Download updates to separate drive?

Recommended Posts

I used to download patches to a folder on a different drive because my DCS drive often doesn't have space to store all the temp files during the download process. With the latest update I got a message saying that this separate download folder was "deprecated" and it switched back to the old method of downloading to the DCS drive. There was no option to keep downloading to a separate drive. How can I revert this?

You can’t .. probably it’s time to move onto a larger drive, its not worth it to fight the inevitable.

Yes you can - you need to use mklink to create a symbolic link from the _downloads folder in your DCS folder to the location where you want the download to occur.

Run command prompt as an administratore and then use the following command

mklink /D <DCS install path>\_download <target path>

In my case <DCS install path> is E:\games\eagle dynamics\dcs world openbeta

and <target path> is f:\dcs download

Make sure that you make the target path a folder that will only contain the DCS download files since it will be cleared after update is complete. Also note that it cannot already exist on mklink will tell you that it cannot create if the target already exists

Already bought a 230GB drive for DCS, of which it's currently taking up 190GB. If I get any more terrains, I'll run out of space. Are we really expected to constantly buy new drives and migrate the install over every year?

If you stay with the DCS Modules you already have, then no, you don't need more drive space. However, you can't expect to keep adding Modules and not use more space, isnt it?

If you have space on other drives, you can use the mklink technique that other people has suggested .. if you don't, then buying a bigger drive is inevitable.

If you do buy a new drive, please don't purchase a 480GB model or you will be here again in a year ... go for a 1 TB unit

Strange move by ED to disable this ability with one of the last OpenBeta patches and not mentioning it in the changelog. Or was it mentioned in the patcher-changelog?

DCS Wishlist: 2K11 Krug SA-4 Ganef SAM, VR-TrackIR icons next to player names in score-chart

PvP: 100+ manual player-kills with Stingers on a well known dynamic campaign server - 100+ VTOL FARP landings & 125+ hours AV-8B, F-14 crew, royal dutch airforce F-16C - PvP campaigns since 2013

DCS server-admins: please adhere to a common sense gaming industry policy as most server admins throughout the industry do. (After all there's enough hostility on the internet already which really doesn't help anyone. Thanks.)

Dell Visor VR headset, Ryzen 5 5600 (6C/12T), RTX 2060 - basic DCS-community rule-of-thumb: Don't believe bad things that a PvP pilot claims about another PvP pilot without having analyzed the existing evidence

They probably removed it because they introduced a bug where some people in certain conditions would have their entire drive wiped because the folder was in a separate path. Why they couldn't just keep the separate path ability and fix the bug they created is beyond me.

It was no bug, just they didn’t Think that someone would use the root folder of the drive as a temporary files location.
