HP's Reverb VR Pro Headset

It depends. I don't think the average system will be able to use it for DCS. But it will set a new bar for the high end of the market (9x00/2080ti). The Index and the riftS will sell better because more people can run them in DCS with more sane hardware.

 

One interesting thing will be undersampling, which we've not seen a lot of in VR. It might be the case that DCS running at a SteamVR supersampling of 80% is still clearer than a Rift S or Odyssey Plus at 150%, while having very similar hardware needs.

 

Wags - when you do set the Reverb up, please try with a DCS Pixel Density of 1.0 and use the SteamVR settings 'Video' 'Enable custom resolution' to something like 210% (or whatever makes the per eye setting 2160x2160, on how SteamVR sees the Reverb base resolution). That will give you a proper view of how things look at the panel's native resolution (or close to it, SteamVR dimensions means there's some remapping).

 

Also, Win10 1903 currently reduces the render quality of WMR to half (from the default of 2.0) so you will have to roll back to 1809 if you use the newer version. Microsoft have acknowledged the bug and are working on a fix, but if you have 1903 then it won't look as good as it should (that goes for other WMR headsets too).

 

One of the things that is a problem from the HP Reverb as a general VR headset is how basic and awkward WMR is to use, and how many things are not set up correctly out of the box. It's frustrating as often the hardware is ok. The Index and the Rift S don't have this issues so much.

..is a little frustrating, as the maker didn't enabled the WMR reprojection, undersampled to a 1609x1576 per eye resolution (far under the native panel res), and then used the lower 60 Hz option to make it work. While that's not a terrible idea, it's a little unusual, in that a 90 / 45 fps reprojection split would be more common (with some reduction in DCS settings like MSAA) and more typical of what we'd use.

Perhaps with 90 You will see 50% so 45 fps. Reverb as I know will have 60/90.

Even a 2080ti won't be able to run it with high settings unless you remove shadows. But hopefully the VR improvements help out.

It doesn't precisely because it is enterprise. All reviews have noted a large sweet spot. If you have multiple users having them dick around with IPD every time doesn't make sense, just put it on and it works does. Don't like it, wait for the Acer Ojo.

The video shows a frame rate of ~60 (avg of 58 or something) with the GPU being at 47-mid 50% usage. So quite a bit of headroom. I recall the reviewer saying he had to turn things way down to get it to run at 90fps, and that it wasn't good and the 45fps ASW sucked. So he tried the 60 which worked fine and he could turn on a bunch of eye candy. He was also using 200% SS when doing that.

I thought this was the same guy on Reddit I talked to who told me he had to have everything on low in DCS to get 60fps. We will know soon enough when Wags tests it out.

Oh he initially had to turn shadows off to set other settings higher. But he said it was really tough to use the headset at 90hz because it required more power to get stable frames. But when he set to 60hz it played much nicer. Not sure what his steam SS was set to.

I think this guy might be different from the reddit guy I'm thinking of. Not sure if I see shadows in his shots either. I think he has them on terrain but not trees? Still one would think with 50% load on the card as shown in the monitor he should be able to turn stuff on.

I was just going to post ACG's review of it. He does mention DCS at 14min and says it's extremely good at the clarity of the dials and resolution. I dont think I watched the whole thing though and was curious what hardware his PC is running.

 

He does mention because it's lcd the blacks are not as dark so be aware that night scenes will show as a bit of gray.

Ya, buying/testing the latest and greatest hardware is a hobby of mine. I keep the best item and sell the rest.

Reverb looks great by most accounts. I've ordered one.

Still nowhere to be seen in Canada. HP site says sold out and Amazon actually removed their listing entirely last night. Guess I’m staying with my Rift S...

Been rocking the original Odyssey for far too long ....In hindsight I'm glad I didn't jump on the Odyssey+ ....

He does a good job explaining the way it compares to other headsets in terms of resolution, screen door effect, panels, the controllers, etc. I think he mixes up the length of the cables. Both have 3.5m but the pro has the .6m additional for the backpack edition which he says is .5 longer which isn't the case I suppose.

 

He mainly reviews video games so I wouldn't expect a super detailed review on hardware like this. He does a much better job reviewing games and I can say that he saved me a lot money from buying games that weren't worth it.

Just got an email from HP. My Reverb is being delivered tomorrow by DPD!!!
