PointCTRL - Finger Mounted VR Controller

Recommended Posts

@ FoxDelta, Is your Rift still reporting as a second monitor with the expanded desktop?

@LuckyHendrix, Nothing else is required, However I just received some charging and battery monitors, which I highly recommend, and will be putting on the optional list for around 12.00usd. Sorry for not being responsive to PMs yesterday, I am trying to get the update and videos out.

@Cordite. I should have your spares put together by the end of the weekend. What ever anyone in this forum needs I will do my best to accommodate. In the case of spare batteries though, My bulk shipment is delayed so shipping full inits for "The List" will take priority over spares, unless of course something is broken or has failed.

Thanks,

Miles

yes it is,haven t found out how to deactivate that, all the hints i found at the WWW didn t work. but i am still on it

But PCtrl is working perfectly, calibrated in windowed mode for me, no issues at all since u implemented the vertical calibration

just a sidemark: u should think about offering Pctrl with two LEFT FCUs, as im using it extensivly i now, despite being a righty and had have my mouse on the right till yet, i am using nearly 100percent only the left one remaining the right hand at the flightstick.

Hi,

OK so I got my PointCTRL devices Friday, and finally got them calibrated this morning (was busy doing work around the house.

It does help if you read and understand the instructions. Sequential means just that. One at a time and in order! Took me three times three #$%^ tires before I realized what I was doing wrong. I was expecting to see five numbered cursors on the screen.

Went back read the instructions a fourth time and there it was. One cursor at a time starting in the center.

Reading the instructions multiple times and Farmer Tom's post does help a lot. I haven't done the Edge Calibration yet (waiting for the next firmware and windowed mode) but can already tell it will make a large difference.

I also have not tried the ZOM function. Can someone tell me what this does and how it works. I currently have the VR Zoom function mapped to a button on my HOTAS. Is there an advantage to the PoointCTRL Zoom function.

Also, from what little testing I have done it appears that the VR re-center function has no impact on PointCTRL. Is that correct.

Now to go test more. :pilotfly:

Starting to roll out the instructional videos for the new firmware v071319 with the centered window. Let me know if it helps, and if this format is effective, I am adding in game video also.

Thanks,

Miles

Just to confirm, we do not have to go to Wide screen mode (Alt+Enter) now?

Correct, default view is centered with v071319, My webmaster, aka my son, will be back from NYC tomorrow and will have it up on pointctrl.com

You are correct. PointCTRL references where you are pointing in relation to the headset and body. so re-centering will not have any effect, pointing forward is always pointing forward.

You dont have to use the proximity zoom function, its an option. It should be in tomorrows videos. Basically you set the distance between the FCU and HMS to where you want to zoom in, and then zoom out. You can zoom in by putting your hand closer to your face, like holding binos. default is off. But by pressing FCU buttons 1 and 2 together, you can also zoom in.

Thanks for asking,

Miles

Great tutorial Miles! Seems simple enough to me, can’t wait to get my hands on it.

Question, I remember you mentioning that there is an increase in precision if you put DCS in full screen mode rather than windowed. Is this still the case or am I mis-remembering?

It wasn't so much an increase in precision as a way to keep from accidentally clicking the non VR part of your window. That would cause PC to lose focus in game requiring you to put the regular cursor back over the DCS window.

A word of advice on calibration and using PC in general - don't make it harder than it is and spend some time using it before you worry about getting it absolutely accurate with edge calibration and constantly trying to fine tune it.

Just use it for awhile. It will only take a day or so for you to get completely familiar with what it does and how AND what is important to you and what doesn't matter TO YOU. THEN go in and get the fine tuning and all done IF you feel you need to. If PC is doing everything you want it to then updating to each firmware version is unnecessary unlike something like DCS updates.

This isn't brain surgery and nobody is going to die. I guarantee that the first time you jump in the cockpit and start flipping switches, and then wonder why nothing is happening? Then you realize it is because you forgot to put or turn the finger pistols on - you will be hooked...

In my opinion this would be a LOT better if a SMALL neodymium magnet and a thin metal disk were used to mount the HMS (provided it could be done without affecting gyroscopic tracking) and wireless. Recharging could be done with a USB cable, which would be easy since with my idea the HMS would simply be mounted with a magnet and could be disconnected for easy recharging.

Though I find the tech exciting I really don't want yet another cord attaching my head to the PC. The VR units cable is bad enough. I think I will wait for version 2 and see if the tech gets refined a bit.

I do appreciate this "first generation" effort by the creator though and will continue to watch this product. I have no doubt many users will find great use with this product.

Yeah, the cable is a little weighty, maybe doubling the mass of my CV1. Also not the most convenient for room-scale games that I play as well.. However, with that said, it is pretty neat. Also there is no version 2 without a Version 1. :-)

I couldn't agree with this more. I have played around with it for about 30 minutes. I am waiting for the next firmware version for the windowed mode, so why the heck not. It will take some getting used to and "muscle memory". Right now I have to stop and think which button to press for "left mouser", "Right mouse" not to mention using the mouse wheel function. Also it is a little bit "where the hell is the cursor now". Also have to remember to turn them back on after the time out. You can go through all of this and determine what YOU want as mariner said.

Firmware update

Am I miss understanding how the firmware update works? Do you have to get it from the website? It's asking me for a password in order to dl it?

Password inbound, Sorry about that, it was supposed to be the packing slip and email. I will fix that.

I have a know bug that I spent the day trying to fix with the new firmware. I am just going to post it, as is. The bug is minor ans only appears when setting the cursor targets. The left cursor does not move as much as the right cursor when making small adjustments. It may not even be noticeable to most people, and has no effect on final calibration.

Rebooted PC, resolved.

I'm at step 13, where you point to confirm pointer placement and I'm stuck. 3 times I have gone through the calibration steps, and each time and step 13 the cursor is at my extreme left or top FOV of the cv1. I can barely see it and it doesn't appear to change its placement to the next placement. :helpsmilie:

Trying to do this on my phone, are you in the v171619 in center window? Were you able to reduce the width of the cursor targets to fit the CV1. I assume you downloaded the new PDF manual v071619

I know you might think this sounds daft but what if you disconnect 1 of the monitors and go through the procedure to see the end result. It will at least start pointing at maybe a stacked monitor issue just a thought.

Good old pc reboot solved the issue. I thought I rebooted after firmware update, but maybe I didn't. Either way it is resolved, sorry for the false alarm.
