New DCS: F/A-18C Hornet Academic Videos

Over the past several weeks, we have continued our series of academic videos for our Hornet. We hope these will learn this aircraft prior to release later this year.

To find the latest DCS: F/A-18C Hornet news, please regularly check our mini-updates.

We generally enter a new update at least once a week.

If you have any questions about our Hornet, please see our Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) post.

DCS: Yak-52 Update

From the desk of Yo-Yo, one of our flight model engineers.

As the Yak-52 is not really suitable for any combat simulation, and is a very special DCS product, we can show the “behind the curtain” tuning and verification process regarding our flight test results.

The first post will be about its roll rate:

This test is a pure aileron roll starting from a climb to perform four full rolls. The rolls start with a maximal, fast full stick deflection, proceeded with full aileron input, and ends with maximal fast stick release (not perfect in both tests - the real test input was a bit delayed and the test seems to be overcompensated).

The atmosphere conditions in DCS were set identical during the tests. This test allows us to check initial roll acceleration (MOIx vs aileron power), steady roll rate (aileron power vs damping), and roll damping (MOIx vs damping). Additionally, we obtained roll rate vs speed, and these two parameters (the first divided by the second) can provide a ratio that is proportional to the so-called spiral coefficient (TAS must be used and the wingspan to get it). It is not necessary to use this spiral coefficient in this case though.

For those who have never seen experimental recordings from the real world, the sinusoidal high frequency noise over the curve is vibration. It was not filtered to better preserve phase and time of the original recording.

You can clearly see that the model's initial angular acceleration is in good accordance with the test results, see Fig. 4. The deceleration in Fig 2 is in a good accordance to slightly different control input.

As the initial pitch of both tests were not identical, the speed during the tests is different too. So, to compare the roll rate, we need to divide roll rate to IAS (Fig. 2). It is interesting to note that the real aircraft has very tiny spiral coefficent slope to high IAS (see the trendline). We can suggest that that this is due to aileron linkage elasticity or wing elasticity or both. As it is barely noticeable even a the diagram, we do not think it should be reproduced in the model.

Finally, we'd like to state that the results represent the current stage of model tuning, as such, this is still very much work-in-progress.

P.S. The uneven (sinusoidal) low frequency of the roll rate is a result of the fact that the X-axis of the sensor was not exactly aligned with the plane axis, so it must be disregarded as a parasite effect.

DCS World 2.5 Update

Since the release of 2.5 DCS World Open Beta, the team has been hard at work addressing issues identified during the Open Beta process. In this sense, the Open Beta has been a great success and will result in a better finished product. Many issues have already been addressed like night lighting and Spitfire damage model, but we still have a few issues that we need to resolve before we can move DCS World 2.5 out of Open Beta. Some of these issues include a memory leak after starting several missions and more efficient shader compilation for first time mission loads.

Yak-52 Development Note from Yo-yo

First, I would like to emphasize that the Yak 52 module is currently being tuned using actual recorded parameters from an actual Yak-52. This is why we call this a new stage in PFM development. In this post, I will present another stage of the work involved in the development of this FM, airplane side movement.

Springs and Dampers

The discussion of how a plane will behave during free side movement (roll and sideslip together), this has been known to start heated debates on other forums. Some people say that it must be a solid rock in a moving stream, while others talk about oscillations due to the physical basics of this type of movement. In this instance, the second statement would be correct. The plane in yaw movements is similar to a mass suspended from a spring surrounded by oil to damp. The spring is a static aerodynamic moment that tends to reduce yaw angle, the mass is the aircraft moment of inertia and the oil is an additional aerodynamic moment of the airframe due to rotational speed.

The observation that a plane oscillating seems to be unnatural can be explained by the following reasons:
1. The phenomenon of human perception, the pilot's brain will concentrate on the main information being received and will disregard minor details such as small oscillations during, say, the abrupt ending of a roll maneuver, these generally are beyond perception.
2. Due to the improper parameters of these oscillations, the period and damping. These parameters are explained below.
Generally, these parameters are obtained from flight tests, and are then documented under FREE RUDDER.

In the sim we cannot simulate free controls; because of this it is necessary to have the results for FIXED RUDDER. It is known that the period of oscillations does not change significantly, but the damping does. Generally the difference is about 2 times.
Having an opportunity to check in a real Yak-52, we performed the test and recorded several rudder impulses at 200 and 270 km/h IAS (Indicated Airspeed). The pilot tried, during these tests, to keep the rudder pedals in the neutral position after the initial shore deflection (impulse).

