I think I'm decided.

Recommended Posts

So I think the upgrade is going to be:

AMD Ryzen 3700x

G Skill DDR4/3600 cas16 memory

Gigabyte 2080ti Waterforce GPU

That'll be a $2100 hit but I should be able to sell my current stuff for about $700 after eBay costs. Hmmm. need to come to terms with this.

Maybe I'll sell my i7-4790/1080ti gaming rig too. It rarely gets used and I have a laptop that will do all the games my wife plays in VR really well.

At least I have a few days to ponder it before everything is back in stock at Newegg.

Yeah I just upgraded from a 2600 -- which wasn't any better than my 1700 -- to a 3600X. Yuge difference. Yuuuuuuge. Dude. Do it. You might even want to take the CPU for a spin before you upgrade your GPU, it's that good

What board are you running with that 3600x?

I just (5 mins ago) cancelled an order for an AMD 3700x and X570 mobo + 32GB of 3200Ghz RAM to replace the system in my sig. I was worried that the new CPU/Mobo combo would not represent much of a performance increase. Maybe I should place the order again . . .

MSI B450M Gaming Plus

Note I wasn't planning on overclocking, I dunno that would have been my first choice if I had been. I don't think it's shipping with the new bios but it has the button on the back that allows you to upgrade the bios without a CPU. And the bios does work. Worth checking MSI website to make sure you get RAM that works at the rated speed. Gets the job done for a hundred bucks

Damn! I thought I was decided and then after all the input; did a tour around the internet for a couple of days. I just ordered the 3600 non-x. I don't need the cooler and will have to overclock it manually on the 370x chipset anyways so no need to get the x. The memory I want is still out of stock so I'll just put the screws to this 3000 set and see what happens. I'll let you all know in a couple of days.

Edit: I just went ahead and ordered 16Gb of the Ballistic Elite 3600c16 memory too. I'll wait on the GPU for the now. The water-cooled 1080ti is going for around $600 on eBay and that shouldn't change for at least a little while.

From everything I’m reading, and watching memory usage videos, 32Gb serves no purpose for gaming. I have tomorrow off and will do some testing in DCS; then order another 16 if it is warranted.

There is no point in paying extra 70€ for 0-1 fps gain.

The 3600 is $200, the 3800x is $400. Not sure how that translates but that's almost a whole day's pay.

True that. I seriously considered the 3600 but decided to future proof with 8 cores since even the next console generation will have 8 core Ryzen. That will hopefully create a situation where every game will scale seamlessly to higher core counts and maybe one day will be reality even in DCS (Dual Core Simulator?). I hope my logic is worth it.

I'll buy the 3700X in morning. You have 9 hours to convince me otherwise. ;)

If you buy the 3700x now then will will deny yourself an interim upgrade when the 3800x goes on sale in December. Buy the 3600 now for $200 then sell it for for a hundred bucks and buy the 3800x for $250. You will have paid the same price but gotten twice the fun out of it.

I told my wife I was thinking of selling both 1080 ti GPUs. She said “you mean the one out of my computer”. So I told her she could buy it from me for $550 if she wants to call it hers. Gonna have to see how this plays out.

Yeah I'm yanking the 480 outa my wife's computer today and replacing it with a quadro 600. Difference between you and me is, I'm not telling her

we’ve had 4 core cpu’s for a decade... and nothing has happened yet. but maybe next year they will be supported?

fingers crossed.

I'm interested to learn what you find out. I've been lead to believe 32Gb is almost essential for DCS multiplayer...

Me too. I'm going to pull 2 sticks out of my machine today and run some tests. A DCS benchmark test would be nice.
