Muzzle Flare in 2.1

The muzzle flare in 2.1 is making taking an accurate shot very hard. The entire sight gets filled with the flash currently.

I think he refers to new muzzle flash effect for all aircraft in the sim, where instead of individual flashes roughly corresponding to weapon's rate of fire (1.5.6 & 2.0.5) we've got a constant "flamethrower-style" animation, which:

a) might be excellent for modern gatling and electric-operated guns, but;

b) doesn't make any sense whatsoever for WWII guns (with ROF of up to 800 rounds per minute) and mostly affects both German planes with cowling mounted MGs - the flash texture pretty much obstructs the whole gunsight.

The problem has been mentioned several times already since the first Normandy previews and I feel it's going to be noticed more often now when more customers can fly the new version.

My bad, I honestly havent been firing guns much lately, been busy staring at the ground and if I did fire the guns it was at a distance (I'd asked for better visibility at a distance). SO now that I have had a better look, they look not really good. Gonna go through all the WWII planes and see whats up.

This is what I am seeing. Could be something that needs tweaking with the lighting too.

PS its on the list to be looked at.

Have to agree there, that its too much. Just imagine what it will be like, when in lower light. Im guessing the muzzle flashes are emissive, so they will become mega visible when in low light conditions.

Thanks. It seems to be the same effect used for most, if not all planes in 2.1. One could turn the blind eye on it for some "alpha" period of time (from accuracy point of view) if one flies planes with wing mounted guns only, as they will "only" look incorrect but not affect the gameplay itself.

For guys flying mostly German planes, however, it will be more pressing issue.

Ideally, we should have different animation for daytime and nighttime firing, as muzzle flash visibility is quite different in these situations, but if DCS' gfx engine doesn't support such functionality, then at least some transparency compromise tweak is going to be necessary.

It looks quite 'cookie cutter' right at the moment, I am collecting info to make a nice informed bug report on it.

I have posted about this a few weeks ago already. I cant believe noone noticed anything, as pretty much all people I have talked to during the pre release phase mentioned it nearly first thing seeing the video. Also all the sprites are way forward of the muzzle end of the guns from outside view.

Yup. And it's also present in the Bf 109 now, too.

Just make the flames like 60% smaller and it's all good. You still get a nice effect and you get to see through the sight too. With that said I have to say I didn't really notice a problem in the 109, I rarely however hold my finger for more than a split second on the trigger. By the time you fire you already usually have to line up for another shot, or pull away.

When you look the 109 now on the Normandy Map the Muzzle Flash is complete out of Place sitting ca. 50 cm in Front of the Guns, thats why you dont notice this compare to the 190.

In the P-51 Video you can see barley the Flames when the Plane is on the Ground...

Once you have tasted Flight, you will forever walk the Earth with your Eyes turned Skyward.

Do you use any kind of Reshade/SweetFX ? The question concern that terrain looks very realistic.

i also feel a little "ambivalent" about the muzzleflash .... i dont know what it was like back in the times, but i dont think that german engineers planned it like that ;)

in this video you can see some moving pictures of what the muzzleflashs are like while fighting....

@sithspawn ... hope that helps