Then, the same tests were performed in DCS at the same speed, altitude (affects damping) and atmosphere conditions. The chart below presents the intermediate stage of model verification. The period is correct and damping is to be corrected by 15% for the sake of purists and accountants.

So I have a few comments about the included graph. I kept wX from the test; though this record was made in real world tests it has some flaws. The first is the aforementioned lack of X axis alignment and the second is most likely accidental stick movements during oscillation. The theory tells us that a pure experiment like we have for DCS (no significant control forces, no accelerations, etc) gives pure 90 degrees of phase shift between wX and wY. Anyways, the initial behaviour shows good similarity between DCS and real world wX.

The next important point for the plane handling parameter is a ratio of wX/wY. The chart shows that there is good match between real world tests and the module in DCS. It is not possible to exactly compare due to the reasons explained above.

It's very interesting to compare fixed rudder test results with the available graphs from the book ("Practical Aerodynamics of Yak-52 and Yak-55", Russian documentation). The periods of oscillation are very close, damping is as expected by less than 2 times for the free rudder, and roll/yaw ratio is somewhere close as well.

DCS World 2.5 Open Beta Update 4
Since the third update to the DCS World 2.5 Open Beta, the team has focused their efforts on loading time, memory leaks, and performance issues in the Open Beta. In this 4th update, we believe we have largely addressed these issues. For those taking part in the DCS World 2.5 Open Beta, we look forward to your feedback, and once we feel confident these issues have been resolved, we will move DCS World 2.5 out of Open Beta.

You can find the complete DCS World 2.5 Open Beta Update 4 changelog here.

DCS: F/A-18C Hornet Update

Work continues at a brisk pace on the Hornet. Since the last Hornet update, most of the navigation systems (TACAN, ADF, and Waypoints) are now functional, the flight model / flight control system is further refined, internal and external sounds have been improved, texturing of the cockpit art is now using an improved albedo effect, aerial refueling is working, fuel dump has been added, conditional switch position based on airfield or aircraft carrier start has been implemented, more realistic LEX vapor, and a more dynamic simulation of the individual engines. The team is making great progress.

The big items to still implement though include STT/ACM radar modes for air-to-air radar, AUTO, CCIP, and MAN modes for unguided bombs, and the moving map display option. Once these are completed, we will move the Hornet into full testing.

We are also working on an extensive set of interactive training missions.

DCS: AJS-37 Viggen – 16-2 Red Flag Campaign on Steam

The AJS-37 Viggen: 16-2 Red Flag Campaign is a depiction of flying the AJS-37 Viggen during a typical Red Flag exercise in the skies over Nevada. Take the role of a US Air Force exchange pilot to the Swedish Air Force as you return to take part in a Red Flag in the cockpit of a Viggen. This campaign includes extensive briefing, map, and lineup card PDF files for each mission and was designed by the creators of the Spitfire: Epsom and Mustang: Charnwood campaigns.

All of the missions are based on input from pilots that have flown in Red Flag exercises and will provide you a challenge that will test even the most skilled virtual pilots.

  • 10 handcrafted mission that depict number of types of strike missions a Viggen pilot would fly in combat
  • Highly detailed mission briefings, mission maps, and lineup cards as PDF files
  • Custom voice overs and hundreds of triggers

DCS World 2.5 Open Beta Update
Thank you for all the feedback and reports on the DCS World 2.5 Open Beta. We are reading all of your reports and using them to make DCS World 2.5 even better. Much of our focus is centered on improving night lighting, better memory management / loading times, and updating the remaining cockpits to use deferred lighting. We are also implementing a new "Offline" mode to allow you to play DCS World 2.5 without any requirement for an internet connection.

Thank you for your patience.

DCS: Persian Gulf Map Update
As mentioned in a previous newsletter, the Persian Gulf Map entered external testing recently and the development team has been very busy fixing bugs, improving mesh and texture quality, and optimizing the map. Like the DCS: NEVADA Test and Training Range Map, the Persian Gulf Map will also use clip maps and merge satellite imagery with hand-created textures. This allows us as high degree of detail and a great ground-level rendering, while not having a massive file size footprint. Since the Nevada Map though, the technology has been further refined and improved for terrain details at mid- to long-ranges.

Once this map has been thoroughly tested and at a quality level we are happy with, we will soon thereafter make it available for purchase and download.

Here are a few recent images from the new map.

