Can an Imac work for now if I use bootcamp?

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

Been drooling for some time over this game. I can't get another computer right now so I am wondering if I can play DCS on my IMAC if I boot it into windows?

I'm not a computer wizard, so I am asking if you can tell me if I have the specs to play.

My Imac.

I7 4.gh

32 gb ram 1867 ddr3

AMD radeon R9 M395X 4 Gb

Hopefully you can help me get flying :)

Thanks for your time.

The graphics card is weak, but you should be able to play at least on Low Graphics settings .. I used to run DCS 1.2 a few years ago on a much older iMac, and it did run fairly well:

Give it a try, keep in mind that you will need at least 120 GB of disk space (for windows, DCS and a few modules), Bootcamp will allow you to create a disk partition for this. You also need the CD of Windows .. may I suggest the use of an older 64-bit Windows, like Windows 7 or 8.1

For work: iMac mid-2010 of 27" - Core i7 870 - 6 GB DDR3 1333 MHz - ATI HD5670 - SSD 256 GB - HDD 2 TB - macOS High Sierra

For Gaming: 34" Monitor - Ryzen 3600X - 32 GB DDR4 2400 - nVidia GTX1070ti - SSD 1.25 TB - HDD 10 TB - Win10 Pro - TM HOTAS Cougar - Oculus Rift CV1

Mobile: iPad Pro 12.9" of 256 GB

Thanks for the info. I didn't think about windows 7 or 8.1.

My time frame is a few months to get a new dedicated gaming computer.

I will have to buy a copy of windows 10 then.

Do you think it is still wise to grab a 7... or just buy the 10 because and I will be done with it?

I suggested an older Windows because Windows 10 has very annoying stutters while it download patches when it feels like it and without asking permission, and does "maintenance" behind the scenes.

If you can still find Windows 8 new on e-bay, you just need the key, the ISO can be downloaded, like this: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Microsoft-Windows-8-1-Professional-License-Key/302868678928?hash=item4684614910:g:SJAAAOSwaTZbWAQ~

Once you get the new PC, the Windows 8 can be upgraded to Windows 10 if you want (tough I still prefer Windows 8.1), see here:

Best regards

Thanks for your time.

I had that same spec of iMac 2015 (I think) and then upgraded to the 2017 27" model with RX 580 Pro 8Gb, 32Gb RAM and 4.2 GHz i7 CPU.

With the 2015 model I was able to run DCS in bootcamp at lower settings OK or medium at around 30fps @ 2560x1440 on the 5K screen.

With the 2017 model, that jumped to around 50fps on the same settings, as the 580 Pro.

However, I bought a PC with the specs you can see below, and it was chalk and cheese.

Still, the bottom line is, that even with the modest 395X, you can still run DCS in Bootcamp reasonably OK till you get something better.
