TACAN to find wingman?

Anyone familiar with using TACAN to find your wingman distance (and/or bearing) in the Hornet? You can use TACAN like this in the Mirage, but when following the same steps in the Hornet all I could get was a spinning TACAN icon around my aircraft in the HSI. Anyone have success?

TACAN to wingman instructions for Mirage (followed this, but in context of the Hornet):

Set TACAN rotary to A/A and X or Y.

Use a separation between leader and wingman of 63 channels.

For example you on Channel 3 and your wingman on Channel 66.

Move the HSI rotary to TACAN.

You will see on the HSI distance display your distance with your wingman.

A Real F18 pilot had this feature running on a recent fun video he made with Bananimal, that's posted here somewhere. CW Lemoine is the pilot I believe.

You need to be in A/A mode. Wingman has to be +63 from what you have. For example lead is 1x wingman will be 64x.

An easy one to remember is lead 29x and wingman 92x (29.92 standard altimeter setting) it will only give you range no bearing

The OP didn’t mention whether his wingman was AI or not, but I don’t believe this works for AI wingmen. I’ve tried to have an F-18 set A/A TACAN to 29X and I set mine to 92X and nothing. I believe only AI tankers support A/A TACAN.

No, it does not work with the F/A-18.

But if it really work for someone, may I ask to provide the detailed procedure in the editor and o board the aircraft ?

Thanks

Spam the ON/OFF button on the UFC, it seems that it works but very intermittent at best.

We got it to work yesterday in MP. Make sure TACAN is on in the UFC. Had a buddy use 6X, I used 69X (they have to be 63 apart). Mare sure A/A is also on and TCN is boxed in the center DDI. Not sure if you have to box it but we did anyway. It will give a range in the HUD about 1 inch below where Altitude is displayed. There will not be any bearing as to where they are at as previously stated. Just a distance. So theoritacally say it says 1.0, they could be at any point on a sphere with a radius of 1 mile from your aircraft. You can use this for when you go line abreast to know how far apart you are.

We have tried every way to get this to work with no joy. As you were able to do so, we will try again today.

In that case would give us all a detailed checklist for the procedure ?