DCS: F/A-18C Hornet Update
Over the past week, much work has been focused on navigation and radar on the engineering side of the house, while the art team is starting to crank out many new skins for the Early Access release of the Hornet.

Air-to-Air Radar
As noted in the last several updates, one of the primary tasks is coding the air-to-air modes of the AN/APG-73 radar for the Hornet. The current focus is on Single Track Target (STT) mode as this will be vital for radar directed gun, radar-slaved AIM-9, and PD illumination for AIM-7. This work is currently revolving around target angles/range filtering and symbology display behavior.

Work is still in progress on search/acquisition radar modes in regard to scan limits applied by antenna servo electronics, in addition to physical antenna gimbal limits. This all involve coordinate transformation (antenna/scan frames, SPRS (Space Pitch/Roll Stabilized), body frame while accounting for antenna electronic roll stabilization.

In parallel, the needed data for future MSI (Multi-Sensor Integration) routines and modes like LTWS (latent TWS) is being coded and would be sent to the MC2 (Mission Computer 2).

A lot of work is being done on code-structure refinement. Given all the functionality is being worked on, we have to avoid the code from becoming spaghetti-like.

The implemented and in-progress data structures and algorithms (like target search, target data filtering, antenna electronic roll stabilization, etc.) will help us in later projects, and we hope this will reduce those development times.

Attached is a very simple debug screenshot.

Hornet Skins
For the Early Access release of the Hornet, we plan to have more skins available than any previous module at the time of initial release. Our first priority is on actual operators of the F/A-18C, and then we will focus on operators of F/A-18A operators and those that were updated. Our current plan is as follows:

Pre-Purchase Persian Gulf Map for DCS World!
Pre-Purchase the Persian Gulf Map now for $39.99 and save 20%! The price will increase to $49.99 at the end of May 2018.

The Persian Gulf Map for DCS World focuses on the Strait of Hormuz, which is the strategic choke point between the oil-rich Persian Gulf and the rest of the world. Flanked by Iran to the North and western-supported UAE and Oman to the south, this has been one of the world’s most dangerous flash points for decades. It was the location of Operation Praying Mantis in 1988 in which the US Navy sank several Iranian naval vessels.

The region also includes the vast Arabian Sea that is well-suited for combat aircraft carrier operations, and it will be an amazing area of operations for the upcoming Hornet and Tomcat. Be it from land bases in Iran, UAE and Oman, or from the deck of an aircraft carrier, the Persian Gulf Map offers a wide array of combat mission scenarios to prove your mettle.

Key Features:
  • 200,000 sq km highly detailed map area that centers on the Strait of Hormuz.
  • As part of DCS World 2.5, this map include highly detailed terrain, textures, seas, and buildings.
  • 13 accurately created airbases in Iran, the UAE and Oman. Airbases include a variety of landing aids that can include TACAN, VASI lights, realistic approach lights, and VOR.
  • Detailed cities such as Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Bandar Abbas with unique buildings.
  • “Strong Hold” islands such as Abu Musa, Siri, and the Tunb islands.
  • Iran, the UAE and Oman will be added to the list of DCS World nations.
  • Unique trees, bushes, grass and other vegetation using speedtree technology.
  • Varied terrain from towering mountains and valleys to desert plains.
  • New Iranian liveries

DCS World 2.5.1 Update
Version 2.5.1 for DCS World is currently in external testing and includes the new Offline Mode and improved memory management as its primary features. Now that it has been built, our valued 3rd parties are updating their aircraft to operating in version 2.5.1. Once this is complete, we will first move this version to the DCS World 2.5.1 Open Beta branch.
Until we can release 2.5.1 with improved memory management, we suggest looking at your System Options in DCS World. One setting that has been found to help out considerably is the Preload Radius setting, cutting that value in half can make a huge difference in load times for multiplayer servers, we suggest tweaking this setting and find what works best for you.

DCS: F/A-18C Hornet Update
Since the last Hornet update, the flight model continues to be refined; Air Combat Maneuvering (ACM) radar modes now auto-lock targets; the ground suspension model has been refined for landing and taxi behavior; a pilot model has been added to the cockpit view; new skins like the Blue Angels, VMFA-122 and low-vis skins for VMFA-232 and 323 have been added; external sounds are even more realistic; LEX vapors are more realistic looking; and Inertial Navigation Systems (INS) ground alignment has been added.

