[Bf-109] The Pumas - Historical bomber intercept over Hungary

Recommended Posts

This is an epic single mission complete with voice overs, skins, briefing and kneeboard images. A lot of work went into this one. Lead a formation of eight Bf-109s of the Royal Hungarian Air Force to intercept an overwhelming number of American bombers.

It's July 27th 1944 9AM. The American bombers have become daily visitors over Hungary. At the airfield of Veszprém-Jutas the Pumas are sitting in the cockpits of their Me-109Gs in full readiness, waiting to scramble as soon as the alert comes. They are listening to the loudspeakers playing their favorite song that resonates with their lives so well: "The world is just a day".

When I was a kid in the early '90s, my grandpa gave me a book called "The Pumas" with an Me-109 on the cover, a red screaming puma head painted on its nose. Only a decade earlier, people could have been imprisonned for possessing such writings. It was the memoir of a Hungarian fighter pilot, who flew and fought with the 101st Fighter Group of the Royal Hungarian Air Force, called "The Pumas". These brave young men took off day after day to face American (and Soviet) raids, often outnumbered 10 to 1. Yet, they never complained, and carried out their duty without hesitation, even if most missions were next to suicidal, and the war had obviously been lost already. I was fascinated by this book, and deeply saddened by the fact that their story has almost been erased from the books of history. The new regime after World War II persecuted these pilots, imprisonned or executed them. Only a handful lived to see their homeland free again, and started to tell their stories. With this mission, my only hope is to make their memory live on in a few more people.

UPDATE! - 15/4/2020

I made this mission a long time ago and I learned a thing or two about mission making since, so I thought it was time for a facelift.

- updated skins

- more voice overs added

- revised, smoother triggers

- new kneeboard and briefing images added

- added a third flight to your formation

- bomber formation size selection option added

This last one is the best part. Before you taxi, you will be required to set the size of the bomber formation that you'll encounter:

- Small - 24 bombers, for those who use VR on a weak PC with their settings maxed out. Should run smoothly even on a Nokia 3310.

- Medium - 72 bombers, this is the option I tested it with, ran quite OK on my laptop (!). Should be fine as long as you have sensible gfx settings and run it on something better than a Commodore 64.

- Huge - 192 bombers. It was a slideshow on my laptop, and I'm curious if any of you guys with those nuclear powerplants can play it. Such a formation looks absolutely magnificent, even if it's still far from the 7-800 bombers that flew on that day.

Good hunting!

Thanks for the mission. Looks interesting.

Which map is used and what numbers of aircraft are in use in the bomber formation?

I picked a plausible area on the Caucasus map. WWII assets are needed though. You will lead 8 109s to intercept 72 bombers escorted by 9 Mustangs. The voice overs are in Hungarian, but there are English subtitles.

Tried the mission out last night.

Getting the bad news out of the way, was achieving circa 22fps in VR with toned down settings, but that's partly due to my ancient base unit.

On the positive side, looked utterly ....ing awesome. Really enjoyed trying it out. So my deepest thanks for that.

One of the best (if not the best) content about the 109 that I found here!

This one go in par with Your beautiful skins so keep gooing Reflected, give us other missions like this one...or better give us PVE/PVP mixed missions like some that already exist but with Your touch on it :)

One for all the radio messages relly add immersion to the mission, instead of the English one that are ot of place aboard a German fighter.

Update i tried on VR with release version...the huge formation settings.

All went well until going towards the 090.

Then my fps dropped to 20 and later when I encountered the bombers it was a slideshow.

I will try the same settings in 2d and then in the openbeta
