´m statisfied with the card.

My settings:

Textures + Terrain Textures high

Water high

Traffic off

Visual Range ultra

Heat Blur low

Shadows low

MSAA off (4K)

Gras 250

Trees 12500

Preload 150000

Anisotropic 16x

Mirrows off (at least when flying low)