Here you can find three Hornet live streams we did of the Hornet over the upcoming Persian Gulf map:

Part 1: Hornet over UAE and Oman

Part 2: Hornet over Iran

Part 3: Hornet over the Persian Gulf islands

We have also released our 7th Hornet academic video, this one on Hornet waypoint navigation

While this will eventually apply to all aircraft, the Hornet will be one of the first DCS World aircraft to incorporate our new rain drops on canopy effect. While still very much WIP, this little snippet shows of the general tech and animation we are using.

SA-2 Guideline (S-75 Dvina) Coming to DCS World
Although DCS World includes a large selection of Surface-to-Air Missile (SAM) systems, the iconic SA-2 Guideline (S-75 Dvina) has been absent. We are now in the final stages of bringing this historic SAM to DCS World as part of a free update.

More screenshots

Developed and first deployed by the Soviet Union in 1957, the SA-2 was designed as a medium- to high-altitude anti-aircraft systems using command guidance. Serving nations throughout the world, the SA-2 became the mode widely deployed SAM in history, with variants produced in China and Iran. It was an SA-2 that led to the shoot down in Francis Gary Powers in a U-2 spy plane over the Soviet Union in 1960.

A typical SA-2 SAM battery consists of a “Fan Song” missile guidance radar, six two-stage S-75 missiles with launchers, and reload vehicles. A typical SA-2 battery is laid out with the launchers forming a characteristic “flower” pattern. Multiple batters comprise an SA-2 battalion, with a supporting “Spoon Rest” early warning radar and command and control vans. Three SA-2 SAM battalions are then organized into a larger SA-2 SAM regiment.

The SA-2 is still in service to this day and will provide a valuable element to creating even more realistic DCS World battlefields.

DCS World War II Assets Update
There are three primary components that currently make up the DCS World War II, the Normandy 1944 map, the warbirds, and the World War II Assets Pack. We’d like to update you on each of these:

DCS: Normandy 1944 Map

Since the map’s release, there have been several improvements like new period objects (windmills, water towers, farm houses, etc.), better beach lines, corrected mesh errors, cleaned up textures, and more detail in the England portion of the map. Currently, Urga Media (the developer) is occupied with their Syria map. However, once the Syria map is complete, we will discuss with them further improvements to the Normandy map like use of speedtrees.

In addition to completing the final touches to the Spitfire (fuel tanks and bombs), our other primary focus has been the P-47D. More so than any other warbird though, this has been the biggest challenge due to the lack of data. Following the war, all wind tunnel and needed flight dynamics data was destroyed. To overcome this, we are using Flow Vision to recreate the needed data. This has proven a long and expensive endeavor. However, to create the detailed flight dynamics that DCS requires, we consider it mandatory.

More screenshots

In consideration of what to work on after the Thunderbolt and Me-262, we asked people to express what they would like to see next, thanks for all the votes, we have submitted the results to the team and will look at what can be done in the future! You can view the results here.

World War II Assets Pack
Many new aircraft and ground units are in development for the DCS World War II Assets Pack and we’ve included images of a few of them in this week’s newsletter. We plan to release the first big update to the pack in June 2018. At that time, the cost of the pack will increase by $5 given the additional content.

DCS World 2.5.1 Open Beta Release
This week brings you the release of 2.5.1 Open Beta, and includes many fixes. Some of the key features are memory management and the New Offline mode.
  • The first version of the video memory manager is implemented. This function will purge the video memory when the budget allocated by Windows is reached. Resources that were not used in the last 10 seconds are the first to be purged.
  • The new OFFLINE mode is now implemented. Users can turn on the OFFLINE mode which permits the game to be used without internet identification and without a time limit. Note: users must turn off the OFFLINE mode on the same PC. OFFLINE mode cannot be turned off from another PC even with the same user login.
In addition to many important bug fixes, 2.5.1. also offers updated night lighting.

As always, we look forward to your feedback and suggestions.

You can find the full changelog in the special topic

Chinese Asset Pack for DCS World
China Asset Pack (CAP) is a free add-on for DCS World developed by Deka Ironwork Simulations. It contains several AI aircrafts, ground and navy units, as well as weapons that have served or are currently serving in China. Deka Ironwork will keep on expanding the asset pack and add more AI units in the future.

One of the most exciting features is the Shenyang J-11A (歼-11A) known to NATO as the Flanker B+ whose airframe is based on the Sukhoi Su-27. With 2.5.1, access to this flyable aircraft is available to those who own Flaming Cliffs 3 for DCS World and later on to those that own the Su-27 Standalone.

