PointCTRL - Finger Mounted VR Controller

Recommended Posts

If I get this correct.

I've been lurking this thread as I'm in no rush to jump on the VR 2.x yet. (did that with 1.x in the 90s)

PointControl seems amazing and we need guys like @MilesD to get us new inventions like this.

In VR, after you calibrate, you point your arm/hand and "click" with your thumb on a gadget on your finger. And you'll want to touch something on front of you, hence the boards.

What if that button where to be moved on a contraption like a glove on the point of your index finger. Now, that would be cool right?

Yes, as Rougue says, it's just to stop my finger kind of just hovering out in space. It helps me steady my 'shooting hand' ;) (thoughts of Blazing Saddles springs to mind). So the hovering cursor isn't quite so frantic.

I have only started messing with it but it feels I have more of a connection with the space i'm in now. If that makes sense?

Yes it does, thanks

I DMed you a few times about the new firmware providing a somewhat workable 2d solution. Lets try and discord voice when you get a few minutes, I would love to hear how you got things working on working on your big ass screen.

I want to understand, several of you put up the board so that your arm does not float int he air? Do you lean on it or do you want to feel something you push against?
Think of it like a drawing board and a felt tip pen. Much easier to write on a piece paper if it's on the board than if the paper is floating in the air. You don't push on the board, it's just there.

Got it, I have to see if I can create that. Sometimes what happens is that if I stretch out for a button I hit my stick. Miles told me to make the movement as if you are reaching for the button.

Today I stuck my thrustmaster Mfds to the board to see if it added to it. It didn't. I took them off.

I also have ply on my arm rests and starting up the the A10c feel very natural.

I'd like to do a split screen video of my hand movements next to the cockpit view to see how they interact. But my kids think I'm odd enough sitting in a chair surrounded by plywood with lunch box on my head. They'd really cringe with embarrassment if I put that on YouTube.

New VR Pointing Device

Got mine mounted up but geometry seems a bit off in VR. I can reach for the F-14 tailhook and my hand is still in midair.

I’ll do some more experimenting, but I’m not optimistic.

EDIT: Yep, angles all wrong. I’ve come to the conclusion this isn’t worth the effort, particularly with multiple airframes. More power to you if it works for you, though.

Hi Rogue sorry to hear it didn't work out for you! I know what you mean about the angles being wrong. Mine was working OK but I had noticed my RL 'cockpit' didn't align with the DCS one. (It was actually higher up than it should be.)

I thought by recalibrating I could improve it, but as usual things didn't go to plan and now my FCU's aren't working correctly. I reset everything, tried a five point calibration (which works fine) but when I exit out of the setup menu my cursors are flitting about all over the place and I no longer have any control of where I point.

Just came on to see if anyhone else had simmilar issues. Will try and jump on DISCORD to see if Miles is about to offer any advice!

*EDIT*

OK the reset works. If I reset, the FCU's are tracking properly again. However as soon as I run the setup and go through the 5 point calibration (which again runs through prefectly) I exit out and now my right FCR brings the cursor up on the left side of the aircraft and moves backwards (I move my hand left, the cursor goes right) and vice versa for the left FCU. Weird!

Hey RatCatcher,

Sounds like both FCUs may me visible during calibration, The new simpler procedure through voice assist you only have your left FCU active. Or you may be picking up stray IR bouncing off your board when you turn your head to align the cursor.

Catch me om discord and we can sort it.

Hey RatCatcher...Catch me om discord and we can sort it.Miles

And as promised, Miles sorted it! Looks like it was indeed IR interference. I had also been keeping the right FCU on, but down by my side, in future its safer to just switch off while calibrating!

As always a pleasure to catch up with you Miles, a true Gentleman and with great customer care!!!

Also pleased to report the 'board' or ViCE (Virtual in Cockpit Emulator), as I like to call it...:D, is again working great and adding a nice additional level of immersion for me.

Cheers!

I've found that the board is out of alignment if I haven’t quite got my vr position set exactly, after a few clicks resetting vr position, looking in the right direction I can get it constantly set up and board aligned.

Hey Guys,

I am hoping this is the final version of the calibrations software. The process has not changed. but I do hope it's clearer, and more methodical. The biggest challenge seemed to be getting the cursors in your HMDs FOV. This can also serve as a reference document for that.

I hope its not to much to take in all at once. I will probably make a custom knee-board again with the reference Pics.

As always feedback encouraged.

Miles

Hello,

How long does it take after you order to receive your FCU's? Also, is the total roughly $60 U.S.?

This sound like an interesting product you have here, very tempted to try. Look forward to your response.

Thanks

Would it not be possible to export the setting data to a file and import it again?

That way, people with different vr devices and a good calibration could provide some profiles for import. New users can import e.g. rifts.dat or reverb.dat and have an easy start. Later they can still optimize themselves.

Hey kaltokrei,

Good to hear from you again. That's a good idea, unfortunately, it would only work if they had the same monitor set-ups and resolutions. The original intent of the GUI was to be able to use pull down menus, to get you close. In the end, it was more difficult because of multi monitors and different resolutions.

I think the process is about as simple as it can be now. But I am sure there are improvements to the instructions and Voice that can be made.

I soon as get the feedback from last nights update I will refine things a bit more.

Thanks for the suggestion, and I'm looking forward to your feedback.

Firmware and GUI.Voice Assist updates are out on pointctrl.com

I updated the PDF instruction manual, but did not get a chance to document the new features below. We are back to production now after some extensive PointCTRL updates. I hope its easier to initially set up now, and the new button features are usefull to you guys.

Firmware Update info for v040620

The Joystick and Mouse HID had a conflict on a few systems. I had to go back to a Mouse and Keyboard HID.

The main feature of this update is you don't have to worry about accidently turning a switch when activating the IRLED with a button press when you happen to be pointing at a switch.

The FCUs are now mapped as extra key presses as follows

FCU Buttons 1 and 2 together = keyboard press and release of u

FCU Buttons 2 and 3 together = keyboard press and release of i

FCU Buttons 1 and 3 together = keyboard press and release of o

Aux Button Banks are now q,w,e,r,t, and y

Any controls currently mapped to these buttons will have to be remapped.

The Aux buttons on the headset will hold just like a keypress, but the FCU's only send a single press and release per press. Holding the 2 FCU buttons down will not hold the keypress down. I was running into conflicts sometimes with the mouse vs keypress codes. I have to put in some more code for complete deconfliction in all situations.

You can then bind those simple press and release u,i, and o to macros running in voice attack or any other macro software you use for more complex functions.

Thanks

Miles
