Finding Ground Targets

Hi Guys, I have been flying a few CAS missions with the F18 and I am wondering what’s the best method of finding targets and how do you identify what’s an enemy target and whats a friendly. I find myself getting to the CAS waypoint and I spend most of my time looking for targets. Thanks

Labels.

If not, study the mission planner... if mission planner doesn't let you see enemy units, study it from mission editor. Real mission should give you intel on whereabouts of enemy units so I wouldn't consider this cheating. View it from satellite view and remember the cities and roads. Also get close in the enemy units in mission planner and see if they're behind trees or building from where you'll be approaching. If so, change the waypoints to alter your approach.

Some will say it is realistic to miss a few ground units. You can't kill them all. I totally agree with that. Except in DCS, if you miss single one of your objective, for example a BMP, it will destroy your friendly armor (apparently friendly units don't know how to fight) and you have to report for court martial. I've been in hundreds of court martial already.

Thanks for your reply Taz. I don’t really want to use labels, so it looks like I’ll just have to study the mission planner a little bit more

When I started I really had to use the labels but I used the dot labels. It got my eyes trained. I just shut them off 2 weeks ago. But yeah use the dots until you can spot them better.

Hi guys I tried with dots and found it a lot easier to find targets. Is there an option to customise labels ? Basically I just want enemy ground units labelled with a dot. I am happy the way my air to air combat is going. Thanks

Labels are cheating... :music_whistling:

More authentic ways to find your ground targets:

- Mission briefing and maps

- JTAC and having them provide coordinates

- Your MK-1 eyeball

- The targeting pod

- And realize that camouflaged ground targets would in fact be hard to see from a fast mover like the Hornet.

Thanks Taz, I have downloaded the file and placed it in DCS/config/view where do I change the distance as I can’t find it in options. Thanks