Key features that make the J-11A unique are:
  • 3D Model changes (New LODs, Pilot and other features)
  • Lighting (Nose gear, Landing Lights and more)
  • Windshield
  • Air-to-Air Weapons and Pods (RKL-609 ECM Pod & the R-77 Medium range missile)
  • Dual Rack for Rockets & Bombs
You can read more on these changes in our Forums.

F-15C Aggressors BFM Campaign
The F-15C Aggressors BFM campaign puts you in the cockpit of an F-15C Eagle, as a new Aggressor pilot with the 65th Aggressor Squadron at Nellis Air Force Base.

Based on real world procedures you will fly as Red Air against Blue Air Forces. Upon arrival you will fly a familiarization flight around the Nevada Test and Training Range (NTTR). Then you will face a series of challenging Basic Fighter Maneuver (BFM) missions against similar and dissimilar aircraft.

Your opponents include the F-4E, F-14A, F-15C, F-15E, F-16C, F/A-18C, M-2000C, MiG-29G, CF-188 and MiG-21.
Additionally there are 10 single player practice missions with in-air starts so you can perfect your BFM tactics, techniques and procedures.

There are over 1000 voiceovers and over 45 pages of briefing material including the F-15C Amplified Checklist, RED FLAG Spins, Red Forces In Flight Guide, Maps, Diagrams, Custom Kneeboards and Mission Data cards.

DCS: F/A-18C Hornet Update
Matt and Nick are currently in Minsk and Moscow where work on the Hornet and ancillary units is progressing well.

Work has started on the management of aircraft on the CVN-74 carrier deck. Departing aircraft will appear in certain parking and elevators positions and will taxi on to the catapults. Recovering aircraft will taxi to free parking spaces. Subsequent aircraft will go to the elevator and de-spawn. On the deck it will be possible to place static objects (aircraft, equipment, loads). For this purpose we'll provide some new possibilities in the mission editor. A little later, we will show you pictures and videos of this in action.

Nick Grey answers your questions

Many of you submitted questions to Nick, and he was happy to answer them for us, from his favorite aircraft, to his thoughts on what is and what he would like to see in DCS World. You can see the answers and discuss them in the dedicated DCS forum topic.

DCS World 2.5.1 Update
We are currently preparing and testing an update to the 2.5.1 Open Beta. This update should address a number of issues like the metashader error, VR audio device selection, A-10C and Ka-50 datalink errors, FLIR image quality, and others.

We would also like to thank those that took part in the DCS World 2.5 Open Beta. We can’t overstate our appreciation enough to those that have helped DCS World become even better. This amazing community is a large part of what makes DCS World such a unique and great product. Thank you!

As always, a full changelog will be available when the update is published.

ADM-141B TALD Coming to DCS World
One of the new munitions that will be coming with our DCS: F/A-18C Hornet is the ADM-141 Tactical Air Launched Decoy (TALD). The TALD mimics the radar cross section of a fighter-sized aircraft by use of Lungberg lenses, and it is capable of releasing chaff bundles. With a maximum glide range of 120 km, the TALD can be used to “bait” hostile radars to reveal their locations for follow-on Suppression of Enemy Air Defenses (SEAD) attack. The F/A-18C can carry up to six TALDs.

Check out these TALD screenshots, and read more about this system on the www.designation-systems.net

Updated AI Su-34 3D Model Coming to DCS World
As DCS World continues to evolve and expand, we are also updating our older vehicle models. Our latest effort is the Su-34 “Fullback”. First entering service in 2006 with the Russian Air Force, the Su-34 is a supersonic, twin-engine, tactical bomber that features side-by-side seating of the pilot and weapon/navigation officer. The “Fullback” is a true multi-role aircraft that is capable of engaging air, land and sea targets.

This will be a free update to DCS World that we believe will add an engaging and interesting facet to missions.

Persian Gulf Map for DCS World – Night Lighting
As we draw closer to the early access release of the Persian Gulf Map for DCS World, a key focus has been on improving the night lighting. Elements that we have improved or added include:
  • Dramatically increased the visibility range of lights
  • Added moon-projected shadows
  • Improved lighting of urban districts such that they appear more natural
  • Variable light colors (warm and cold)
  • Added better scaling of lights depending on view distance
  • Improved lighting of tall buildings
  • Variable illumination based on moon cycle
  • Completed airfield lighting, including approach and VASI lights

More DCS Persian Gulf screenshots

Combined, we think you’ll be pretty impressed with the progress. Once this effort is complete, we will move these changes to our other maps.

Pre-purchase the Persian Gulf Map for DCS World now and save $10!
