VULCAN FORGE MISSION 1 - JUMPING THE GUN

Operation VULCAN FORGE kicked off yesterday when the US Marine Expeditionary Unit landed at Creech. VMA-231 squadron is getting its feet on the ground and a feel for the area. The plan is to push north over the next weeks and push ISIS out of Northern Iraq and Kurdistan.

Today's mission is to fly close air support for a resupply convoy heading to the Yucca Airstrip.

Scene Northern Iraq 2017

Operation VULCAN FORGE kicked off yesterday when the US Marine Expeditionary Unit landed at Creech. VMA-231 squadron is getting its feet on the ground and a feel for the area. The plan is to push north over the next weeks and push ISIS out of Northern Iraq and Kurdistan. The Marines will be working with the Iraqi Army, Air Force and National Police to retake the land. CIA / JSOC units will link up with Pesh Merga forces in the north to wage guerrilla warfare in order to degrade ISIS capabilities. The Marine air component's mission is to support the ground forces in this undertaking.

Aiding us in this endeavour will be a small but effective component of Canada’s JTF2, who will be patrolling the AOR, setting up ambushes and connecting with friendly militia forces. We look forward to working with this elite group of Special Forces, and await eagerly the arrival of 6 F/A-18s to complement our ground attack and CAS aircraft.

Political considerations have precluding the US Air Force from basing in the forward area we will be working in. The White House does not want to inflame relations with the Russians, and have agreed not to base any cutting edge fighters or bombers up in the Northern part of the country. We will be out here alone for the foreseeable future.

The squadron is still in the process of getting set up in the AOR, and our supply and security situation is still in shambles. We have a large assortment of bombs and rockets, but the fancier munitions are still on the way over from Kuwait and the UAE. Our first missions will be lacking in PGMs and Mavericks, but we’re Marines – we will make do!

ISIS controlled Syria is R4808A and areas to the north and East. We are to stay clear of Syrian airspace, unless directed by command to cross. Be aware of your surroundings, and do not fly into Syrian airspace! The Russians, and the Syrians still lay claim to Syrian airspace, and may engage you if you violate it.

Keep your head up, be flexible, be lethal and the best you can be!

MISSION 1 - JUMPING THE GUN

Last night, without consultation, CIA / JSOC teams swooped and took the Yucca Airstrip. Problem is, they have no supplies and are out on their own. Marine Corp / Iraqi army convoy was sent in at first light to resupply the airstrip, but ISIS forces have not totally cleared out yet.

A Marine/Iraqi convoy is halted a few miles south of an ISIS roadblock consisting of a BTR and dismounts. VMA-231 is tasked is to destroy outpost, then escort convoy to Yucca Airstrip. We will launch and provide this convoy, callsign TRUCKER6, with Close Air Support as needed. The ISIS outpost is located at Waypoint 2. You will launch at first light, and make contact with the area control, callsign ARCHIBALD who will direct you from there.

Do not cross into Syrian airspace, and keep a listen to GUARD frequency. We are still trying to coordinate our operations with the Syrians and Russians, but as we all know, mistakes can be made in such a complex environment. Do not engage any Russian or Syrian assets unless they commit a hostile act towards you or our allies.

SIMULATION NOTES

This is a highly scripted mission, which means you have to follow certain instructions to make the triggers work properly. They are:

1. Use the RADIO MENU / F10 Option to request taxi. Follow taxi instructions to runway 26. All radio frequency changes are scripted. You do not have to change your radio settings to make it work.

2. On departure, fly direct to WEST1, which is Waypoint 1. Contact Archibald when prompted.

3. Follow Archibald’s instructions.

4. The overhead Reaper UAV will provide laser designation. If you wish to make use of this, use the LST mode and search for laser code 1111.

5. When recovering, you must fly the overhead pattern as instructed.

6. Do not take off or land on the taxiways! You must take off and land on the runway at all times. V/STOL is fine, but you must do it from the runways as cleared by ATC.

WAYPOINTS

1. WEST1

2. ISIS ROAD OUTPOST

3. YUCCA AIRSTRIP

4. NORTH1

5. EAST1

6. SOUTH1

7. NORTH LAS VEGAS AIRPORT

8. CREECH AFB

THREATS

Be aware, ISIS militas have obtained a wide assortment of captured Iraqi and Syrian weaponry. These include tanks, APCs, AA, MANPADS and a wide assortment of Radar and IR Guided SAM systems. We have received intelligence that indicates they may also be flying looted Iraqi fixed and rotary winged aircraft, including SU-25, MiG-21 and Hind attack helicopters.

MISSION BUILDING NOTES

I hope you enjoy flying this mission... I literally worked countless hours on it, and do appreciate feedback! (if it's negative, be nice:) . Please don't modify the mission in any way.

Very cool mission.

Only difficulty I had was my wingman ramming into me while during taxi to runway 26 for takeoff. I stopped at the end of the runway to prepare for takeoff and he ended up rear ending me and totalling his plane.

Other than that, maybe add the waypoint number in brackets to the text for the radio dialog like North 1 (waypoint 4).

Really cool though! Thanks for putting in all that hard work.

I've noticed that the AI Harriers want to all be on the runway before Lead powers up for departure. Perhaps just pull up to or just beyond the piano keys to make room for your wingman / flight?

Hey exray, I've updated the mission to add the waypoint numbers as you suggested.

I'm not sure what to do about the wing man issue, they seem to do their own thing. For now I suggest taking off right away and having them just catch up. He should catch up by the time you get a little beyond way point 1.

Thanks very much, Glyn!

And just a heads up, I'm fairly far along with my Vulcan Forge Campaign. I've got the first 7 missions fully complete, and plan to make 3 more.

Right now my plan is to try and get them all finished before 2.5 is released. Once I've got the new version, I'll test all the missions and make sure they're working properly, then I'll release them.

I've put a lot of work into these, and you'll find each one is much more complex than this first one.. I've even make a VULCAN FORGE campaign patch! :-)

Here's a couple images...

Nice ! Have to try your work. I love immersive campaigns like those made by Baltic Dragon and Ranger79.

Edit : nice mission very immersive with the radio language. But got damaged by a final manpad even I got the group destroyed. I finished the flight and landed (hard way) but didnt get the last messages once on the ground, like if the flag 305 hasnt been turned on even if I left the runway in the area 3. So only got 50 result points.

Thanks for the tip, Zarma! I've made some changes to the triggers and zones, so that landing bug should be fixed. As to other issue, I fixed that, too! Version 1.31 now online, thanks for your feedback!

It's funny, as I've gotten more experience with mission building, I've learned so much! I came back to this one to edit/fly it and it seems so different than the stuff I'm currently doing. :-) I think you'll like the newer missions.
